Good question. Let me see, PS version is out of the question, so it really comes down to SNES Vs Advance.
SNES -Woosley translation -Better music GBA -More accurate translation -Sharper graphics (barely) -Portable -Some glitches were fixed -Extra dungeons, magicite and weapons -Added face portraits to the speech bubbles -They removed THE CAPS in the names (little detail but it bothered me like hell) Close call, but I’m going with the SNES version. Considering the restrains, Mr. Woosley did an incredible job with the translation, and the music is a pretty big deal to me. Admittedly I replay the game in the Advance version for the extra stuff. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

Yeah, I had to go with the FF3 version too. Too much nostalgia lies within my heart for this venerable old grande dame. It's near impossible to pick anything else, even the rather good GBA version.

And in an interview with him online, he says that he was trying to capture the spirit of the dialogue. Doing a literal translation doesn't always work out, especially considering how different Japan and America is culturally.
Also note how horrible the translation of FFVII was, after Woolsey left ("this guy are sick"). Maybe silly stuff like that wouldn't have happened... |

It may be useful to see "Woolseyism" as a process of actual localization rather than translation. Well, at least I wasn't the only vote for anthology.
For the record, I do carry a bias: I've never played the original SNES version. I like the original translation, which I thought was pretty good (especially after playing Xenogears and FFVII). Actually, I didn't like many of the changes in FFVI advance's script: Atma Weapon. That's how it goes. No excuses. I also really liked the opening and ending scenes. Obviously not a make-or-break factor, but it was a cool addition. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! I played the SNES version first. To be honest? It was my favorite because I could Joker/Doom or Vanish./Doom all those tough bosses and get him in like two turns.

Quote Actually, I didn't like many of the changes in FFVI advance's script: Atma Weapon. I agree. Calling it "Ultima Weapon" makes it sound cheesy, like everything else called "Ultima". Calling it "Atma" gave it a unique name that sounded vaguely like both "Atomic" and "Ultima". -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Well, as stated, the Anthologies version is the worst of all three, avoid it if possible.
That being said, I would say play the original first then the GBA remake. The original has some better item name translations, ironically, and it was the original. The GBA has a better translation overall, but some of the item names are wonked (Celestriads instead of Three Stars), and there is extra superhard content. Plus, bugs were fixed such as evade, which nerfed some characters like Terra but made others much better like Shadow. EDIT: IMO, Woolsey did a decent job on his games given the time he was given to work with. However, in today's standards his localizations/translations aren't very good, and in general it is now looked upon that translation > localization for the most part. I chose the SNES version. and to add to it, this time, I found the music was much better, the choppy translations much more entertaining, and all the parts were in it.
Even though I liked the SNES more than the advanced version, I've always dreamed of a portable FF6 on a game boy. So its even, but I chose the SNES because its the original andthe music is a big problem in Advanced. I shouldnt even note anything about anthologies, yea there were extrs and stuff like that, but the loading time was bad., and unbarable. Period. -------------------- You Can't Escape... This is a difficult choice. I went with the original. That's the one that started it all, from it's quirky translation to the beautiful sound and graphics. But I have all three, and they all have aspects that make them worth having.
SNES has... well... what we all grew up with, the original Am. version of the game. Anthologies has the FMVs and concept art. and the Adv has all those new features, like new dungeons, translation, etc. While I don't like the new translation as much, I do think it adds some new aspects to the story. But the actual game remains throughout each version. -------------------- |

First Post! And I'm proud to say I voted for the original SNES cartridge! I'm 24-years-old and this is the one that I played when I was 9.
I've played the PS version, and while I did enjoy the bestiaries and such, but the load times and name changes - unacceptable. Those old glitches from the old game made it fun to toy around and tweek the adventure a bit every once in a while as well. |

I haven't played the Advanced version, so that's out. I'd like to, but I can't stand playing on those tiny portable screens.
![]() The Playstation version sucked except for the handy Sprint key, which eliminated the need for Sprint Shoes, thus freeing up a Relic slot in my party. Not major, and kinda cheap, but still rather nice. So I guess the SNES version wins in my book. ![]() -------------------- "Sometimes I amaze even myself." -Han Solo, "Star Wars: A New Hope" |

I was thinking about NC. but anyways, back on topic. Yeah it's kind of hard to play a game like this on a small screen, bc it deserves to be on a big screen to get all of the magic. The Adv. has a sprint button too. It actually makes Sprint Shoes rather useless actually. But I agree, the SNES is the best hands down. -------------------- |
