Well Faris is my favorite character in FFV

and I have always been under the impression that her sprites transitioned from masculine to androgynous to feminine clothing. But as of recent my previous idea was proven wrong. Faris has not only more feminine sprites than I imagined, but even more scintillating. Even excluded Dancer sprites, compared to Lenna's Faris has some provocative sprites.



Magic knight especially I've always seen this as one of her more masculine sprites, until I realized something and had to zoom in to make sure.

much to my surprise Faris' sprite is way more provocative than Lenna's.

Probably something we would see worn by Xena.

I just had a look at all of her sprites - most of them look masculine, which actually surprised me. Of course Dancer didn't, Oracle, Beastmaster, Chemist, Black Mage definetely didn't, and Summoner. I'm not sure I know what you're hinting about the Mystic Knight, although looking at it I think I see something... but I also doubt what I'm seeing.

And don't you just love the Berserker outfits?

When comparing the original sized image and the zoomed image. The original size looks like she's completely clothed and dressed in men's clothing. But when zoomed it's clear that what I once believed to be pants and sleeves is in fact skin tones.
and the pixels used to make an image for clothing that covers the torso is in the shape of a bra.

Also in her ninja sprite, she's clearly dressed as a more provocative kunoichi. She's flat out wearing a mini skirt or a short kimono.

I've always seen that Mystic Knight Faris sprite as very exposing. I even thought she had increased breast sizes. Still not sure if that's true, but from what I can see it looks like it. And she looked like she had a broken back

If it were possible to get those outfits before Faris was exposed as a girl, just imagine it from the Galuf/Bartz perspective...

"... Umm Faris, Why don't you do anything about those tumors on your chest, and for god sakes... put some clothes on!"

I was actually unaware of how revealing the outfit actually is, and saying that i'm doing a SCC M.Knight game, It seems silly to miss. But, It is very small on a gameboy, I suppose the computer/console would make the point more apparent. Either way, they do a good job of laying it out there, and still having few people notice. But then again, you are making a person out of a 16 X 24 rectangle giving a grand total of 384 pixels, many of which are transparent background.

You could quite literally change the femininity of the picture by filling in the bra exposure (a whole 3 pixel suggestion of clevage), and making pants out of the upper leg shading (only 3 pixels necessary, but could do up to 9).

So I guess the final point is that it only takes 12 pixels to cross-dress Faris. If I was at home (which I'm not... darn school), I'd actually paint it up and see how it stands up.

We were in the same boat, although I have no desire to change her sprite. Unless it's a change of colors to make it more visible what the spriters had intended.

Yea, I hadn't noticed and then I looked closer for something that would surprise me, needless to say it stands out. So it's one of those: "How could I not notice this?" things.

Have you ever looking at Lenna's Berserker outfit. She's hardly wearing anything, but on the sprite it's hard to tell.

haha, well what do ya now. Faris is barely wearing anything!

Knight: Nearly exactly the same cancels out
Monk: Lenna looks like the outfit worn by an Asian masseuse, while Faris wears a Karate Gi.
Thief: Lenna is wearing a skirt, Faris has a tunic and tights (Link anyone?)
Dragoon: Both show some leg, but Lenna has a low cut top.
Ninja: Almost exactly the same except for color cancels out.
Berserker: Lenna Bikini clad, Faris wearing a one piece.
Ranger: Lenna has the Artemis look going, while Faris is wearing nothing but a tunic and boots, sadly within 16-bit limitations Lenna is a clear cut winner.
Magic Knight: Already stated Lenna, dressed like a belly dancer, Faris, wearing nothing but bikini armor, probably midsection showing. Faris gets a point.
Samurai: pretty much the same except for coloring and Lenna has a heart shaped item on her headband, cute but not a difference maker. Cancels out
White Mage: Lenna’s comes to a skirt, Faris is completely covered.
Black Mage: Exactly the same
Time Mage: Exactly the same except Faris is wearing tights
Summoner: same as white mage.
Blue Mage: Came out during the time of the game Faris was still hiding something. Lenna gets the point
Red Mage: very similar, except Lenna is wearing a red scarf, and a bonnet which is what old ladies wear on Sundays, Faris gets a point
Trainer: Lenna has a top and tights which resemble a skier, Faris is wearing a miniskirt.
Chemist: Lenna wearing full-blown dress, Faris Miniskirt:
Bard: Lenna is dressed feminine Faris isn’t.
Dancer: Faris is dressed like a salsa dancer from Spain, Lenna, definitely a piece of dancewear, similar to the dress from “Dirty Dancing”
Geomancer: Why Hello Bananrama, Both are wearing overalls and look like they’re ready to paint a house. Winner Galuf.
Mime: Galuf is just stylin’ I believe this sprite was made by our very own Djibriel, All Galuf is missing is his pimp cane.

Now did this while I was bored last night. an Came to the conclusion that Faris' character dresses for comfort above all else. And Lenna, well being a princess, she's probably somewhat concerned with fashion.

What a difference a few pixels on a sprite can make. Things can go from tame to provocative pretty quick. Nice observation, man. Though Faris generally has arms that are more buff than Lena.

Meh. Faris looks kinda manly in the majoity (specially Summoner and Berseker). Both Berserkers one's look cool - I like the whole animal thing... But yeah... Faris' Mystic Knight is nothing like Lenna's Berserker. Which is concerning... considering how you can actually tell stuff like this out on sprites (even though the V sprites are cool).

I agree, Faris is more to-the-point, whilst Lenna is definetely more worried about her looks.

Well that stands to reason. Faris was attempting to disguise herself as a man during the game. Even though it goes unstated when she starts making a transition.

Also the spriters made Faris' fist bigger than Lenna's or Krile's, Faris is a pirate after all.

Notes: Ninja Faris has some major guns! Cannoneer Faris reminds me if she wandered away from her marching band. You will obey Evil Princess Sara err.. Faris (Gladiator).

To be honest her Gladiator sprite is by far her most promiscuous outfit. so promiscuous she had to hide her face.

The sprites reveal that faris doesn't care about showing some leg. an interesting transformation when you think about it.

I've ruled it under 16-bit limitations, all the characters have similar poses before they attack.

and kame did make a nice addition to my study on faris, adds more evidence to her character/personality transformation.

i'm currently trying to write scenes that won't be devoid of the character faris, but add to the story. Something FFV fans will hopefully enjoy.

I'm finally back, everyone! It's been months, maybe even a year since I last visited this website!

I know it is a very old topic but...could there be the reason that Faris showed more of herself later on because she spent some time with Lenna and got more self-confident through that? I mean, it is more likely that you reveal more skin to people you know than you don't. Maybe there was also some interactions between Lenna and Faris, meaning the girly talk about clothes and so on...xD
