I'm very much stuck. Here's the issue.
It's a gear boss battle. I'm about to fight Shakkan in the gate generator, just after Shakkan has been given "the power" by that big jerk Grahf. It's the battle where he uses the generator to heal himself 1000HP whenever he sees fit and, after being delt 10,000 damage, he heals himself after every attack. Anyways, the most I've ever done to him is 14,000. The first 10,000 isn't a problem, but once I get too far past that my Gears run out of fuel and I can't heal any more. But this is where the problem begins. Normally, I'd just go buy more stuff or go fight to get some levels up. But I'm trapped on the darn island, and I already have the best gear parts I can buy fromt he guy in Nisan. My gears are all equipped with water veils (strong against fire) and two gears also are equipped with seal armor (strong against seal attacks, which Shakkan likes to use). There are absolutely no enemies to train against on the island that are even worth fighting (does that even effect my gear stats?). I don't think I can do anything with the flying disk either... Help! I've been working at this for weeks... I've never been beaten so many times by an RPG! -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Wait untill he detaches himself from the gate. He only heals when he's attached. While he's attached.
It's been a LONG time since I played this game, just read up on him here, #52 -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Elly can be a goddess in this battle, or her Aerods ability in particular. If you can equip her with some Power Magics (or an Ether Doubler if you somehow bought one), she can take off thousands of damage each turn. Some people say 9999 but it was more in the 4000-6000 for me. This isn't always an option but you should look around and see if some of that stuff's laying around. If you haven't been using her, at least try just spamming Aerods every turn.
Seal Ars can reduce damage from his Seal Punch attack -- the neo etones fought before may have dropped some -- while Citan can use Renki + Suiseii to bring down Ignas Storm's fire damage. If you're using Andvari, he should just use his LV1 deathblow every other turn. And yeah, as said, don't attack him while he's attached to the gate or he'll heal himself 1000 HP/per attack (and sometimes even without being attacked). Use that time to recharge fuel and health, etc. [EDIT] - BTW, your characters' stats do translate to their gears but IIRC the enemies are all so piss-poor that nothing's likely to come from heavy training. Ok well my characters are currently Fei, Billy and Bart. Can I change them, and if so how?
I realize that he only heals as a counterattack when he's attached and his damage is in excess of 10,000. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Have a listen! |

Ok, I hope I can be forgiven for the double post here, but I just wanted to say that I did finally succeed!!! I almost didn't even believe it! Over the last few months I would just randomly give the battle another shot, get defeated (fairly narrowly, as always) and then turn it off. Well, I perfected my strategy to a science over this period of time, until the other day when I gave it another go.
So I'm finally free of that cursed spot! Case closed! -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Have a listen! |

Congrats on that! What strategy did you use at the end?
I went with the one previously mentioned , wait till he isn't attached to the reactor to attack with everything, charge while waiting. I think I had the same party as you, or did I have Citan instead of Billy? Can't remember well. That was one of the tougher battles, along with that one you can win or lose to continue with the story, and the other one that yearns you a trading card if you finish fast enough. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

What I ended up doing was charging when he was attatched to the gate generator (to avoid him charging extra) and then switching boost on when he was unattatched so that I could do as much damage as possible before he began to heal again.
It's definitely the best possible strategy, I just needed a dash of luck in addition to it. I finally got that. Had I missed that last hit, he would have begun to heal again and I would have been out of fuel and lost. Close one! -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Have a listen! |

Ok, please forgive the double post again.
I FINALLY BEAT XENOGEARS!! I stopped playing it again for a while, but I've had very little to do the past week. So I picked it up and started playing again... just as the story really started picking up. If the beginning was slow and lost interest, the ending was anything but. I'm really stoked about it actually ![]() YES!! It is amazing how the game starts like your typical cliché rpg. The happy town of the hero gets destroyed and he has to part on an epic quest to find himself and ultimately destroy the greater evil.
Well, the ending is like that but with a bunch of twist, turns, deeper meanings and random Judeo-Christian references, so the result is quite different than the expected. Specially the Possible spoilers: highlight to view I kid.naked time! Pity we are never going to get the other episodes. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

Glad y'liked it, bro. Your sentiments about the last disc being boring are kinda against the grain, 'least as I've seen -- many people decry the heavy narrative approach and wish it were more action-packed like the first disc. But hey, it all comes together into an enjoyable whole.

Yeah, I actually much prefered the second disc... My problem with the first was that there was so much time stretching in between events that your sense of direction gets a bit diluted. In the last disc stuff begins to really come together.

It depends on the weight you give to gameplay and story. If you're more interested about actually playing the game, you're going to be disappointed by Xenogear's second disc. On the other hand, if you consider the story the most important element on an RPG, then you'll prefer the second disc to the first.
Personally, I knew beforehand what was going to happen with the pacing in the later half. So I went ahead and had fun with my random battles and dungeons in the first part and sat back and enjoyed the story in the second one. I actually would have liked it to have better balance between story and gameplay, among other stuff, but no game is perfect. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |
