I played through Chrono Trigger about five times.

I played three minutes of Chrono Cross and walked away bored.

However, I couldn't tell why.

Trigger is a great, I mean GREAT game.

Cross doesn't seem to have any difference, aside being in 3D. But 3D alone can't make a game boring, can it?

What makes Chrono Trigger superior to Crono Cross? I just can't figure this out. Any comments?

Chrono trigger within the first few minutes had you going. Okay go do some stuff then go into the past then come back and get thrown in jail. Essentially your being bounced around and it's fast paced and actiony, where as chrono cross is slow in the beginning.

Well they are two different games. It's like someone saying why is FFVII good but FFVIII isn't?

I agree that Cross takes a lot longer to start up, while Trigger is quick and entertaining right from the beginning. If you endure Cross for, say, 30 minutes, the game becomes a lot more involving after that.

I dunno, I like them both for different reasons. I like the sheer amount of different characters in Cross, with the various customization options. I liked the branching but not totally open plot. The battle system is certainly different.

Trigger is more of an old-school RPG for me, and I like it for that reason. However, while the story and graphics and sound are all excellent, the actual gameplay feels slightly creaky nowadays.

Both are very, very different games. While Chrono Trigger is, of course, one of the elite RPGs from the cartridge era and probably one of the better games ever released, Cross does it's fair share to live up to it's predecessor's pedigree.

In terms of musical scoring, character design, level design and overall composition, Chrono Cross is a gorgeous and vastly impressive game. I genuinely enjoyed traveling from place to place, discovering new characters and, more than anything, the soundtrack.

There are several complaints about the plot and battle system and I can understand people feeling that way, but I feel like it isn't so bad that it would ruin the gaming experience for you. I didn't like either at first, but before long, I was completely stuck in it. Like someone else said, it just takes some time to work into and get used to.

I also disagree with you on ff8.

I tried several times on ff8 but i simply couldn't get into it,no matter how many times i tried i just couldn't get into it.

I wanted to try chrono cross cause chrono trigger was really good.

I think both are great and the only reason you don't like cross is because you think they will be connected because of the title. while they can be vaguely connected they are largly diffrent games. when you treat them as sequals or something like that cross seems to fall short if you started with trigger and vice versa.

Somehow, I always have the urge to defend Chrono Cross.

It's a good game, I thought. I personally loved the battle system; well, love is a bit strong since it can get tedious, but I don't see any reason to hate it. Either way, I thought the allocation system in particular was excellent. If nothing else, it was pleasantly original, something that RPGs of the day tended to lack (I wouldn't know about the current state of them, though).

The story can get a bit twisted and confusing, admittedly, but I didn't notice so much. Maybe because I tend not to play video games primarily for enthralling narratives (either that or I'm such a genius I was just able to sort the whole bit out subconsciously).

Once upon a time, I too got the urge to finally understand the connection between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. I think it's the popular thing to just ignore their crossroads entirely and consider them different universes of games. But I think that's off-base (especially since Crono and the game make cameos in Cross). Well, it's all speculation at this point how the two interrelate, but I've got at least 75% of it straight in my head. It's quite a bit to spell out on paper, but I think a good starting place is to try to wrap your head around the consideration that Chrono Cross might be a prequel to Trigger rather than a sequel. Even moreso, a prequel AND a sequel. It's all about Time Travel, remember?

Yeah, it's a confusing thing so I'll stop there.

Bottom line is that I thought Chrono Cross was a worthwhile game (something I rarely vouch for in an RPG anymore). I distinctly remember picking up Cross and FFIX at the same time, and deciding later on that Cross edged the latter out just barely.

Oh, FFIX, if only you didn't have a 4th disc. Then we could have been lovers.

Half the reason Trigger is the general favourite and Cross is scowled at is because of the preconceptions that fans of Trigger had going into the game. Despite the name (Chrono Cross, instead of Chrono Trigger II) and despite the developers saying that Cross is not a sequel, that is still what the fans expected. They were expecting the same sort of gameplay, which also changed.

What's in a name? When it comes to certain things, a name is everything. To this day, I remain convinced that if the name of the game was different (ie. no Chrono and/or Trigger), it would have been far more successful because fans would have been much less expectant. Unfortunately, to connect the games' universes, the developers felt that they needed to put "Chrono" in there.

Had Square released the game without hinting at all that the games were connected (with no Chrono in the title, of course) and let the fans figure out the connection on their own, it would have been one of those revelations / Holy Cow! moments that video gamers would still be talking about today.

I love both Trigger and Cross to death and it burns me up to see people on either side of the debate trashing the other.
