Thing is, my PS3 won't play PS2 games, but does fine with FFVI for PS1, anyone got a clue why? Is it just the different format or what? I tried it on a whim and voila, this PS1 game plays on my PS3, alas PS2 games do not...odd.

Only the older models of PS3 play PS2 games. They removed it from newer consoles to help cut production costs. Same with removing some of the USB ports. You can check Playstation's official website and figure out which model PS3 you have and find out what games you can play.

Yeah I was aware about some of the different models that Sony had put out for the costs of production, just thought it odd that it would play PS1 games is all I'm saying. I guess it's because MGS3's a PS2 game? Backwards compatibility is a weird issue with the current system. It's very limited on both the 360 and PS3, and on the PS3 especially it depends on which model you own. The first PS3s contained the exact same Emotion Engine hardware that the PS2 used, so it could play all the same PS2 and PS1 games that a slim PS2 could. Other PS3s, to cut production costs, increase possible storage, and make the system easier to update, cut out the Emotion Engine in favor of software emulation. Since PS1 games are on CDs, they're easier to emulate than most PS2 games, which are almost all on DVDs. But really, I don't think it's much of an issue. Was there this much of an outcry when the N64 couldn't play SNES games? And why is the PS3 getting so much backwards compatibility flak when their PS1/PS2 emulation is so much more vast than the 360's XBox emulation? -------------------- |

I think (and certainly in my opinion) that the reason Sony is getting backlash over the backwards compatibility is that the original models had (basically/almost) FULL emulation of the back catalogue, and now there is no option for a premium priced PS3 with the full engine. So not so much that we don't have it as we DID have it and they took it away. To cut costs so they could make more (or any) money per system. Boo. |

I think it is even hurting their sales of the PS3 system. I saw this story on the Yahoo! front page. PS2 has a great collection of "Great Value" games, backward compatibility to PS1, comes with built in DVD player, and is only $99 bucks, compared to the PS3 $399.

Sony has stopped making backwards compatible PS3s and they're almost impossible to find so I had to blow almost a hundred dollars on a new PS2 to replace my ancient broken one. I would hardly call that "more vast" than the 360's emulation -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. That's probably why they don't want much compatibility, because they are still making the PS2. When they stop producing the PS2, they will probably come out with a new PS3 that can play all of those games. -------------------- |

I remember reading at one point that the Nintendo DS is outselling the PS3. But that was awhile ago, so no idea if that is true.

This isn't entirely true, since *some* PS3 systems ARE backwards compatible - It depends on the console version. |

you can check vgchartz.com if you want to see up to date numbers, but basically, the DS has been dominating since its release. 2:1 over #2 Wii,
