Article talking about the add!
Direct TV's latest commercial features David Spade doing his "Richard" character from the movie Tommy Boy doing the part were Chris Farley puts on his coat and sings the famous "Fat Guy in a little coat...". The seen was altered to show "Richard" saying "that instead of putting up with a ton of fun" as he points at Farley, and then says "I could instead be at home watching Direct TV", not exactly what he says, but it goes along those lines. I have seen the commercial and to tell you the truth I really didn't have any problems with it, but then again I never even met Farley or anyone from his family so I really don't know how they feel about it. Should we care? Is it really bad avertising? -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |

No way, it's classic cinema and a classic scene, just like all the other ads. For all I know, some of the actors in other scenes may be dead as well. Why must a tragic young death be treated differently than one of another kind? In other case, you're using reverence.
Does anyone really believe that Farley wouldn't want to be remembered and commemorated for his best Comedic scenes? -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

Well I don't know, since he himself regrets doing it, but for me I don't see any problem with it. Because a lot of Farley's comedy was centered around his weight anyways. Most of the comedy he did on SNL was about his weight.

I'm reasonably sure it's a non issue as far as taste is concerned. The family may be bitter about it, depending upon weather or not they got royalties from his appearance. But laws about licensing an image or a character portrayal after the creator/actor dies are fuzzy anyway.
Funny thing is, my circle of friends just had this discussion last night. -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Enjoy. I was a soldier, now I just play one in video games. |

Quote (Tidu-who @ 29th October 2009 17:31) Does anyone really believe that Farley wouldn't want to be remembered and commemorated for his best Comedic scenes? This is exactly what I've been thinking. I mean, I love to make people laugh and I feel as though Farley did too. If I died, young or old, tragically or peacefully, I'd want to be able to continue making people laugh. Is it funny? Yes. I mean, I see there being a possibility of poor form, but I also think that Farley would have approved of the commercial; therefore it's all good. |

The entire idea of the joke is that he was a fat man trying to get into a little suit. So he was himself being inappropriate, and I agree that he would've liked it. But I also see why David Spade would apologize. -------------------- |
