Quote (Kane @ 6th September 2009 15:25) I too love Linguistics. I'm also pursuing a minor in TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) My girlfriend got a degree in linguistics with a minor in TESOL. Now she's doing a Masters and a Doctorate in linguistics. As for me, I majored in East Asian Studies with a focus on China. I guess as far as my expertise goes its Chinese culture and, to a lesser degree, Japanese culture. I'm now beginning to work on a Masters in Education so I can teach high school world history. -------------------- Wha? Thanks to me? |

I have a B.A. in political science with a minor in criminal justice; my polisci specializations were political geography and the Middle East. When I graduated, I had plans to attend law school to become either a prosecutor or a public defender and take the Foreign Service Exam at some point in time.
I went to law school for a semester, absolutely hated it, and made the worst grades I'd ever made in my life. I still have no idea why I failed so spectacularly, but in a weird way I'm really glad I did. I would have been a miserable lawyer. I've always been interested in both radio and teaching. I couldn't break into Dallas's radio market and, as the icing on the fail cake, slipped and broke my knee in May. Homebound with only my computer for company, I started emailing a local university's teaching program coordinator. After I was steady enough to drive, I went to visit them and fell in love with the program. It was really hard to throw away a dream I'd had for almost 15 years, but the more I learn about my future profession the more I realize I'm exactly where I should be. I'll be teaching in high school American history (where my degree is most applicable) in my hometown (which I love.) I'm also tacking on certifications to teach Latin and Advanced Placement history. I'll have my own classroom next fall, and my end goal is to be a polisci professor. It's a good feeling to get up in the morning and your first thought is, "Ahh, life is awesome!" ![]() In non-school related things, I'm getting to be a pretty good apprentice electrician from watching my dad (a master) work. ![]() -------------------- I figured I had paid my debt to society by paying my overdue fines at the McLennan County Library. It's a site I spend quite a bit of time on and there is a lot of useful information. Yeah, I think it is best to try and educate yourself as well as possible, far in advance. That way you aren't stuck like the guy in this thread who signed for a contract that pays less than the average salary of six years ago (which is close to $1,000 a month difference). The last thing you could possibly need is to get screwed while stuck in another country. I started out in computer programming, my childhood dream, only to have the walls crumble around me as I was informed that Basic and visual basic were obsolete languages that my university didn't even offer classes in, and I ended up dropping out.
After about 9 months, I had my epiphany, and went back to community college and managed to get an associates degree in Culinary Arts and Dietetics. So not only do I know how to make food good, I know how to make it good for you. ![]() -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Many students go off to a university as soon as they graduate high school, which is something I don't fully understand. Even if you're going for a bachelor degree, why would you get your basics anywhere other than community college? I just don't understand the point in paying tons of money for what amounts as an extension of everything you studied in high school? 2 yr Performing Arts at College - Grade DDM
Looking to do the 3 yr B.A. Honors at a Drama School. Taking a couple years out though to get more life experience and experience of the industry. Just chalked up my first short film role. I'll probably be twenty before I start applying for Drama School. |

I took summer classes at a CC before i wnet to college after high school but it turns out that all the credits i earned at the cc wouldn't count here so i ended up losing out those credits. also another option to look at is summer school i take classes every summer here becuase it is so much cheaper and in the end will allow me to graduate early saving me more money(no that i actually pay for much because thats what scholrships are for). Some people also go because of the scholrships that are available to them as soon as they graduate from high school. Now that being siad i think that with the proper planning going to a CCand then a university can save you so much, not just money but hassle as well Sorry for the wierd looking post i tryed to edit out the quotes in teh post i quoted that were not really what i was responding to. I'm currently Majoring in Firefighting Management and Minoring in Criminal Justice. I'm pretty much dead set on continuing public service, and the Firefighting Management translates well with my Army skills.

Physical education (including adapted PE) and Health education.
Edit: also, I'm a decent handy-man, considering I was going to go into construction carpentry before I made my leap into college. Did some electrical as a job too. I'm in between colleges at the moment, but I plan on ending up majoring in Theater, and possibly minoring in a variety of things: Music, Management, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy...
I also know that I'll be hard-pressed to find a steady job (especially considering most of my friends are Engineering or Mathematics majors). -------------------- |

I've got a B.S. double major in Physics and Applied Mathematics, and had about 3 years of grad school in physics before I quit for personal reasons.
I'm currently working as a php/javascript programmer, so yeah, that's another expertise. Other than that, I do have many other interests, but I'm pretty mediocre in them. I have my degree in Massage Therapy, but I really never got into the field. Though I do love impressing other medical professionals with the amount of training MTs receive.
Really though, I'm a jack of all trades kinda guy. I'm good at everything, but lack the patience to master anything. Currently I'm building a small business thats dipping our hands into multiple projects. We'll most likely do what Donald Trump does. Create a business, use the revenue to fund another business, and eventually create a giant loop that covers all my taxes and turns me into my own private stock market. Worth billions with minimal private assets, but able to write off everything as an expense. -------------------- think you're a true rp dork - try it live action shifted lands |

I've never heard of a bachelor degree in massage therapy. Is it one of those courses that your community college offers an associate in? Seems like a lot of you are interested in linguistics. That's my field of expertise too, though I study Applied Linguistics (that is, the practical application of linguistics in teaching and translation). The languages I study are English and Spanish (and Japanese right now, but I'm just beginning and it's not a university course or anything) with Polish being my mother tongue. And it's actually a bit difficult for me to pick one particular aspect of my studies that I'm best at (or most interested in) - because I love translating literature, I'm interested in linguistics in general and I enjoy teaching languages - which kind of makes me a perfect student - too bad my grades don't reflect that ;)

History is definitely my strongest suit, although I also have a knack for English, Psychology and believe it or not Physics, although that talent doesn't really extend to the other sciences for some reason.

As this year has progressed I have found that my areas of expertise has actually changed somewhat, or rather it has become more clear where my expertise are in my fields.
In political Science I have become better in International political systems versus American politics In Philosophy I have become better in mid 1700's german philosophy such as Liebniz and Spinoza. |
