By era, i mean that this site is somewhat divided in their tastes
Some seem to be fans of the Final Fantasies from VI onwards others like the older games, including VI Everyone's a fan of VI though, from what I can tell I'm personally a slave of the 3D era. with the exception of IV and VI, I didn't really enjoy the other games pre-VI I don't know why, just didn't get the appeal. couldn't even play V for longer than two hours without switching off. might be because VII was my first FF, and I find it easier to get into the storyline :/ On the flipside, I couldn't stand X-2, but then, most people couldn't. This isn't a place for slamming others for their tastes. I'm just curious This post has been edited by Locke.Stocke.And2SmokingBarrels on 2nd December 2008 17:06 -------------------- And on the eighth day, God created Final Fantasy.... |

I like the older games, but I tend to like older things more then newer..
EDIT: Also, if anyone cares, FFI on the NES was the first one I played.. and number 3 (the original, on the NES) is my favourite. This post has been edited by Gigantuar on 7th December 2008 21:18 |

Why only two eras?
Why not per console generation? There's been more than one major change in the way the series is being run. Also, for the sake of the argument: none in particular. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. I know there's been this topic before....
I don't remember which one I said before, but I couldn't decide now so I null voted. Each era has had its gems. -------------------- Why, hello guys! Haven't been around here in a loooong time! http://dragcave.net/user/LadyTwi http://www.backloggery.com/ladytwi |

Here is the old poll on the subject (started by yours truly
FYI my answer remains the same. FFVIII is my favorite FF, with FFX in a close second. So, why I did really enjoy FFIV and FFVI, there isn't too much competition in my mind. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Im actually kinda right in the middle. I like both generations a lot. My original Final Fantasy games were IV and Vi, but VII still remains my favorite.(despite the crappy translation) Im also in love with Final Fantasy IX and Im ok with 10, but I absolutely hate 12 and am not going to go near 13.
The old Final Fantasy games such as 4, 6, and to a lesser extent , 5 , have impressive storylines and decent length, not to mention 2d graphics which to this day I still like. Final Fantasy 7 and onwards have good graphics, and usually a good storyline. I really can't decide, I really think before Square made 12 they were on a roll, almost always making good games. If I really want to pick an era to hate, I start with X-2 and beyond. -------------------- Ff7 current game progress:Just finished the underwater reactor, on to rocket town! |

i would say that the three best are IV - VII, and otherwise i wouldve gone with the older ones, but since u split up VI, i can say that the newer ones are better. even though they owe alot to the old ones.
im kind of glad u did that, cause i think people wouldve had alot of trouble with I - VI vs. VII - XII. -------------------- |

Quote (BlitzSage @ 5th December 2008 08:22) i would say that the three best are IV - VII. I would also say those are the three best, and I'd probably throw CT in there (again, great game, even if not best ever IMO) even though it wasn't an FF game, since it was part of that Square era and people relate it heavily to FF. I hesitated to post because I've always wondered - do I think they're the best because I grew up with them or because they really are the best? You're about 8 years younger than me though, which makes me think that the greatness of these games breaches the generation gap. It's really hard to split up "eras" on the basis of anything other than console. For me, I would lump FFVII in with the "older school" or FFs, before the popularity changed it, and classify FFVIII forward as the new wave. For someone even more old school than me, FFVI might be classified as the new wave - I know when it came out the "steampunk" setting was criticized by some as "not fantasy" almost as much as the "cyberpunk" setting of FFVII later would. I would also certainly say that w/ FFXII, and the departure of the established Sakaguchi/Uematsu elements (and Amano, though he left much earlier) that we are entering another new era of FF. Maybe that is a good thing, and the old has gone stale and needs new life; I haven't played it, but FFXII seems to have gotten great reviews. |

If all the old ones were made 3D we might think differently.

I actually did just mean 4, 6, and 7, since that's the order they were released in the US. And I'd also include CT in there. I don't count 5 only because I didn't play it until years later, but it definitely was developed and released (at least in Japan) in the same period, so I guess it counts. 5 is a great game, but I don't consider it as good as 4, 6, 7, and CT. |

I went for the 'old school' that is FF VI and below.
Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy FF X and FF XII. FF VIII, for some bizzarre reason, has skyrocketed up my 'favorite FF' list over the last couple of years. It's third. But well, I grew up and still thoroughly love FF IV and FF VI. FF I (GBA version), FF II (GBA Version) and FF V are good, but not great in my book. VII, IX and X-2 I am not a fan of. So yeah, FF VI and earlier. I do it 'old school'. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. I personally had bonds with the stories of FF4, and FF6(in my opinion).

I thought that this poll would definitely be skewed for the first option, seeing the rather obvious main topic of this site, but I was surprised to see that the vote so far, with me voting for option one (older games), is 8-10 in the second option's favor.

I've only played three of the earlier games (I didn't like FF1 too much but FF6 and FF4 are great) and I've enjoyed all seven of the post-FF6 games I've played, so I voted for the more recent era.

I agree, but you could say that is because of technical limitations that the older ones couldnt support a big story. You do have to give the older ones their due respect, because they started it all, and they still stand the test of time. -------------------- |

I respect and like FF1 (the story was good but most importantly laid the foundation for the FFs to come). I loved how the magic system was similar to Dungeons & Dragons. The reason why I didn't like it that much was because of my own experiences; I got frustrated a lot because I didn't know what to do and where to go. I have to null vote because it really depends on what I'm in the mood for.
As Laszlow said, it's really a mix of old and new school - both have had their gems and their turds. FF2 and FF3 weren't that good, just as FF7 and FF8 weren't. The series itself does not transition easily - it's leap to the ATB system was clumsy as was its jump to 3D. I guess if we go just by volume of games, I'll have to say the new era, (which I call everything FF7 and up) because that gives me FFT, FF9, FFX, and, to a lesser extent, FF12, but if I'm not in the mood for those, we have my favorite in the series (FF6), and FF4, FF5 and FF1. Have to stay null - it's all a matter of timing. This post has been edited by Asylum Outpatient on 21st December 2008 02:30 -------------------- You don't scare me, you talking blobs of oozing slop! The older ones were simple & yet still challenging & innovating, even though plots from Final Fantasy 1, 3-5 were rehashes of the same thing over and over again (eg: Four powerful elemental crystals that improve the lives and conditions of the planet for the people and some badguy wants to remove/destroy them to become even more powerful)
While the newer ones, have a better "atmosphere" that makes you feel like you're actually in the game itself. That's why I still have interest in that. Even though the difficulty levels aren't really balls-to-the-wall equivalent. The plot style hasn't really changed or improved since maybe 6? But I don't give a damn, as long as there's a point to playing the game. And no, I don't play games just because of shiny & colorful 4D graphics, I'm a true gamer who has no problem believing that a red/white/black colored 8-bit square is a warrior). Good graphics only makes a game better. (visually) See what I mean? I'm caught in a double-edged sword when it comes to deciding my "favorite era of Final Fantasy". I think both were/are just fine! But I like stick to FF9 and below (except for 8 and for 2). ~AngelWitch666~ -------------------- I've been locked away for all these years Now I can see the light of day Things have changed a lot since I was last out here I guess that's the way things, way things go |

I don't really see the series as an "old" and "new" era, if I have to divide them, it's strictly by which console they were released on and even then, it means little to me.
In terms of settings, come of the newer games are just as rural and fantastic as the originals ever were, and even VII, with it's Midgar and it's Junon, also had places like Wutai and Costa Del Sol. The focus shifted away from crystals being a major plot point (or not even in the plot at all in some games) but they're all just as much a Final Fantasy. Except 8. I like to pretend that game never happened and, similarly to what I thought as a child when I owned a Final Fantasy II, III and then VII, that those silly people at Square just don't know how to count. If I have to absolutely pick a time when I enjoyed Final Fantasy the most, I'd have to say it was the time between VI and VII, because that was really when I actually started to care about these games, rather than just playing them so I'd have something to do. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |
