Quote (FraudulentTommah @ 13th July 2009 18:10) I love love love mathematics. Abstract algebra, differential equations, topology, analysis, all good stuff. Though this is the case, my worst classes through my undergrad career were science classes. I got C's in all of them because I loathed the process of having to memorize things. This happened in physics, chemistry, and geology. In math we're taught how things we memorize develop (which naturally gets remembered), but in science it feels like reading a factsheet and I hate it. I think I'd really enjoy higher level science classes, though. I hear ya. Memorizing facts and just having to believe the professor or teacher that what they tell us is true is not fun at all. You're totally right though: the upper-level science classes (physics and chem especially) are much more in-depth and do explain the whole process and derivations. I found the upper level classes much easier than the lower level introductory classes. -------------------- Is PJ |

Quote (BlitzSage @ 13th July 2009 01:45) Quote (Magitek_slayer @ 12th July 2009 11:43) Problem also that countries never talk about their downfalls or their bad stuff. They want to talk about the glories and glorify that country to death. spain never talks about the spain never mentions the spanish inquisition or killing off all the indians or religious fanatics or franco. If you read fully a book about history of a culture like greece and egypt and such, there are tons of things that are interesting that they never tell you in school,or at least when i was a kid they didn't and in that particular class. That's why I enjoyed my dual enrollment (college) American History and Western Civ. classes I took, because while they basically skimmed over the book, they showed everything, the good and the bad. Of course, that's mainly because the instructor was really good, and he loved talking about politics and stuff. History classes have always been my favorite. Your really lucky i guess. I guess i was a bit too lazy too, problem with life is that you do not realize the consecuences of not trying to get something out of school before its too late. It isn't too late of course and yes i could go back, right now i consider that what i might do is take courses in computing in minor stuff and possibly something else to see if i can get something out of it. I guess i always felt my dream felt silly and like a pipe dream so i never tried, and ultimately failed. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Quote (Magitek_slayer @ 14th July 2009 17:58) ultimately failed. Well, that's the thing, you haven't ultimately failed yet. All it takes is the right mindset, you know? School for me was never about how good you were at something, it was how hard you worked at it. I could've been top of my class with a 4.0 if I had really focused on schoolwork, but I just didn't care that much. But I tried to do my best and get the best grades possible, not because my parents or anybody else encouraged me, because I wanted to do it. My philosophy is this: teachers don't teach you, you teach yourself. Someone else can talk all day, but you have to listen to them, learn, and then better yourself. Even if you don't like school, like I did, you can push yourself to do better, and only you can truly force yourself. -------------------- |

Afrikaans the compulsory secondary language in good old South bloody Africa. It's the only thing about SA that I hate. From here we get such lovely phrases as bliksem , jou ma , kak , vrot and puus it is the singular most useless subject in the world as only SA and Namibia speak it

I know a few people who speak it and they tell me they can understand a fair bit, but not all. You could possibly add Belgium and Holland onto the list next to SA and Namibia. Also, you can sing the Afrikaans part of the national anthem at the 2010 World Cup! From a foreign perspective, that's pretty cool. I wish I could speak Gaelic. I tried learning a bit of Dutch because I was cycling in Belgium. I gave up fairly quickly when I realised everyone was dying to practice their English and were not impressed with my attempts at their language. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Close to dutch yes but not quite. Trying to speak Afrikaans to the Belgiumish peoples wouldn't work. I belong to the scouts and we had some dutch Scouts over and they couldn't speak english and we could only understand what they were saying if they spoke in Baby Speak for us

Haha, I never had all that much trouble with maths. I suppose if you screwed up mastering something along the lines you're in trouble but even then it isn't that hard.
I suppose it's subjective though, lots of people love chemistry but like I said earlier I'm terrible at Chemistry. (One would think a scientist would be good at something like that. ![]() -------------------- If god is all-forgiving then why do we have to kill people in his name? |

In high school I never really had a weak subject, except calculus. In college the only real weakness I have had would be in the theology courses that I have taken.

Dude, Crash, you can't triple post like that. It's in the forum rules. Please don't do it again.

My weakest was probably calculus and math-related stuff. I don't cheat that often, but I went Boris Onischenko on that curriculum.

Math is actually one of my best subjects.
Science, though, was clearly my worst. I used to be really into science until I took AP Chemistry my sophomore year of high school, at which point I went "you know, theater looks pretty cool...". Spanish, too. My Spanish I teacher wasn't that great, my Spanish II teacher didn't even show up some days, and my Spanish III teacher wasn't that great either. My Spanish IV teacher had a doctorate in Philosophy and was fluent in about four different languages. Needless to say, I didn't do so hot. And while few of my grades in school were explicitly bad, nearly all of them could have been much better. ADHD sucks. -------------------- |

I struggled with languages until I could ditch them. Then I struggled with History, not because it didn't engage me but I just didn't need to do well in it. So I didn't revise and got an 'E' at GSCE.

I used to be awful at English. Most of the time I was just scraping by and barely passed my classes. I excelled in math, science and history.
Halfway through high school things flipped. I was failing miserably in math and science, but was getting straight A's in English. One thing did remain constant though. My programming marks were always abysmal. I'm pretty sure it was because I always found myself playing flash games when I should've been working. |
