Jump Magazine (from Japan) released information about a new character in Final Fantasy XIII. According to Final Fantasy Union, his name is Hope Estheim; he uses a boomerang as a weapon and has a history with Snow.

Details remain sketchy at this time, though as with all such new information about new Square Enix games, we should see more coming in quite short order.

He looks a lot like Tidus. Hmm, is Snow going to be the main protagonist? That would make her the first since Terra. I think this game is going to be good.

Something hit me.
Since when did they start ANNOUNCING characters for Final Fantasies? It feels like a cheap Hollywood maneuver, trying to market the cast and build a fanbase for them before the actual game is even there.
Sad point, in Japan it works to the point of people making cosplay of some of them - I've seen Lightning and Sahz already.

That does not make sense. If 13 turns out crap so will Versus.

Well in reply to the fact that they are trying to build a fan base ahead of time and the possibility of it being a crap game.

I say what do you expect from a series that flourished in the SNES days and started going downhill on PS2 if not for most late PSX. I take a look at this in comparison to I know this is a bit off topic.

But look at the Mega Man series. The original series was awesome X 1-6 was pretty good Zero was alright but then they tried the RPG games that sucked . My point is some series just need to be put down like a faithful old bloodhound bit by a rabid raccoon.

Don't get me wrong I love FF but it seems like the more people want prettier graphics and less good stories the worse it will get. FF and MM are the only 2 of many games that are falling apart that I can think of now. I'd mention more but I'd get knocked down for being too off topic and I can't think of any more at the moment... But there are more!

That does not make sense. If 13 turns out crap so will Versus.

well with versus, im intrigued at how the battle system and story will play out, seeing as it doesn look as bad as xiii's very x-2 feel to it

Yeah, I completely disagree with this. The games are to be completely different, sharing only a similar mythos. They're being developed by entirely different teams, as well.

I do think this business of announcing characters gradually and slowly releasing info is a bit odd. Sure, I think it does build some excitement. But if the game doesn't deliver, then all this buildup will just look really silly.

Well, as we've all learned with the assortment of countdown clocks we've been getting lately, Square has been trying to build up hype for their games, and this just seems like a ploy. But when you think about it, they have pushed this game back for quite a while, and they want to keep people interested till Spring '10 rolls around.

You also have to remember that they just bought Eidos, and they are really trying hard to gain more American fans. This seems like a part of their strategy.

Funny how someone with the long name said it's not looking forward to XIII, are you smoking crack?

Dude, both games are going to be awesome and sweet. Have you even played or even seen the demo for XIII?, my guess is not because from what I have seen, the 45 minutes that are available to watch and/or play look nasty. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to XIII, Versus AND Agito, and if I could play the other one, don't remember the name, but it's for cell phones, I would play that too.

True Final Fantasy fans play all Final Fantasies, except XI.

On topic: Hope is a stupid first name, the character looks extremely stupid rivaling even Vaan from XII, but what the hell?, I'm used to this female looking dudes on every Final Fantasy.

Final Fantasy needs a new character designer, how many times are we supposed to play as Cloud Strife?

Based on screenshots and information like this, I was sure XII was going to be poor and now I think it's brilliant, even if I don't particularly like half the main and non-playable characters. Ashe, Basch and Balthier were great to play as, and their stories had me hooked throughout, but the others were dull. Ashe and Lightening are going to have a lot in common I think, as will Hope and Vaan possibly? XIII looks like it'll have the same polar division between good and bad that XII did, but overall I'm sure the game will be good.

I think we've all been around enough to know not to bet against Square, so I wouldn't either. It's really the only game I'm looking forward to in the next year. I've been a Final Fantasy fan long enough to see two games come out, X and XII, and they both exceeded expectations.

And I think Estheim is interesting. I like fantasy names that you don't understand the meaning to.

True Final Fantasy fans play all Final Fantasies, except XI.

the reason im not looking forward to it is because it looks so much like x-2, which was awful. i have been following the game since its announce, ive seen the demo, havent played it because i dont have access to it as its not on the playstation store where i am. visually the game looks amazing, however i dont like the direction that ive seen it going in. also, Agito was going to be for cell phones, but last i heard it will be on the psp now.

to your next point: as a true final fantasy fan, i have played pretty much every single one of them and their remakes save for a few non-canon ones. i have played xi as well, and did so for quite some time.

anyway, the effeminate male roles have been around for so long i dont even care anymore. really the only one that got to me was tidus, and he is still the main reason i refuse to put up with ff x

Agito is on PSP now. I think SaffireWeapon's a little confused; when Square-Enix took out the FF XIII patents, they named four titles: FF XIII, Versus, Agito, and Dissidia. Dissidia was later revealed to be a massive FF crossover, and Agito was revealed to be a cell phone multiplayer RPG that was moved over to PSPs.

EDIT: Oops, apparently I only read the first letter of anyone's name nowadays....

I will definitely PLAY XIII, but honestly, Versus looks like the game to watch. XIII looks like graphic eye candy with no substance and, frankly, a stupid plot.

Still, we could be totally wrong!
