I just saw this Shadow quote for the first time yesterday. If you don't speak to shadow in figaro, crazy man's house, or kholingen, you will be introduced to him for the first time in Albrook's seaport on your way to thamasa. In such a case, the first thing he tells you is this:

"I've foresaken the world. Some people call me..."

The quote is found here, at 4:45

1. i think it's cool that i've never seen this, and maybe others.
2. i dont know what he means, and why does he say this only now?

I've had an eternity to ponder the meaning of things....and now I have an answer!!

It might be from the GBA version, what with the new script and all.

Yeah, I've never heard of it before.

As for what it means, it sets up his character, and it also tells why people call him Shadow.

I've never heard of it either. I too would venture to say it's just another way to introduce him and allow you to name him, it definitely fits him, though.

Yeah. Plus, when you think about it storywise, the next section is the first part of the game where he is required to be in the party. And

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
we start to learn about his relationship with Relm.

So you need to set up his character before that happens.

Most people first meet him in South Figaro or in Sabin's scenario, so it's not surprising that we've never seen it. I imagine that the line was in the original in some form.

My bad.

I actually watched the video just now. (Dang...all that nostalgia coming back...what with the recent Rage topic, now I want to find a patch that fixes the missing rage bug and various other bugs and maybe makes the game harder and stuff (anyone know where i90east's expert version 2 is?) and play the game again...

Ahh, yes, it is in the SNES version. Looks like just a simple script change. I practically talk to all NPCs I meet, and I hire Shadow because one extra party member is always useful (and money isn't hard to come by). I assume most people somehow or otherwise first-encounter him earlier, and thus miss this scene.

Does that occur if you see him and talk to him in South Figaro or in Sabin's scenario, or do you not have to deal with him at all for it to happen?

Wow, I've indeed never seen that before! Nice find. By now I thought there would have been a text dump for the game.

Only if you have never talked to him before. If you meet him in South Figaro or the Old Man's House, it prompts you to name him, making this line superfluous.
