I find that Gau takes more effort than I like putting into him. Also, the rage list is horribly unorganized.

That being said, he can be amazing, and he hits 255 defense easily at endgame. Still a no vote, though.

Of course, though, you encounter Gigantos far, far later in the WoB.

So, if he has better stats, the rage is stronger? I thought that was completely dependant on Gau.

No.

Actually, I just checked Djibriel's Rage Guide, ver. 1.3 again.

Quote
Gigantos    Magnitude8  Safe
            absorbs Earth, weak against Poison

It's the pallete-swap of HadesGigas, a monster that'll appear more in a normal
game as it can be obtained after Zozo where this baby appears on the Floating
Continent as a monster-in-a-box. Gigantos has a Safe where HadesGigas hasn't,
though, so no complaining.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HadesGigas  Magnitude8
            absorbs Earth, weak against Poison

The two debating over the proper Magnitude8 Rage are fortunately very close
to each other in an alphabetized list. HadesGigas is a very nice Rage with an
extremely powerful attack, but is to Gigantos what Anguiform is to Chimera:
much more famous due to chronological advantage yet inferior in the long run.

So the only thing that Gigantos has that HadesGigas doesn't have is automatic Safe status. Which does make it slightly, but strictly, superior.

That was a rather interesting piece of information. I spent way more time than I should have, but I now know that more than just Locke can do 8 shots of 9999. Good stuff.

Not a big fan of Gau.

I never used him in battle. Like at all. I didn't really think much of him as a character (not to say he was bad, but that I prefered others to him), and that sorta caused me to work around him whenever possible.

Gau was great

He was funny and the problem with him is you had to be 100% sure of what ability you wanted from him granted he was not always the most effective.

During the end i had him in my team but i used magic instead of rage because i could controll it and because i liked him as a character.

I spent untold hours with FFVI back in the SNES days. I think I leveled every character in my party to the maximum Lvl. 99 - except Gau. I just couldn't get into his Rage ability and how random and unreliable the attacks are.

I can't imagine how much time I spent with Gau on the Veldt (?) having him learn new attacks and constantly being disappointed with what he came crawling back with. LOL.

I used Gau only when I had to - when the party was broken up at the end of the game for example. And then he was just cannon fodder that I usually never bothered to revive. Poor Gau...

It was uwao that made me hate him although he is rather comical and when he meets his dad and the party picks out clothes for him I was once again ROTFLMAOIHBOT (Rolling on the floor laughing my apple off in hospital because of that)

Well, I thought that scene was rather SAD (sad), since he was one of the only characters to have a completely unresolved ending. But that's just me...

I'm in the process of my own FF marathon waiting for XIII to come out. So I'm playing through the US released games. (i.e. 1 from origins, then jump to IV, and now I'm playing through VI, even though I have my NES & SNES versions, I'm playing them on my PS3).

Gau's pretty much just pushed my buttons. Nothing like a mass Cure spell when people are low on health to kill a party member because his rage made cure spells harmful to him. I pulled him out of my party for now. Will add him back in if I decide to go rage hunting on the Veldt. Plus I have Mog now, so that makes 9 characters for parties and Celes/Locke/Sabin/Edgar were already leveled up pretty good from my travels.

I know this is my own fault for not paying attention to what various rages do, but it's still frustrating.

I liked gau,he reminds me of a lost puppy dog.

He is innocent and good and has some funny lines with sabim.

He also has some good rages that hurt bad even on high levels at the end of the game if used properly

I rather like using Gau. First he gets awesome offense, and when that drops off, he becomes a defensive monster.

Well, at first I was going to say, "Okay, that's it, I can't use him." But, today I just discovered I had Stray Cat. Catscratch is really good. Today it did 8200 dmg and he's on level 48.

My first few times playing I never used him. My last few times playing I used him.

I only ever used a handful of his rages. I used stray cat for normal attacking, then I think there were a few good elemental ones, and a healing one I think. It's been a few years since my last playthrough.

A lot of the time in RPGs I just use normal attacks anyway (I never got into the magic strategy aspect), and if that's the case, it might as well be Gau and Stray Cat.

What me sucks more with his rage than he is uncontrollable, is the HUGE amount of monsters he can imitate. I mean, it is really hard to recall which MONSTER DOES WHAT, so you lose the overview very fast. :/
Eh Blitzsage, nice to have you still around ^^

In my opinion, Gau is indispensable in FF6.

As mentioned before, Stray Cat is definitely one of Gau's best rages, and from what I have heard, CatScratch = Fight x 4. This effectively means that Stray Cat is useful until everybody does 9999 damage every hit anyways, because in that case, Stray Cat won't do any better.

Stray Cat definitely wouldn't seem like a monster you would want to Rage just by fighting it. Stray Cat as a monster is not very dangerous at all. I think I only remember seeing it use CatScratch ONCE, and it was pitiful, since the monster has so little attack power, even multiplied x4. But give it as a Rage to Gau and he will go ape shit, sometimes one hitting some weaker bosses in the WoB if you are a high enough level. And it sure seems to do it more than 50% of the time.

If Stray Cat seems to get less useful later in the game, it's time to amp it up by giving Gau a Merit Award, Tempest, and Offering, making him into a Wind God, unless you are unfortunate enough to be playing FFVI on the GBA. The only downside here is that the attack is no longer non-elemental, but fortunately, many more monsters are weak to Wind than absorb, half or nullify it.

Then there's NightShade. I haven't tried it. To me, an unblockable Muddle sounds useful, but it doesn't seem like the perfect Rage to me. For example, it would be pointless to use it on enemies that like to use attacks that hit all characters on the screen, like Quake and Merton. It also seems pointless if the target doesn't do as much damage as you do, in that case just use Stray Cat to kill it dead, instead of waiting longer for it to kill itself. So it would be best against bosses that don't use Quake or Merton and possibly in the Dinosaur Forest. It sounds like a good Rage, but it doesn't sound as flawless as everyone says it is.

Then there are "Tank" rages, like Magic Pot (a combination between Magic Mushrooms and Marijuana that makes you almost indestructable) and Intangir (Mute Gau to prevent suicide). Give Gau a True Knight and a Cure Ring and Gau will protect your party members. I would pick Magic Pot because it uses Cure 3 and doesn't wind up dead if you forget to Mute Gau.

All in all, Gau is a pretty valuable character, even in the WoR.

I can't stand Gau because it takes forever to fill up his rages, and I usually stop paying attention after awhile and accidentally attack him when he comes back. It would be better if you got EXP when gau leaps and when he returns, so it makes it not be such a waste of time for your other characters. In all the hours you spend trying to learn new rages, you're characters are rarely leveling. That is if you are even awarded experience, regardless, when you are on the Veldt. I can't remember off the top of my head.

I have never liked Gau. Even after reading Djibriel's FAQ where he mathematically proves that Gau is the best character in the game, I still hate him. Turn-based RPGs have little enough interaction for the fight scenes as it is (pick a command) do I really need to sit there while the character decides what he is going to do for me? Granted, he's got some powerful attacks that become available early in the game, but it's not worth the tedious effort of leaping in the friggin' Veldt, and the Rage attack has absolutely no logical correspondence to the attack the enemies use when you fight them. Even when you have a FAQ it doesn't matter, because the list isn't alphabetical. And not enough attention was paid to his story to make me care about his daddy issues.

At first I never used Gau. Now, I use him when you are forced to (Yay, cat scratch!) and after that I mostly ignore him. I mean, he can be very powerful, but not really my playing style nor one of my favourites.
