I was looking in here for information for this and thought the polls were interesting (and they’re simple enough for me to not mess up the translation).

This is the opinion of the V-jump readers in those times when FFVII was still on production (pre-production?), at the end of 1995.

Favorite character

Locke (FF6 1378 votes)
Edgar (FF6 1350 votes)
Celes (FF6 656 votes)
Setzer (FF6 568 votes)
Faris(FF5 526 votes)
Terra (FF6 459 votes)
Shadow (FF6 356 votes)
Bartz (FF5 320 votes)
Sabin (FF6 257 votes)
Rydia (FF4 192 votes)
Kain (FF4 163 votes)
Gilgamesh (FF5 102 votes)
Cecil (FF4 97 votes)
Relm (FF6 85 votes)
Edge (FF4 33 votes)

I’m surprised at Sabin beating Rydia AND Kain. Go Sabin!
Gilgamesh’s awesomeness manages to surpass party members.
Guess Relm is popular in Japan. (The truth is I’m sad she got more than double the votes that Edge got.)
Nowadays, with Dissidia, I imagine Cecil, Bartz and Terra being higher.

Best Couple category

Locke & Celes (FF6)
Cecil & Rosa (FF4)
Edge & Rydia (FF4)
Edgar & Terra (FF6)
Bartz & Relm (FF5) [Wait, what?, there must be a mistake in here, I say Faris.]
Edgar & Relm (FF6)
Locke & Terra (FF6)
Setzer & Daryl (FF6)
Bartz & Lenna (FF5)
Edgar & Celes (FF6)

Cecil/Rosa but no Kain/Rosa. Poor Kain, you don’t get any.
Edgar/Terra is the most popular fan-pairing. Edgar also gets paired with all the females in his group *coughwhorecough*, not even the legendary Butz can claim that.
Seeing Setzer/Daryl in there makes me smile.

Best duo category

Edgar & Sabin (FF6)
Palom & Porom (FF4)
Locke & Edgar (FF6)
Shadow & Interceptor (FF6)
Sabin & Gau (FF6)
Kain & Cecil (FF4)
Stargo & Relm (FF6)
Faris & Lenna (FF5)
Gau & Cyan(FF6)
Biggs & Wedge (FF6)

Twin power!
Shadow & Interceptor over Cecil & Kain?, Well, I got to admit they are quite the duo.
Biggs & Wedge managed to get a spot. Yay!

Edit: Found another one plus the FF8 poll

Favorite FFVI moment

Opera House (1342 votes)
Coin toss (583 votes)
Forever Rachel (451 votes)
Gau reunion with his father (297 votes)
Daryl's Tomb (209 votes)
Ending (154 votes)
Solitary Island (143 votes)
Night at Albrook (89 votes)
Gerad emerges (87 votes)
Dinner at the Empire (67 votes)

Favorite FFVIII character

Squall (1922 votes)
Laguna (1460 votes)
Rinoa (1412 votes)
Selphie (1011 votes)
Zell (887 votes)
Seifer (524 votes)
Quistis(411 votes)
Irvine (402 votes)
Fujin(367 votes)
Kiros (101 votes)
Ellone
Chocoboy [?]
Xu
Edea
Chocobo
Raijin
Ward
Biggs & Wedge.

Hope I didn’t mess up any name.

There is a part where Parom, Krile and Relm discuss the FFIV and FFV males (including Faris and Mid). Looks funny.

With six more games out and one more on the way how have things changed? I bet the lists look severely if not completely different. Your thoughts?

I'm not too surprised with these results given the time period. It looks like FFVI scored high, possibly due to it being more recent. I was surprised that Faris and Bartz were able to beat out the entire cast of FFIV though.

Awesome! I just love that FFVI scored higher. I don't like Relm so much, and I really don't like Terra, but seeing Edgar and Sabin as the best due was awesome.

As Death Penalty said, FFVI was the hot game at the time, so that’s why it dominates the polls. Nowadays, I say in Japan goes like this FFV>FFIV>FFVI, reverse the order for America.

On the other hand I’m sure FFVII characters wipe the floor with FFXII ones in terms of popularity. I’m not in touch with the fandom post the SNES games, so my question is: which one is more popular Cloud/Aerith or Cloud/Tifa? *hides*

There seems to be a poll for FFVIII characters, but I’m not that familiar with the names, is anybody interested in it?

Seeing Edgar/Relm beat Locke/Terra is absolutely priceless.

Don't believe that Quistis got voted so low. Oh man that sucks.

Sandyboots Cloud x Tifa is more popular than Cloud x Aerith.

I love Sabin and I wish he scored higher! But yeah, those seem like the general census when FFVI came out. I also liked Locke but I loved Sabin because of his Blitz technique, and he was just a cool character.

And their is no way to measure which is more popular with Cloud/Aeris or Cloud/Tifa. The fandom on that is sick... and scary. *Shudders*

I like the addition of best scene, by the way. I've always been a very plot-driven gamer: it's definitely my favorite part. And everyone knows that FFVI had its share of good moments. I would like to see a similar poll for FFVIII, which I also thought had a higher than average amount of exciting/touching moments.

There is a lot in common and a bunch of differences with the Japanese fandom. While characters like Locke and Laguna get love in both sides, the sweet girl Rinoa is the favorite there while Quistis is more popular here. The canon Locke/Celes and Cecil/Rosa are accepted worldwide and in the other hand the Japanese love their lolicon (Edgar/Relm) while we think: ewww, pedo.

I know there’s bound to be hell whenever Cloud pairings are discussed, so I mentioned it half-joking half-tryingtobeevil, but I’m glad it didn’t work, this community is really nice.

I adore Sabin heart.gif, but honestly I expected him to be lower, so I’m happy with his placement.

It’s funny, the site jumps from November 96 to July 99. I bet there are more polls like this for the other games. The transcripts in here come from a FF6 fansite, so no surprise in there, the only odd one is the FF8 character poll.

All I gotta say is that this is the worst list I've ever seen. No way in Hell is Locke on the top of all FF characters (should've been Kain, you know Dragoons kick so much ass when you see one), and Relm on that list is a disgrace.

LOL PEDOPHILE.

One wouldn't be surprised that Mr. Emo Leonhart actually made it to No.1 of the Stupidest Characters From the game FFVIII, but why is Selphie up there in all honesty? She bugs me a ton with her *cute* and *silly* dialogues when I play the game.
