Kefka is original, insane, and does the things he does for kicks. As a bonus, he succeeds in actually causing the coveted end-of-the-world.

Sephiroth is your stereotypical angsty pretty-boy, logical enough to actually have a reason for what he does, and does the things he does in order to get revenge on the world for what they did to his "mother" and his "race". Unfortunately, he falls short of causing the end-of-the-world. Perhaps his only positive quality is that he has a cool sword. And legions of obsessive fanboys/fangirls.

Who wins? Kefka.

My vote goes for Kefka, because even though both villains had grandoise evil plans, Kefka has personal characteristics that Sephiroth doesn't have.

For one, in addition to being evil, Kefka is truly mean-spirited. Would Sephiroth have laughed as he poisoned a city's water supply? Sephiroth seemed content to carry out his evil plans in (relative) obscurity. Kefka really got his jollies by making people miserable. He probably could have killed everyone left in the world if he had wanted, but he amused himself by burning villages and making the world all but uninhabitable. To Sephiroth, you're insignificant; to Kefka, you're fit to be tortured.

Second, Kefka semi-reaches his goal. He accumulates enough Magicite to remake himself as the most powerful being in the world. That, to me, is a testament to his ruthlessness. Actually, Sephiroth's goal was pretty unnecessary. You want to get enough Lifestream together to make yourself a god, but you fell into the Lifestream 5 years ago and have been there ever since. What more do you want?

Actually, if you look at it, Kefka and Sephiroth aren't that different. Both were "engineered" to become superhumans and started off as soldiers. Both had plans to make themselves all-powerful by harnessing a greater power. Both appear as winged beings for the final showdown. Both try and manipulate your characters (Celes and Cloud) at several points throughout the game.

Sephiroth has only one thing over Kefka. "One Winged Angel" licks "Dancing Mad", and that's it. FF7 blows, FF6 rules.

Kefka's a clown. He loses automatically for being a clown.

Now the unbiased explanation:
Kefka has no regard for life. This pretty much makes him X-death from FF5 - Let's destroy everything because I can, and kill anyone who argues with it.

Sephiroth, on the other hand wanted to destroy this planet to use it as a tool, because we're losers, and he wanted to visit some other cooler world, and take that one over. That's galactic dominance.

In all honesty, were both to have succeeded, Seph probably would have travelled to FFVI's world next, and pwned Kefka on arrival.

So to summarize:
Kefka's a f***ing clown. Clowns are bad the way pedophiles are bad, nobody likes them, and people just want them to stop existing.

Sepiroth is on another level, very righteous. Unjust treatment due to flawed righteousness is worth fighting for.

Kefka, hands down.

He laughs while mass-murdering, he takes those who wish to live as zombie-slaves (which I think is more evil than outright destruction; wouldn't you be more mentally broken if he had turned your loved ones into his servants, who attack you, rather than outright killing them?), he perverts the entire planet (laughing the entire time), and when he gets bored of it all, then he decides that he wants to destroy everything.

And during all this, he laughs the entire time.

Sephiroth is still a decent villain, but he is simply doing what he thinks is best for the planet (in his warped, emo, mama's-boy mind). Hell, he would describe himself as a hero, if you asked him.

Oh, and as far as the Charles Manson quote posted earlier on this thread, he technically didn't kill anyone--he had his hippie cult murder for him (they thought he was Jesus after doing all that dope, I've heard...or something similar).

I think Sephiroth, i think his plans a better one which will make him more powerful than Kefka was with his little statues, seph would own whole planets powers.

Besides Sephiroth comes back from the dead, Kefka doesn't and probably wont, hows Kefka meant to kill him if he keeps coming back? biggrin.gif

And my final point, Sephiroth can do supernova which has got to more damage than anything Kefka has.

In the end, it boils down to two simple choices. Either you do or you don't.

I enjoyed FF6 and FF7 the same, though I say Kefka was awesome, mostly because at the end he hung out with some nympho demon chicks eh.gif Even if he looked like that actor Allen Cummings, I still think he's coo... unsure.gif

Sephiroth, I mean remember the nebelheim flashback in kalm? You see just how powerful sephiroth is when nothing affects him it all does 0 damage and he seems like a giant compared to poor kid cloud who can't do hardly anything to those monsters. Not only that but sephiroth had a cool sword and he was highly intelligent the only person able to wield a huge sword named the masamune come on that is cool eh o.O I liked the way he killed aeris too *evil laugh* I never really liked aeris all that much, tifa has bigger cups.

Some commentary here; major spoilers within if you consider them to be such.

I think which villain you prefer is based on whether you want to hate the villain.

Sephiroth is hard to hate, at least hard to truly hate. Sure, he tried to destroy the planet, like every other villain, but it's not because he's directly evil, it's because Shinra and Hojo so badly screwed up his mind and his perception of the world. I can't help but feel sorry for him.

Kefka, on the other hand, attracts strong hatred toward him better than rotting matter attracting flies. The only way you can even barely excuse him is to suppose he wasn't insane before his mind got screwed with, but even then, he sided with he evil empire. Not hard to hate him at all.

If you enjoy a plot that has easily definable good and evil (or at least easily definable ultimate evil), you'll probably favor Kefka. If you enjoy a plot that doesn't clearly delineate good and evil, with ethically muddy characterization, you'll find Sephiroth to be more your type.

So that's my theory. What do y'all think?

Edit
Oh, and Rarthyr, if only they had better graphics on the SNES with which to explicitly depict Kefka murdering people and burning towns...

That, and that's the wrongest reason to favor Tifa over Aeris.

I probably posted here some time ago, but I don't care to check tongue.gif

Kefka makes me tremble. For one thing it's because I'm mortally afraid of clowns and he's the scariest clown with the freakiest laugh I've ever seen and/or heard. He laughs while he inflicts pain, both mental and physical and didn't destroy the world when he had the chance only because he had more fun tormenting everybody. Someone, please kill him.

Sephiroth on the other hand is one half genetically burdened, other half mentally scarred. He was well described in AC, and here I quote (IIRC):
Quote
Shinra did him wrong, and he started hating them. He went on to hate everybody and in the he just hated.

He wanted to gain ultimate power either not knowing or not caring about the consequences. Also, even though Aeris annoyed me through the entirety of her screen time, my reaction when he killed her was "WTF have you done, you gods-damn bastard!?!? How could you!?"

It would be hard for me to say which one of the two I perfer as a villain, since they both had their merits...blah...dunno.

Still, Seph's cameos annoy me greatly...why him?!?

Kefka was an amazing villain and brought a writhing maniacal element to Final Fantasy VI. I mean sure Sephiroth is "badass" but he's a bit cliche. Kefka was absolutely insane and was a fascinating character.

So they are both kind of the same, yes? Engineered supervillains, bringing about the end of the world, and playing second fiddle to the totalitarian regime in the first act. Both are VERY iconic, very recognizable, and have their own kind of "cool".

So why do I give the win to Kefka?

I'll start with some quotes and explain them

"In my veins courses the blood of the ancients... I am one of the rightful heirs to this planet!"
-Seph

"I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate you!"
-Kef

Think of it in terms of "best villain". Sephiroth wants to rule the world, yes. He is sleek, and has awesome fighting skillz, and is NOT a coward like Kefka, and he looks like a badass when he's a-killin'.Point in fact, he kind of competes with Cloud (and Vincent) for "I have a dangerous weapon and I have some emotions and I am looking out over this scenic valley" points.

Kefka, now. Kefka does not compete with the heroes. He is not LIKE them. He is a coward, and he is insane, and he dresses like a clown. People dismiss him as just crazy to their doom, because there is some kind of a fendish mind and personality operating underneath it. The man causes havok everywhere- and doesn't take it or himself seriously. He is the creepiest villain in the FF series, for my dollar, because of the joking part of his personality. Somehow, it's just not as creepy to watch Seph kill or destroy. Seph has this calm, pseudoreligious thing going on. His mood MATCHES what he's doing.

See, when Seph does something that's important to the plot, he looks like he takes it seriously. He is driven towards a goal- Kefka is just there for the party, destroying and killing for the fun of it.

This is a man who, when seizing ultimate power, screams "Run! Run! Or you're be well done!" He is becoming a god and he makes plays on words. Seph is more like "Only death awaits you all, but do not fear. For is it through death that a new spirit energy is born. Soon, you will live again as a part of me."

Kefka kills the EMPEROR. Does he look all angsty about it? No, he just dumps him over the edge and moves on.

People have said Kefka is a killer clown- I have to disagree. More like a Joker. And remember, in FFVI, Joker Doom means the end of everything.
