I said Yuffie because I never found her, Although I really hated Cait Sith. The only party I really used was Cloud, Tifa, and Barret.

I think it should be Yuffie. Unanimously! But that won't happen with all the Cait hate!

Yeah he's annoying and he is sort of a double crosser, but without him the crew would've been lost. He was their gate to Shinra. Like someone already said they wouldn't have known about the Sister Ray being moved to Midgar. Plus they retrieved the black materia with his help (he sacrificed his stuffed body! Come on! tongue.gif).

Not that the last point mattered, but anywho...

I like all of the characters. I used to dislike some, but right now the only one I can never really get into is Vincent. I even prefer Yuffie and Cait Sith over Vincent. It's because his limit sucks.

I'll vote for Yuffie though because she is "pointless", however I do enjoy her storyline and I think she's pretty cool.

Aerith. Useless to a horrible penalty, and she's good for one disc, one disc only, minor overused plot device, gets way to much credit for simply being murderer. Words of the creators themselves. Let's not argue with SE.

Aerith was useless in battle. As a mage she had potential but what level are you at when she dies? 30 at most? If you trained and grinded like hell? Her limits? Overrated and good for nothing. Her last is far to hard to acheive without the help of either a guide, knowledge from an expert, or being an expert yourself, and her ultimate weapon is the most annoying to get in the game.

She was worthless as a character. Good as a cheesy plot device, but all the other characters far outstagged the poor girl. I truly pity the character that is Aerith.

Even Yuffie could have filled her role better.

That's not the right question it should be who is the most useless
character. That is Cait Sith i use it only to gain his limit break.Vincent doesn't add very to the plot but he is awesome.Yuffie is annoying but she
has The Conformer which make 9999 with morph materia and that make
easy to max your stats in Gelnika.Barret ,Cloud and Cid has the best limit
breaks to beat bosses.Aerith is very usefull too.Tifa and Nanaki not much
but they are cool.

Could NOT agree with you more. i just went and snagged yuffie on D3 just so i would have all the characters. gonna go do the Wutai 2nd "Quest" (if you wanna call it that)

hehehe...Cait Sith ive NEVER used playin the game. the only thing i havent really dabbeled into was the Morphing. and i know its an ENORMOUS part of getting good items. Honestly its my first complete playthough not being a B!%^$ and using a gameshark ( i bought the psp version from the store biggrin.gif) my 2nd playthough im gonna go caitsith and Tifa lol. lets see how that one plays out.
Eww i think i typed too much for my first post here ( lovin this site too btw. very very nice my friends.) dont hate on meeeee.

i was considering a null vote because youre right painreaver... everyone did add some kind of element of their own kind to the game but barret is still virtually worthless... he does add the token Mr. T moments in the game though... those were occasionally funny... if you could read what the majority of it said

Maxed Barret + ungurmax + herodrink = 25-35k + (give or take) stick cover of him and stack his HP and he lights sheeeeee!t up. especially on a single target, ive downed many a bosses with just one of those combos listen above. and i play it on the pspizzle now. no cheaty for me ( cant homebrew tongue.gif )

Oh and LOL! Cid is the #$(&#@%@)(&* king my friends biggrin.gif

i'd have to say Tifa
aside from Midgar ( and u HAVE to use her here ), she is totally useless. her limit breaks are crappy and u get her final weapon and limit break 4 so much later in the game. she is just not a good fighter. or at least, i didn't use her.
and.. Cait Sith. jezz. doesn't have a high hp atacck, and he's not even funny. and his limit break 2 can kill your party. not good.

btw, I totally disagree with the one's that said tha yuffie suck. I mean, she has good limit breaks, best morpher, the fastest, doesn't affect mp/hp in her attack, and she doesnt do damage to ur party when is in abnormal status like confu. I used her a lot.

The only thing that never made sense to me was: why would the Shinra want the Tiny Bronco? They had the High-Wind, the Tiny Bronco, even working as it should be (remember that you used a wrecked Tiny Bronco) wouldn't be more useful than the High-Wind.

It's explained in the game that the airship required preperations and it's explained at junon.

There's the obvious Vincent and Yuffie issue as they're only optional characters, but they have their reasons for being there. If you're one who likes to follow chronologically, you'll find that Vincent was useful after all in FFVII. I mean, I got annoyed when nothing more was explained about
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Chaos and Lucrecia
, so Dirge Of Cerberus did that very well and expanded Vincent.
As for Yuffie, I think she was just a comic relief character what with the airsickness and going dibs on your materia. But she does explain a little about the Wutai situation, and it was said before, yes, a little like post WW2 Japan.

And I voted for Aerith because, well, she did have her central role to the story but she was too much like a damsel in distress for me. The first time
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
I saw her death
I was shocked like veryone else, but that's really all she was there to do. Couldn't someone else have taken her place? Like Tifa. We can afford to lose her.
Sorry to those Tifa shippers out there.

O.k. just to keep my self safe this all goes in to a spolier box as there are a few large spoliers

right strictly speaking if you take the game as that the characters aren't replaceable so can only stay or go this is essentially the way it works (give or take a few errors)

cloud is the main protagonist remove him and the game ends before it begins

without tifa the game would be missing everything after the life stream eruption at mideel

without barret the game would possibly never start as he's the driving force behind avalanche

with out cait sith the game ends somewhere around the start of the huge materia quests

without nanaki the game ends shortly after aeris got captured by the turks

with out aeris he game ends... near the end really but results in meteor hitting the planet and sephiroth wins

no cid means the game ends around rocket town due to no tiny bronco... or no shinra having the highwind for that matter

no vincent causes mulitple holes in the story before ff7 begins reguardless of how little he's involved with the actuall game

no yuffie causes... o.k. this just doesn't change much... no 4th trine?

to those who wish to stay away from a large amount of text (nicely spaced for your ease however) the gist of it is yuffie wins the most useless character to the plot award (dispite being awesome as a fighter in battles biggrin.gif )

Parivir, I like your list, but I must disagree that Vincent's role in the pre-story is relevant to the question. He could just as well have been an NPC like the other Turks and served the same purpose. As a member of your part, he doesn't contribute anything. At least when Yuffie is in your party, she triggers the whole Wutai side-arc. I'm not saying I don't like Vincent, I'm just saying the game could have gone without him as a member of your party (Maybe he could have been an interesting boss even).

Yeah I can see what you mean but in all honesty both vincent and yuffie could be removed from the game and the it would still work just fine. You don't even have to get them in the first place.

There was a tiny bit of bias in that list I'll admit simply due to my hatred of yuffie XD

Also loving how no-one has voted for Cid yet. Cid ftw!

In my most recent playthrough, I have a L60 Aerith in my party. Fury Brand is handy for levelling other character's limits, and Planet Protector was crucial to crossing the marsh on foot.

I think you need to re-evaluate your definition of 'grind like hell'. tongue.gif

Cait Sith is by far the character I have the least amount of love or use for, but Vincent is probably the character with the least amount of impact on the story...he's the wild card that doesn't need to be in the deck, but is great to have in your hand anyway.

Vincent gets my vote.

I see I've put the first vote in for Cid. I think it would have been a better game for me without Cid in it at all.

Regarding the piloting tasks, it's an RPG cliche that the main character is proficient in driving or piloting whatever vehicle you come across, so Cloud can fly the Bronco and the Highwind and the rocket into space. I don't think the game needed an example of a man that relates to the most significant woman in his life by yelling and swearing at her all the time, even if he sort of realizes he was wrong about her during the space mission. It's still a pretty lousy apology for everything else that happened.

I think due to the fact that the player has no obligation to discover Yuffie or Vincent, i'd choose Cait Sith. Annoying and didnt really have a story other than to steal the keystone...

I guess he was helpful at the temple of the ancients though

Precisely, the game tells us that they are optional, thus it can do without them.

Dispite that, I must say that Barret is pointless, he doesn't seem to add nothing to the drama, to the plot, except in the beggining, but a generic leader (or even Tiffa) could“ve done the job.

I don't like most of the playable chars, but they all have their importance, except for Barret, as stated above. Cid does'nt haave much motivation, but he does the badass role much better than Barret, so he stays.

foamy: As useful as Aeris may be being level 60+ on disk one it doesnt really enhance the game as-

1 You dont need to be anywhere near that level to progress
2 Monsters/bosses etc dont give you nearly enough exp to make level grinding beyond 45-50 worth it- just advance to later in the game and the same time spent will get you to 99.

A couple of hours with fury status and quick battles and you can get everyone their level three limits, at around level 30 (or before if you fight really weak opponents).

Besides if you are insanely levelled there is very little need for a healer- a single limit or a few rounds of physical attacks and even most bosses are defeated (especially on disk one). Healing can be done between battles.

So i still think Aeris wasnt helpful from a battling point of view. As far as the story goes of course she is essential, but that doesnt mean she ever needs to be willingly put into your party.

For beginners who probably dont understand the gameplay as well, a healer like Aeris is very important, but once you've played it a few times i think she just becomes a waste of one of your two others player choices.

Yuffie. She was just annoying and she was kind of there to explain the grudge from the Wutai War, but that was easily explained from past history and the village itself. And did I mention that she was annoying ? And rude ? and selfish ?

Cait Sith comes second place though.
