I could swear that there is a topic about this already, but I just can't find it. Nonetheless, the idea here is to share your top film of 2008.
It looked like Batman was going to be my favorite this year. Probably for the same reasons as everybody else who liked it. But, out of the blue, Waltz with Bashir swam out from the Haunted Ocean just before the end of the year. In short, it's an animated documentary about the director and his interviewees' memories of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 19**. I don't think I'll see a film so powerful again. It has one of the most harrowing and beautiful soundtracks ever to grace a war film. The animation, probably the biggest lure for me, is used perfectly to bring out the flashbacks and dreams (the dreams are especially amazing) without being too overbearing. I.E. you never feel like it's a cartoon for the sake of being a cartoon. The interviews never feel slow, and since most of them are realised anyway, the film never loses it's pace. The final scene is one that I'll never forget. The people I know always talk about that scene first after seeing the film. Let me tell you, it's very clever but very simple at the same time, and it's a real shock to watch. This is now firmly in my top 5 films of all time. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

One of the major disadvantages of having the internet whilst living in BFE, is you hear about all these awesome movies like Waltz or Let the Right One In, but you only get to see the hollywood studio movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. It's downright infuriating I gotta wait till the DVD's come out before I can release my frustration by stealing the bastards off the internet!

My three favorite movies of the year were all pretty mainstream - The Dark Knight, WALL-E, and Frost/Nixon. All three were absolutely fantastic. I still really, really want to see Waltz with Bashir, Milk, and The Wrestler, though.

Dark Knight it easily my favorite film of 08. I was pleasantly surprised by Slumdog Millionaire......great story. Other than those too, I loved Wall-E and Saw V.

Wall-E, hands down. FIrst movie I've paid to see in theaters twice in ages. There's still a few movies I want to see that are out right now (Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino) but Wall-E is not just my favorite Pixar movie, but is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time.

i suppose Dark Knight. In Bruges (i think that came out in 2008) was pretty good too. As far as Wall-E goes, i actually hated that movie. It just didnt have that Pixar feel to it, that being said, The Incredibles is still my favorite Pixar movie.

I'll throw my hat in the bandwagon and say that Dark Knight was by far my favorite/the best film of 08. Iron Mand and Gran Torino would also rank up there, and I also
![]() ![]() I'm also with NP, I'm really interested in a few of these obscure foreign films, particularly Let the Right One In (suck it, Twilight!). Gonna be a fun Oscar year for sure. I'm rooting for Rourke and Eastwood all the way. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again? I can't really pick one, because I haven't seen The Wrestler or Slumdog yet. I will have to go with the Dark Knight. Mainly because Ledger's performance was truly legendary, but also because the movie surprised me. I had written off superhero movies. Most of them are generic. But this movie was very well done.
Another film I'm going to pick is a small diamond in the rough called The Visitor. Richard Jenkins is great in it. It's a really wonderful film that I suggest everyone who hasn't seen it to watch. -------------------- |

Yeah Wall-E wins it. I still need to see Slumdog Millionare, Milk, and the Visitor, but I hardly bet they can top a movie that gave me chills the entire time.
Other favorites (epics/dramas) include the Dark Knight, Speed Racer, Indiana Jones, Synechdoche New York, Frost/Nixon, and Cloverfield. As far as comedies go it was also a really great year, Hamlet 2 probably being my favorite. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Smart, Be Kind Rewind, and Zack and Miri were also very good comedies. Disappointing movies of the year (all of which were still very impressive) include Quantam of Solace, Iron Man, and Burn After Reading. -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. I forgot about Burn After Reading. That was hysterical. The Coens are amazing.

Dark Knight gets my vote as well, and yes, a lot of that has to do with the late Heath Ledger's immortal performance as one of the greatest comic book heroes of all time!
I wanna' see Milk, that one seems like a great movie and I heard a lot of positive things about Sean Penn's work in that one as well. Frost/Nixon looks like another one to on my list of movies to see. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Not until I fulfill my dream!"
