Remember when Celes takes the "Leap of Faith"? she ends up in the ocean and starts talking to a bird, asking it: " Why did you nurse me back to health? Did I ever ask you to help me?"
i'm confused, but what's going on here!? -------------------- I've had an eternity to ponder the meaning of things....and now I have an answer!! |

Quote (Rangers51 @ 20th December 2008 20:56) She's not asking the bird that. She's asking rhetorical questions to Cid's spirit. I never thought about it that way...I thought that Celes definitely knew that she wasn't going to survive the jump, so when she woke up, she figured that somebody had to have helped her out. I don't think that was Locke (I know that bird has his headband, but it would be difficult to go from the island to Phoenix Cave) but somebody else. If those questions were aimed towards Cid, wouldn't she have asked them right after he died or while he was still alive? -------------------- "All roads are connected somehow. I don't think so, because she was distraught after his death. She felt guilt because she couldn't save him, and he saved her. I know that it's a game, and you're supposed to play it, but him dying works better storywise, IMO. -------------------- |

I think she's basically saying she would have been better off dead.
that's until she saw the wounded bird and saw locke's bandana around it -------------------- I've had an eternity to ponder the meaning of things....and now I have an answer!! |

That too. She feels guilty, she's suicidal. It's really easy to understand that she's talking to a bird or a dead guy. -------------------- |

I just played that part of the game, and I must say, it makes a whole lot more sense to interpret it like Celes is addressing Cid.
In the next part, where she says, "Hey you! Where'd you get this [bandana]?! Is the person who healed you still alive? Answer me!" she's more clearly talking to the bird, who must have been hurt, and Locke was kind enough to bandage it up. -------------------- |

Numerous parts in the game, birds are used to send and receive messages. Does Celes actually expect the bird to talk? Do the birds speak? Edit OK, maybe it's not a question. Just a thought. Hmmm. I never thought about it as a rhetorical question toward Cid. I always just assumed she was going a bit insane (as the assumption at that point is that she's all alone, no other person alive in the whole world). Of course, seeing that bandanna then makes her realize that she's NOT alone...

Reminds me of the movie, "Cast Away". If Tom Hanks being alone can cause him to talk to a volleyball, then Celes talking to a living bird doesn't seem that out of the question.

Do the birds speak? They are probably carrier pigeons who have little papers with messages tied to their legs. Which I think is so cool to train a bird to do that. Or are they called "honing pigeons"? -------------------- |

Carrier pigeons sounds right to me. Who knew that the disease-infested flying rats of the world could be so useful?
