Does anyone use Chocobo mounts in mid-late game? Recently I've been thinking it would be really cool just to send in Ramza and Agrias (I heart Agrias) and give them a chocobo each to ride. (and probably leave the 5th slot empty)
I think it would add more challenge to the game, by only having the two chars in a fight, and if it does get really rough, I can always dismount and use the birds seperately. But the big problem is, that if I am riding the chocobos all the time, they wont get a chance to level, so if I did dismount in an emergency, they would be weak... Anyway, while I think about doing this, I was wondering if anyone else has already been there, and what they found. Was it worth it? |

I personally found the mechanic of riding Chocobos to be a novelty and little else - I really didn't use it at all during the game, at any point. The reasons you bring up are pretty good reasons why not to bother, but I agree there is a lot of appeal to the kind of epic nature of riding a mount into battle. Of course, you can't do that in FFT, you have to mount the chocobo after the battle begins, thus wasting a turn; that as well really messes with the idea to me.

I used chocobos as mounts extensively on my last playthrough (about 5 months or so ago) to increase the difficulty. As most people have realized, after a certain point in the game the difficulty level drops to about nil with the addition of the various 'death from above' knights.
So, I tried the chocobo idea with Ramza and Orlandu/Agrias. The only time I had to restart was the random 5 million Hydra battle at Bariaus Hill. As was stated it's not viable as a long term strategy, but is fun when other options have been exhausted. |

I like riding chocobos in battle, especially black ones for their flying skill. Covering long distances and using move skills is a win/win for me. It also looks cool

There is a challenge on Gamefaqs where it's Ramza and a generic girl and two chocobos.
I use them on a few forced battles with lots of water (the river one with all the chocobos comes to mind), but other than that not really. I actually usually kill Boco so he stops making babies. |

Quote (yelanates @ 12th December 2008 23:47) There is a challenge on Gamefaqs where it's Ramza and a generic girl and two chocobos. I was actually going to mention that challenge, though my recollection of it was that it was Ramza and another character (no gender restrictions), with one of each of the three chocobo colours. Additionally, you had to select two classes; Ramza had to be one of the two, with his secondary skillset being from the other class, and the other character had to primarily be the other class, with his secondary skillset being from Ramza's class. That said, I'm probably remembering one of the more extreme variants of the challenge you mentioned. >_> |

For all the reasons previously mentioned (I'm looking at you, wasted first turn and lack of exp gains) I never use Chocobos. They're more of a liability than anything else.

I got and raised some Chocobos early in the game (Mostly for the red one), and used them for a bit. The red was useful in the beginning, but otherwise they were pretty pointless. I can't imagine how annoying it would be later in the game..

I love riding chocobos -- generally in the early chapters -- but as said, it comes off as a novelty instead of great battle strategy. If there was a way to enter battle already mounted (I believe Suikoden Tactics has this feature) instead of having to waste a turn and unit for the cause, then it might be more useful.
