In another classic Firefox Community gimmick, SpreadFirefox is looking to set a Guinness World Record for most downloads of a software package in a single day, when Firefox 3 Final is released sometime this month. They're trying to guesstimate how many downloads this is going to be by collecting pledges right now.
To make Tiddles happy, I've pleged, and on Download Day I will use the SpreadFirefox button at the bottom of pages on the main site to grab it for all four of my running PCs (or possibly the link below, since that seems to be their preference). You can do it too: I should note that this record has never been set before, so they could pretty much claim it even if only one person downloaded it. But where's the fun in that? I got it on one PC so far, too, and it does actually seem faster than I'd expected. And my extensions more or less all worked, too! A bit surprised by that, as I heard the API to extend FF3 was more complex.

I'm breaking mine in right now, seems like my web browser is going to have to learn how to walk in order to run, but it seems to work alright.

Got it just in time. Say, you don't have to install it for it to count, right? I want to, just...later. XD;

Got it like 10 hours ago. Eh.
None of my plugins work anymore, but that's not really that big of an issue. It's the suggestions when you type in the address bar. Example: Type 'goo' as in going to go to Google. It doesn't just bring up results from the begining of the URL, but rather anywhere in the URL or title page. 'goo' for instance brought up google, but also 'Good ol boy network' on Wikipedia, cause I checked it recently. I need to stop that, it annoys me, but it's probably a matter of fiddling with options. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. Yeah, I'll agree with you on that, Kylerocks, the new suggestor is a bit of a pain. I might give it a go to see if I get used to it, though.
It's funny, virtually all of my plugins worked, with only one I had to update manually. On this PC, which has the most plugins of any of my four, the only two that I don't have working yet are Long Titles and Verizon Minutes Used. I had to DL a beta of Chipmarks manually, but it works just fine now. All four of my PCs are running it now, and they all have slightly different plugin setups, but they all seem to be doing pretty okay. I feel compelled for some reason to point out something again that we've mentioned time and again here: we don't really care if Firefox isn't your thing. We as an administrative matter prefer Firefox among the crowd of browsers out there, but we don't expect you to use it; we merely want our users to consider alternatives to IE, and we just think Firefox is the best of those. It's certainly not Safari. ![]() You can still download FF3 for almost 12 hours and have it count towards the record - they appear to be at 3.8 million as I write this. Why I'm writing it at this godforsaken time is for another thread. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

No idea why they changed the address bar system at all, that's more annoying than helpful when there's no option to revert to the old way. Just like when Google started to be clever and think you made a typo and gave you results for the corrected "typo" as well...
I imagine on a totally fresh install it's spiffy, but with this one it's wiped everything I had in the old bar and typing in the url simply finds me, er, the last page from a site I visited rather than the must frequently visited like it used to. If there's not some fix to that somewhere I think I'll be downgrading somehow. It's far too clunky and cumbersome to me. Though the way it saves your tabs is nice. It even saved the message body I had typed here when I restarted from updating my FTP plugin Edit Yeah, this just will not do, I'm gonna need to get 2.0.1.4 again and hope there's some way to counter the fact history and the address bar are utterly scragged later on. There are extensions to revert to the old behaviour.
But yeah, I didn't think I'd say so, but you do get used to the odd new URLbar. I've had the advantage of six months or so to do so, and I think I even prefer it now. An option to revert would have been nice, though, because a lot of folks have been used to the old behaviour since IE5's release in the late nineties, and it's something that really did get on my nerves for the first month of using Firefox 3 at least (along with the new download manager, which reverts to teeny tiny buttons that I thought went away with the pre-1.0 extension manager). And the record is only for downloading. You don't HAVE to install it. ![]() |

Anyone who is as Waaah Waaah as I am about the AbominableBar and it's incomprehensible levels of genius and awesome that go so far off the scale they land in retarded and useless may be intrested in this addon:
It's like the old address bar when you type things in! I actually quite like the new address bar as it is. For example, I was looking for the newly-released Obama 'stop the smears' site that I had visited before, but all I could recall was the word 'smear'. Lo and behold, typing that into the bar found it for me. It certainly has its uses.

Yeah, as I say, you do get used to it. There's no point ranting and raving about how stupid it is before giving it a fair go.
![]() You'll also find it works better as you go along too, as it collects new data and learns how to behave. All those incomprehensible short strings you used to pull URLs from history gradually start working again. |

EPIC FAIL. The internets not wurk gud there. (IDK about that really, I just wanted to say something in intertard. ![]() I like the "OMG, how do you know what I'm thinking?!" bar. I haven't fully utilized it yet, as my google searchbar does the same thing, and I typically google things before I randomly start typing.
