I first remember reading about this game back in September of 2007 via cover article on a game informer. It caught my attention then and it intrigued me even more when Gearbox, the people who made the game, decided to change the games art completely giving it a totally new look.
You start off by having to choose one of four different character classes and then you're dropped off in one of Planet Pandora's many outposts. From there a little robot called Claptrap takes you to Dr. Zed who gives you the first of hundreds of different missions and your badass journey begins. Now, once you cross the entrance of Fyrestone, your first town, you will most likely be attacked by a group of Raiders or Skags, nasty four legged creatures that vomit things they can't digest, things such as guns, ammunition and money that used to belong to some Borderlander that wasn't very lucky. At first you are going to have to kill the lower level enemies, believe me you don't want to take on enemies that are five levels above you, you will be killed. Travel will be slow in the beginning, but as you progress vehicles and later on Teleport Stations will become available once certain missions are completed. Planet Pandora is one massive place, but not all of it is open for the player to explore. As you go on completing mission after mission you will meet new characters that will grant you access to other areas or quest that lead to more quest and so on, something the Grand Theft Auto fan might be familiar with. The story is the weak point and you can say it's the cherry the ice cream is missing, which is not a big deal, I mean if you give me ice cream without a cherry I'm still going to eat it, and in this case Borderlands is five scoops of cookies and cream. The weapons are ridiculous in that they come in so many different variations and shapes. Depending on what make a certain weapon is they will have a different feel from the same type of weapon made by another company, a DAHL Assault Riffle will not feel like a TORQUE Assault Riffle. Each weapon type has four different manufacturers. Some have less recoil while others have larger magazine sizes. Others give a boost to your melee damage while others might cause bullets to detonate upon impact. That's not all, you can also equip grenade modifications to change the behavior of grenades. For example, if you equip Rubber Grenades your grenades will bounce around like a basketball, Impact Grenades, well they detonate after touching an enemy or yourself, and my personal favorite, Transfusion Grenades, all the damage cause to the enemy will be transfer to your character as health. Borderlands is overall a good game that becomes great when you play with 3 other players at the same time via the multiplayer, or you can call your buddy to do some split screening. This game should score no less than 7.2 and no more than 9.0. -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |

I've really enjoyed Borderlands so far, and I feel the best way to sum it up is Diablo + Fallout + FPS. Since you have the arid, post-apocalyptic look of fallout, combined with the class development and quest hunting of Diablo and the twitch-style FPS gameplay of most common FPS', you've got a pretty solid game. However, if you're looking for an RPG "shooter" like Mass Effect or KOTOR, then you'd best look elsewhere since this does rely on some Halo/CoD-ish skills.
All in all, I really like how the game has progressed, and I'm constantly entertained by the ridiculous amount of pop-culture references (ex. "My Brother is an Italian Plumber" achievement) as well as the Adam Baldwin cameo. The quests are fun, though slowly become a bit of rinse-repeat since there's so many, you have to figure they'll eventually overlap. It's a vague step-up from Diablo where, largely, the only quests were plot driven, whereas this sends you off on others to gain goodies and exp and monies. However, the upshot to solely plot-driven quests is they're not repetitive and meaningful. Thankfully, the game doesn't require you do every quest, but it does help in exp. building, so you'll likely end up doing most of them anyways. Another fun perk was the Challenges, where you get bonus exp. for doing various things like killing 500 humans, running over 1000 creatures with your ride or getting 2000 crits, which just adds another fun element to quest after. Basically, though, if you wanted to play Hellgate: London as they promised it would be, then play this game, since it's what Hellgate: London should have been. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Borderlands sounds like fun to me; might consider picking this up for Christmas. I've heard good about it.
