Anyone else think that the two dots on his hat were his eyes and the slit for his eyes was his mouth? Like two years ago, I was playing the GBA version and realised ''Oh! He has a yellow shawl on!''

![]() Yeah, for the longest time I thought the eye-slit was its mouth and it was some sort of horrible monster with puffy hair and a big, toothy grin. I still have a hard time not seeing that - I default to Terrible Tooth Monster in my head. I also thought that right above the teeth was a really awkward 13-year old mexi-moustache, which just made it an awkward monster going through puberty. You know, I don't think I've ever seen a close-up image of Gogo before, so I haven't really seen his eyes. I guess I thought he was a weird monster too.

Heh, can't say I imagined him like that. Maybe because my first playthrough of FFVI was on the GBA? =/

I've always seen the eyes and such but with everyone telling me about the monsterous aspects now I can't stop seeing them

Hahaha, oh add me to the list of folks who first thought Gogo was a creepy blob of a person. I never used him/her because of the "creepy grin."
![]() What is with this game and bizarre hats? What is Gogo wearing on his/her head? Kinda reminds me of the bright green pointy-hat-thing that Owzer wears. -------------------- I figured I had paid my debt to society by paying my overdue fines at the McLennan County Library. Its supposed to be late-Victorian. From a Japanese perspective. It happens.

I sorta just notice like a year ago that Gogo wasn't an alien or good monster, but just suffered from bad fashion since.

For the longest time I also thought Gogo was some sort of strange yellow-and-red creature. In fact, it wasn't until

Wow you guys, Gogo looks so lovable with his big toothy grin!
![]() To switch gears, I'd also like to caution against over-simplified ideas about how well the Japanese understand Western culture. If FF6 adhered closely to Victorian/Edwardian fashion, the gents would dress like this and the ladies would dress like this. With exceptions for opera Celes and reunion Gau they don't. Instead they mostly follow the conventions of RPG character design of the day. Which is not to say that there aren't people in Japan who do their homework on the Victorian period. Mamoru Oshii has proven very familliar with it. A show called Victorian Romance Emma speaks for itself pretty well, right? Even Amano has done his homework on Victoriana. He knows what late 19th century Europe looked like. He just wasn't using it so much on the character designs for FF6, and nobody else on the game's staff seems to have been very interested. (BTW, that last pic was stills from Angel's Egg, circa 1985.) This post has been edited by Shiva Indis on 1st October 2009 18:50 -------------------- "Cavefish is delicious, but only if cooked." |

Wow and to think I felt bad when I saw Gogo's art by Amano and went: “What the hell!?, It is not a monster with a creepy grin?!!!â€
I'm not alone after all ![]() The Advance version did some minor changes to the portraits but it really helped Gogo's case, I don't get confused anymore. I always thought his design was more arab looking than western. Oh well, we'll always have FFV's Gogo for creepiness sake. http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/ff5/art/images/47.jpg -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |
