out and about on my travels, i find my little characters occasionally fall subject to sleep spells. this itself doesn't bother me: i make them run everywhere, they deserve a break. what confuses and befuddles me is that if they are not woken by me or the enemy, a little animal comes along and gives them a little kiss and they wake up!
i think it looks like a tapir.... but then a goat.... and once i thought it slightly resembled my auntie helen... BUT what i want to know is, does anyone know what the HELL it is???? -------------------- The Lemon of the Open Spoon awaits you at the Altar of The Chocolate Drum, in a world of Missed Calls, Deleted Messages, Late Buses and Cremated Toast "Due to budgetary concerns, the light at the end of the tunnel has been temporarily shut down" |

Moving to FF6 forum, not General Gaming. And it is a Tapir, as it says on the screen before it appears.

That's a fair point, I don't think it does tell you when it randomly occurs. I was confusing it with Mog's dance that brings it in, where it does say the name.
Unless I'm still confused. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

It comes in only in the middle of a battle, when your character don't "wake up" from the sleep status. It just appears.
I understand that wikipedia's not the greatest place to do research, but a bit of research yielded this piece of information: Quote Japanese, the tapir is named after a beast from Chinese mythology. A feature of this mythical creature is a snout like that of an elephant. In Japanese cartooning (manga and anime) tapirs can eat people's dreams. -------------------- |

so its supposed to be there? ok! you learn something new about tapirs everyday!
see, the name doesn't come up on the screen when it happens to me: just a little tapir wavers in and wavers out. first time i thought i was dreaming.... or halucinating.... life would be easier if it told you about the sleep-tapir in the little book that come with the game ... ![]() -------------------- The Lemon of the Open Spoon awaits you at the Altar of The Chocolate Drum, in a world of Missed Calls, Deleted Messages, Late Buses and Cremated Toast "Due to budgetary concerns, the light at the end of the tunnel has been temporarily shut down" |

Btw, I have seen pictures of tapirs before, just haven't put the two together. But now I gotta go into battle and force my guys asleep to see it. The Tapir first appeard for me during Cyan's dream (I hate that area) when I hadn't waken, I think, Sabin (could have been Celes or Edgar though) up... I thought it was a glitch or something. glad to know it wasn't.

The dream-eating animal in question here is called a baku (bah-koo). See here for an explanation by Professor Wikipedia.
This is a case of the word for a mythic creature being the same as a word used for a creature that actually exists. Another example is the kirin, which is a kind of unicorn-like beast (if you've had a Kirin beer, the creature on the label). The word for this animal in Japanese, 麒麟, is also used to refer to the giraffe. My suspicion here is that it's translated Tapir not because, say, Woolsey initially messed up (the man has an MA in Japanese Literature, after all, and had this at the time of his work on VI), but because the concept of a baku eating nightmares and releasing people from them wasn't something that would translate well without an extensive footnote. Incidentally, I've long thought that the little sound effect that plays when the Tapir wakes you up sounds, if you use your imagination, like the word baku. But that may just be me. Anyhow...the more you knooooow! ![]() ![]() EDIT: Pre-coffee typos! ><; This post has been edited by ChickenFriedChocobo on 14th June 2014 16:30 -------------------- This is a signature.
