Quote (Amido @ 21st September 2003 02:40) Deja Vú (Nes) Yeah! That game rules! Shadowgate and Uninvited rock too! They really succeeded with the music in those games. Although it's only NES 8-bit, those games are well-scary. I remember when I played Shadowgate and Deja Vu the first time, I was only about 9 years old (and NES graphics were still hot and a technical masterpiece at that time). Those games almost made me faint sometimes. Such as, Possible spoilers: highlight to view (In Deja Vu): The first time I finally managed to unlock the door in the first building, and once I stepped inside the room I saw a dead man lying on the desk, while psychadelic terror music burst out of the speakers. Eew! It still makes me shiver! ![]() ![]() -------------------- People say I'm a slow learner, but I type fast! |

I've neglected posting in this topic, for some reason or another. I guess I'll do it now. Anything outside of the first two tend to change weekly, if not daily, according to my moods.
RPGs: 1. Chrono Trigger (SNES) 2. Legend of Zelda (NES, SNES, N64, GC) 3. Earthbound (SNES) 4. Lunar: SSSC and EB (SS, PS) 5. Suikoden (PS, PS2) Other: 1. Capcom vs. SNK 2 (PS2) 2. Mario (NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, N64, GC, etc.) 3. Metal Gear Solid (PS, PS2) 4. Soul Calibur (DC, GC, PS2) 5. Starfox (SNES, N64) By the way, I don't count Starfox Adventures, which I consider a terrible concept that should die. ![]() I should probably put in the Mega Man series, too. Man, I love Mega Man, though I have my gripes with the X and Zero spin-offs. I'm just curious, on a fourm devoted to Square, what are some of your favorite non-Sqaure RPG?
As for me, I'd have to say Tales of Destiny. I really liked the story, especially when you Possible spoilers: highlight to view , the battle system is really unique (no, I haven't played Tales of Phantaisa yet), and the music and graphics were really well done. The sequel could've used work though thought the game was over, and you found out you were only 1/3 of the way through ![]() So, what's your favorite? Obviously, Enix games count, including any they had in the works before the merger. (My apologies if this has been done before, I searched the forums and didn't really see anything, sooooo...) Hasn't this been done before? Whatever. My answer is Skies of Arcadia, no question. SoA was released in 2000 for the Dreamcast by a division of Sega called Overworks (who made several of the Phantasy Star games) to strong critical acclaim and remarkable success for a Dreamcast game. The setting and atmosphere of the game were top-notch, with colorful, incredibly detailed locales and dungeons, and the most beautiful world map ever to be experienced in an RPG. There are only six playable characters, but those six are some of the most endearing, hilarious, and well-developed characters you'll find anywhere. Vyse is a great traditional hero, Aika is the best tomboy heroine I've ever encountered, and Gilder, for all of his Bond-like womanizing and savoir-faire, is one of my favorite RPG characters ever. The story, while starting out somewhat simple, is very rich and enjoyable, centering on the ideas of exploration, discovery, and friendship; very innocent but tremendously fun. The battle system is a classic turn-based one, combining special attacks and magic attacks with a Spirit system that really creates a need to strategize how one uses the limits of your SP meter, providing for some very tricky boss battles. As for extras and sidequests, you can always try and locate the game's 64 (89 in the GC Legends edition) hidden discoveries, recruit all 20 crew members for your airship, defeat the pirate bounties (Legends only), and uncover the past of the mysterious assassin Piastol (also Legends only). You need to play this game. When I played it for the first time four years ago on my Dreamcast, it was an RPG experience more fun than any other since I had first obtained FF VI and Chrono Trigger for my SNES. If you have a Dreamcast or Gamecube, your are doing yourself a disservice by not playing this game.
Honorable mentions go to Fire Emblem: Rekka No Ken, Tales of Phantasia, and Grandia, for various reasons. -------------------- |

The Phantasy Star series for the storylines, characters, and battle mechanics. Phantasy Star (Master System) is THE game (seconded by Phantasy Star II) that is solely responsible for turning me into an RPG fanatic. The Diablo series is another great one that I LOVE playing.

Probably System Shock 2, it being the best game in history. Baldurs Gate is up there, and the Zelda series if you are being generous with the term RPG (Link to the Past, Oririna, and Majora's Mask being favorites). Maybe not that generous, it's a stretch calling the newer Final Fantasy's 'RPGs' over 'Action Adventure', but, what does it matter.

Non-Square game? Tough call. I don't know who made it, I think it is Enix, but Robotrek is one of my all-time favorite RPGs. Easy as it is, it has still provided countless hours of entertainment. Nothing beats beating the hell out of whatever you can find using a robot with 99 guard, 99 speed, 99 charge, two Shield 5's, Boots 5, and a Bomb 4 Lv.9. Yes, I vanquished the entire game using that set-up as soon as I could. I didn't take damage once, I don't think.
![]() Tales of Phantasia is certainly a close second. I know there are other favorites that I can't think of right now. -------------------- Is PJ |
