It seems that AOL's e-mail people have half a brain cell between them, and can't operate a mail system to save their miserable lives. I say this because validation e-mails often seem not to reach @aol.com accounts.
If you want to register and have any other e-mail address, you should register using that by preference. As an absolute last resort, if you can only use your AOL e-mail address and your subscription e-mail doesn't ever come through, e-mail me from the same address you subscribed with and I'll manually activate your account. You should also make sure that options to block e-mail from outside AOL are off. Why AOL offers such a stupid option is beyond me. This post has been edited by Tiddles on 9th September 2003 11:43 |

A lot of people block email from outside of AOL and allow certain other addresses that the know are safe to avoid getting spam. People like my parents, who only email their friends, like that system because they aren't harassed as much. On the other hand, AOL has so many ways to meet other AOL members (chats, message boards, etc.) that it makes sense to be able to explicitly allow all AOL users...if you use those kinds of services. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Ah, I could argue why AOL and its insularity option is still rubbish until I'm blue in the face (surely, in light of its dwindling membership, everyone has at least one friend who doesn't have an AOL address now...? Plus, I receive more spam from internal AOL users on my AOL address, which is never published, than from the net as a whole on my public addresses which are on some sites), but we probably wouldn't convince each other of anything, so I'll close the topic lest further replies divert attention from the important advice for potential AOL-using members.
Still, if there's an option to allow specific addresses, and you do still want to block out most of the known Universe and speak only with others who've been equally fooled into thinking AOL's still a credible ISP, and you still want to register here, please open the floodgates to [email protected]. Doing the same for tiddles@ and rangers51@ on the same domain would probably help too, because I just can't remember what address is used for what.
