Where did the names "World of Ruin" and "World of Balance" come from? I prefer saying "after the end of the world". Was it a fan name that stuck? Or something from the original SNES game? I did search this and have a look on the FFVI section, but not in any great detail to be honest.

Two things to bear in mind:
1 - I haven't beaten Kefka at his tower yet. I'm just wading through the puzzles and secrets for now. There's been so many great twists that I'd hate for something to be spoiled!
2 - I'm playing the American PSX version that a legend of a game shop owner ordered in for me.

I'm not 100% certain why they decided to call it that, but I do know that the map that came with the American SNES version of the game was two-sided and had one side labeled "World of Balance" and the other labeled "World of Ruin." I had no idea what they meant until the world got ruined, so to speak. I assume that's what they're called, but I dunno anything about a "more-official" source calling them anything other than those two names.

I don't have the original box or the original strategy guide, it may have come from one of those. But I do know that balance and ruin are mentioned in the dialogue.

The Wikipedia article makes it sound like it's entirely fan creation, but I'm not sure.

As laszlow said, it is labeled like that in the game. It's like that in the bestiary, too, so it's pretty much an official term.

I'm quite sure they don't use the exact terms World of Ruin and World of Balance in the game's dialogue. (It sort of does irk me when I somebody says "World of Ruin" in fanfiction. It still is the same world, you know.) However, it is highly convenient for fans to just say "WoR" or "WoB" instead of typing it out like "after the Goddes Statues (Warring Triad) was put out of alignment by Kefka".

Yeah, but the beastiary is in the Adv. version. I think I've seen that map, so it may be an official term, or Square just adopted it.

I've never touched the Advanced version, but there's a bestiary in the PS version. That's what I meant, the bestiary is like that in the PS version, too. I've seen it with my own two eyes.

If the terms were only in FFVIA, then it's more likely that Square got it from fans, because they've been using it for years. There's no bonus content in the SNES version, so I bet the terms come from around the time of the PS Anthology version.

Sorry, I just assumed the Adv. for some reason, I've seen it on that version now that I remember.

If you have a picture of the map, will you post it?

Edit
Actually, I found these two pictures.

WoB

WoR

Are those the SNES Maps?

Yes, but that is an edited version.

Those maps are unaltered, as memory serves.

I just noticed they said "FFVI" instead of III.

I knew I've seen those maps before. If those are unaltered then Square came up with WoB and WoR, which is what I've always suspected.
