Two, Speed Burner is just a cool-sounding name, and cooler = more popular. mmx2 wasnt all that great. are you sure you arent thinking of mm 2? Look... don't try to insinuate that I'm mixing up my Mega Man games, kiddo. Just don't. MMX2 is a very good game; not as great as MM2, but still a very good game. Now, now, let's not derail this thread with a discussion on who likes what Mega Man games. For the record, I don't really like MM2 or MMX2 that much, nor MM7.
Though if I were to pick my second choice, that would be Flame Man's weapon from Mega Man 6 (also a game I enjoyed)--Flame Blast (2). Which actually might have made a difference--dividing my score by 2 would have given me 48, more (or, technically, "less") than enough to win, in fact, despite picking Ramza. Alrighty, thanks to a bizarre scheduling quirk, I have nine days in between my first exam (earlier this morning) and my second exam (a week from Thursday), so I'll get the ball rolling a little bit early.
For the next round of Rare Entries, the prompts will be written by ALL OF YOU. Yeah, that's right. I want all of you to send me different prompt ideas for the next round. Round 4 is eventually going to be eight prompts, with four from games that CoN covers and four from general gaming trivia. A good prompt has three qualties: A) it's something at least vaguely familiar and appealing to most gamers, B) it has between 8 and ~20 possible answers that aren't too hard to research, and C) it isn't overloaded with limiting conditions. Look through the prompts used so far and take note on which ones had positive comments from me and which ones had negative comments to get an idea of what works and what doesn't. So here's the story: in between now and Monday, May 5th, send me as many prompt ideas as you want, either to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com or via PM. If you send it by email, tell me your forum name so I can credit you if one of your submissions ends up being used. One prompt out of the eight will be written by me and I'm saving another prompt slot for our reigning champion Silver_Zombie, but the other six prompts will be from the rest of the CoN community. Sometime next week I'll post the eight prompts for R4 and we'll start this up again. Now send me some prompt ideas! OK, I don't have nearly enough submissions to do a real one, so unless I get some more in the next two days, I'm going to go with ones written by only myself and Silver_Zombie.. Get to it, people!

Well, I have plenty of prompts now, but most people forgot one thing - half of them need to relate to CoN or games that CoN covers. For that reason, only four people other than myself and Silver_Zombie got prompts that made it into this round. If there is a round five, I might try another way of finding prompts. We'll see.
But enough of that, let's play! You know the rules - eight prompts, eight answers, send them in to either epicpoet AT gmail DOT com or to myself via PM. You have until the morning of Monday, 12 May to do this, which gives you just under a week. If the number of entrants exceeds 28 (minimum 29), then the winner gets a prize. Round four's prompts were written by laszlow, Silver_Zombie, Neal, Ganolink, Wizwurm, and SilverMaduin. The Prompts: 1. Name a weapon for Barret in Final Fantasy VII 2. Name a defense attorney or a prosecutor from one of the first four of the Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) video games* 3. Name one of the Elemental Fiends/Lords from Final Fantasy I or Final Fantasy IV 4. Name one of the elemental spirits from Secret of Mana** 5. Name a Caves of Narshe account with over 2000 posts 6. Name a starter Pokemon available to the protagonist in any of the main-series Pokemon video games*** 7. Name an effect spell (gray magic) from Final Fantasy VI 8. Name a member of Organization XIII in the Kingdom Hearts series Notes: *Use the names from the American Nintendo DS versions of the games. **In the research site below, each page has seven of the eight possible selections. Remember, I'm asking for elemental spirits, not magic spells. ***A "main-series" game refers to any game set in Johto, Kanto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh. Recommended research sites: Caves of Narshe Starter Pokemon Ace Attorney attorneys Secret of Mana magic More Secret of Mana magic Organization XIII -------------------- |

For clarification, these are the eight possible answers to prompt #3:
Lich Kraken Marilith Tiamat Scarmiglione Cagnazzo Barbariccia Rubicante If you use one of the older translated names (e.g. Kary or Milon), then that's fine, I'll just change them to the most modern version of the name. I've done that for all the previous Rare Entries games. The same rule applies if I receive an answer of Wisp, Djinn, etc. for prompt #4. -------------------- |

OK, I only have 12 responses to Rare Entries this time, and that isn't enough - I'd like at least 20. I'm extending the deadline another two days, so now you have until Wednesday morning to send in responses. If you have any questions or comments, then please just PM or send it to my email address.
P.S. Sig poll, just like the last two summers. -------------------- |

Yes, I'm going to start them today. I've been unexpectedly busy the last three days, so I've been a little bit delinquent about finishing them. I only had maybe 14 or 15 entries though, so this is going to be the last Rare Entries game.

Well, first, an anecdote. I take part in series of Rare Entries games that has been running since the late 1990s; I got second in the most recent game, and only because I had two illegal answers (my scores on the ten prompts were five 1s, two 2s, one 3, and two illegal entries). I'm a little bitter about it. Surprisingly, we also had a number of illegal entries in our own game. But I digress. Let's all congratulate Glenn Magus Harvey for his victory in what will likely be the final rare entries game, who won with a super-low score after being thwarted by Ramza to win second place a few weeks ago.
Glenn Magus Harvey's answers 1. Cannon Ball (1) 2. Miles Edgeworth (2) 3. Rubicante (2) 4. Shade (1) 5. Glenn Magus Harvey (1) 6. Bulbasaur (3) 7. Quick (1) 8. Xemnas (1) Final Score: 12 Second Place: Neal (36) Third Place: dont chocobos rule? (96) Fourth Place: laszlow (108) The mean score was about 2884 and the median score was 153. That high mean score was due to those aforementioned illegal entries. 1. Name a weapon for Barret in Final Fantasy VII Decent distribution, helped by the low turnout and high number of possible answers. Distribution: Chainsaw (2) Heavy Vulcan (2) Atomic Scissors (2) Missing Score (1) Enemy Launcher (1) Assault Gun (1) Microlaser (1) Pile Banger (1) AM Cannon (1) W Machine Gun (1) Gatling Gun (1) Cannon Ball (1) Shotgun (illegal entry, weapon for Vincent) 2. Name a defense attorney or a prosecutor from one of the first four of the Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) video games* More good distributions, for the same reason as last time. Two minor traps at Winston Payne and Franziska Von Karma. Distribution: Franziska Von Karma (3) Winston Payne (3) Kristoph Gavin (2) Miles Edgeworth (2) Phoenix Wright (2) Godot (1) Mia Fey (1) Gregory Edgeworth (1) Manfred Von Karma (1) 3. Name one of the Elemental Fiends/Lords from Final Fantasy I or Final Fantasy IV The low number of possible answers for prompts #3, 4, and 5 drove up the scores a little, which makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Also, Kraken went unchosen. Distribution: Lich (3) Barbariccia / Valvalis (3) Cagnazzao / Kainazzo (2) Marilith / Kary (2) Rubicante / Rubicant (2) Scarmiglione / Milon (2) Tiamat (1) (congratulations, FBM) Calbrena (illegal entry, not an Elemental Fiend) 4. Name one of the elemental spirits from Secret of Mana** Not much to say here. All eight were chosen at least once, but people seem to overwhelmingly prefer the four "traditional" elements. Distribution: Salamando (4) Gnome (3) Undine (3) Sylphid (2) Shade (1) Lumina (1) Luna (1) Dryad (1) 5. Name a Caves of Narshe account with over 2000 posts Nobody chose Rangers51 or Elena99. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Distribution: Hamedo (4) Dark Paladin (3) laszlow (2) (I was one of these) Climhazzard (2) Silverlance (2) Neal (1) (not Neal) Glenn Magus Harvey (1) (the winner) Rubicant (illegal entry, only 599 posts) 6. Name a starter Pokemon available to the protagonist in any of the main-series Pokemon video games*** Thirteen possible answers here, but only eight of them were submitted. Surprisingly, Grass was the most popular type by a large margin (nine entries, four choices) and Water was the least popular (two entries, four choices). Distribution: Bulbasaur (3) Chikorita (3) Turtwig (3) Cyndaquil (2) Torchic (2) Squirtle (1) Pikachu (1) Totodile (1) 7. Name an effect spell (gray magic) from Final Fantasy VI Ridiculous distribution here. I blame myself, as I wrote this prompt and it has twenty-one possible choices. Whoops. Distribution: Slow2 (2) Rasp (2) Haste (1) Haste2(1) Imp (1) Osmose (1) Dispel (1) Slow (1) Float (1) Vanish (1) Sleep (1) Warp (1) Quick (1) Drain (illegal entry, black magic) 8. Name a member of Organization XIII in the Kingdom Hearts series Unsurprisingly, this prompt had thirteen possible choices. Perhaps also unsurprisingly, four of them went unchosen. Distribution: Demyx (3) Zexion (3) Marluxia (2) Saix (2) Luxord (2) Lexaeus (1) Xaldin (1) Axel (1) Xemnas (1) So that's all. The turnout was disappointing, so this will be the last rare entries game. I'm sorry for getting it out so late, but I've been busy traveling between my friends' graduations and generally celebrating the end of the schoolyear. So until next time: work hard, but game on. -------------------- |

That was totally not supposed to work.
Then again, if we had more players, the results might have been different. But yay answering with myself, lol. 1. Cannon Ball (first thing I thought of, for some reason) 2. Miles Edgeworth 3. Rubicant 4. Shade 5. yours truly 6. Bulbasaur (my favorite pokémon) 7. Quick (I totally expected lots of people to choose this one) 8. Xemnas (I totally didn't know any of the Org. XIII characters) This post has been edited by Glenn Magus Harvey on 17th May 2008 06:27 -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. 1. Enemy Launcher (1)
2. Gregory Edgeworth (1) 3. Calbrena (illegal entry) 4. Gnome (3) 5. Hamedo (4) 6. Turtwig (3) 7. Osmose (1) 8. Marluxia (2) The second prompt was written by me and it was kind of tricky, because the wikipedia page only listed some prosecutors/defense attorneys in proper sections. Mia Fey, for example, was listed in the Fey family section and Gregory Edgeworth and Lana Skye were mentioned only in descriptions of other characters. Let alone Robert Hammond, a defense attorney who was a victim in one of the cases, not mentioned at all on the Wikipedia page. And I mistook Calbrena for Barbariccia, I fail. Well, I wouldn't have any winning chances anyway. Congrats, GMH. -------------------- You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one... |
