Man, i got a few perfects, so im pretty happy...

1 Washington Redskins (5)
2 Piscodemon (2)
3 Nameless Dance (2)
4 Draculas curse (3)
5 Shot Pistol (3)
6 Nikeah (4)
7 Naked (1)
8 Quina (1)

I put Quina, because it states that she is female on multiple sites i found, including the one given. I really bombed with Tecmo Bowl, since ive barely played it, so wasnt familiar with popular teams, and i also seem to have, like Laz mentioned after game 1, chosen the dracula title least heard of and it was one of the more popuiar choices. I sort of randomly chose the fear effect weapon as a guess, and Nikeah seemed to be strangely popular, but i was right on for a few of them...Yesss!

Totally in for another round!!

I think I did alright this time round:

1. Minnesota (1) Solely for their reference in the first Pokemon movie...
2. Chaos (2)
3. Last Dance (2)
4. Order of Shadows (2)
5. Arc Taser (3)
6. Narshe (I think...) (2)
7. Black (2)
8. Terra (though I'm not sure. I might have gone for Freya...) (3)

288.

%£&$! I knew I should have gone for Yuna on that last one. Again, I should really trust my instincts.
A lot of 2s there though, which are nice. I'm game for another round.

I specifically picked Kohlingen because looking back on it last time I was the only one to pick it. Ugh. I also regret not picking my Bears over Cleveland.

There seems to be at least a medium amount of interest, so I guess I'll run another round once I hear back from FallingHeart. Dunno when that'll be.

Alright, time for round three. Once again, if we exceed the number of entrants this round (that’s 28 or greater), then we’ll have a prize. Otherwise, it’s only for honor, and honor without money sucks, so get as many participants as possible! We’re starting a little late this time, so I will accept all entries submitted BEFORE midnight on Sunday, April 12th, after which I’ll score the entries and post the results on Monday afternoon. Send in your entries to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com, or just send them via PM. If you have any questions about the rules, the prompts, or anything else, feel free to send it through a PM . But that’s enough chit-chat, onward to the game!

The Prompts:

(odd-numbered prompts written by FallingHeart, even-numbered prompts written by laszlow)

1. Name a weapon from Jak 3

2. Name a character from Final Fantasy VI that can equip the Paladin Shield

3. Name one of the useable masks in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

4. Name a weapon from a Mega Man (classic series) or Mega Man X game that involves fire or heat

5. Name one of the units from the Fort Condor minigame in Final Fantasy VII (both ally and enemy units count)

6. Name one of the unique (non-generic) playable characters in Final Fantasy Tactics that is controllable in the game’s final storyline battle

7. Name a playable character from Soul Calibur 2, not including console-exclusive characters**

8. Name a sword found in the SNES and PS1 versions of Final Fantasy IV***

*Boco does not count, because he does not have a unique class; any of the other eleven in CoN’s list of “playable characters” is fine. No PSP-only characters.

**This excludes Heihachi, Link, Spawn, and Necrid (Necrid is consoles-only). Any of the other characters are fine, including the three “blanks”.

**No GBA-only swords allowed

Recommended Research Sites:
Caves of Narshe
Jak 3 weapons
Majora’s Mask masks
Mega Man resource website
Soul Calibur II Characters

That's all I got, so good luck!

OK, right now, with about nine hours left to submit answers, I have eleven submissions. Eleven. That's just terrible. I'm extending the deadline two days, so I'll keep accepting submissions until Tuesday night at midnight, and I'll post the results Wednesday evening after my field lab work. Come on, people. Eleven?

Well, we had 21 entries, which is a pretty good number, but I think now it's time for a Rare Entries break. I have final exams, research papers, and a backlog of lab reports breathing down my neck, so Rare Entries is going to take a hiatus until that mess is finished. However, enough talk of that, we should all recognize Silver_Zombie and congratulate him on his winning entry:

Silver_Zombie's Answers

1. Blaster (4)
2. Mog (1)
3. Bunny Hood (5)
4. Flame Blast (1)
5. Fighter (2)
6. Malak (1)
7. Yoshimitsu (2)
8. Slumber (1)
Final Score: 80

Second Place: Glenn Magus Harvey (96)
Third Place: Sherick (120)
Fourth Place: Gears (128)

The median score was 576 and the mean score was about 1902. You'll see why there's such a disparity once you read about prompt #6....

1. Name a weapon from Jak 3

This distribution was pretty reasonable, with only a single four out of ten. The only other possible perfects were the Mass Inverter and the Vulcan Fury.

Blaster (4)
Peace Maker (3)
Plasmite RPG (3)
Arc Wielder (2)
Scatter Gun (2)
Super Nova (2)
Gyro Burster (2)
Needle Lazer (1)
Beam Reflexor (1)
Wave Concussor (1)

2. Name a character from Final Fantasy VI that can equip the Paladin Shield

This was a tricky category - all fourteen main characters in FF VI other than Umaro were possible answers. No one picked Strago, Sabin, Shadow, or Setzer. No love for the letter S....

Cyan (5)
Relm (3)
Locke (3)
Gau (2)
Terra (2)
Gogo (2)
Edgar (1)
Mog (1)
Celes (1)
Leo (illegal entry)

3. Name one of the usable masks in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Other than the popular Bunny Hood, distribution in this category was great. I blame Super Smash Bros. I'm sure that some masks were missed, but meh.

Bunny Hood (5)
Circus Leader's Mask (2)
Bremen's Mask (2)
Fierce Deity's Mask (2)
Garo's Mask (2)
Postman's Hat (1)
Giant Mask (1)
All-Nighter Mask (1)
Keaton Mask (1)
Kamaro's Mask (1)
Mask of Truth (1)
Deku Mask (1)
Kafei's Mask (1)

4. Name a weapon from a Mega Man (classic series) or Mega Man X game that involves fire or heat

OK, I thought I was being generous on this category. By my original count, there were fourteen possible choices; this jumped up to twenty possible choices after I realized that in the context of the question weapons for Zero or Axl in X4-X8 could also apply. However, only one person picked up on the Zero angle and most people stuck to weapons from the earlier games in both series. Several people tried to submit Napalm Bomb or other explosive-type weapons, but I didn't count those for fear of the number of possible entries jumping up to numbers beyond the number of players (which is a bad idea). Ah well, the distribution is actually pretty good, and honestly it makes me feel like playing some vintage Blue Bomber.

Speed Burner (4)
Fire Storm (3)
Fire Wave (3)
Atomic Fire (2)
Wave Burner (2)
Melt Creeper (2)
Scorch Wheel (1)
Quake Blazer (1)
Flame Sword (1)
Flame Blast (1)
Circle Blaze (1)

5. Name one of the units from the Fort Condor minigame in Final Fantasy VII (both ally and enemy units count).

A fair mix of entries here. Sixteen possible entries, eleven chosen.

Tristoner (4)
Repairer (4)
Beast (3)
Worker (2)
Fighter (2)
Attacker (1)
Stoner (1)
Shooter (1)
Wyvern (1)
Catapault (1)
Defender (1)

6. Name one of the unique (non-generic) playable characters in Final Fantasy Tactics that is controllable in the game’s final storyline battle

This was the most problematic category of all. I even explained in the prompt list that there were eleven possible entries and how one would go about finding them, but to no avail. If you picked Ramza, then your bracket was boned like a Final Four of Georgetown, Duke, UConn, and Drake. This distribution was awful. The only characters left unchosen were Agrias and Meliadoul, but damn.

Ramza (8)
Reis (4)
Worker 8 (2)
Mustadio (2)
Orlandu (1)
Byblos (1)
Beowulf (1)
Rafa (1)
Malak (1)

7. Name a playable character from Soul Calibur 2, not including console-exclusive characters**

Decent distribution on this one. There were 22 possible entries, which is more than I like, but it worked out. Still, with so many, you'd think there'd be lower scores....

Kilik (4)
Maxi (3)
Raphael (2)
Xianghua (2)
Sophitia (2)
Yoshimitsu (2)
Ivy (1)
Charade (1)
Yun-Seong (1)
Nightmare (1)
Astaroth (1)
Cassandra (1)

8. Name a sword found in the SNES and PS1 versions of Final Fantasy IV***

Solid distribution here. I wasn't clear what exactly constitutes a "sword," so I decided to allow katanas as acceptable answers. Nevertheless, the distro turned out fine.

Excalibur (4)
Darkness (3)
Avenger (2)
Fire Sword / Fire Brand (2)
Black (2)
Silver (2)
Defender (1)
Blood / Drain Sword (1)
Medusa / Gorgon Sword (1)
Sleep Blade / Slumber (1)
Crystal / Ragnarok (1)
Long / Kotetsu (1)

So that's that. There won't be any more Rare-Entries until mid-May at the earliest, and when we do get them I'll be making a few changes to the formula. But for now, discuss the round, offer congrats to Caesar, and whine about Ramza.

EDIT: fixed the Leo thing

Scatter Gun (2)
Gogo (2)
Keaton Mask (1)
Fire Storm (3)
Shooter (1)
Worker 8 (2)
Maxi (3)
Excalibur (4)

Wow. I was definitely not expecting to place in this round, let alone win. What a nice surprise! Who would've thunk Repairer and Kilik would have been such popular choices? Also, thanks for making the next round in May, Lasz. I have a real rough few weeks ahead of me but now I can finish up the year first. happy.gif

My friend and I were actually just playing through Majora's Mask this past week when I did it, and I forgot how truly awesome Giant's Mask was. Just throwing it out there. That mask rules. It's so good, in fact, you can only use it in one room in the entire game. Amazing!

Anyways, thanks again, lasz, for doing this. Can't wait to make some questions for the next round!

Hm. That is interesting. I do seem to remember his having Paladin shield because I remember trying to unequip it from him. It seems I was wrong, though. I am currently at the library and don't have access to my FFVI notes, but once I get back I'll check to see for sure who can equip the Paladin shield. If Leo isn't one of them, I suppose I'll have to forfeit my victory, although I don't think there was a monetary prize this round.

Hm... I can't find info about it at present, but I assumed it was true because I had no idea about it and in your (Caesar's) email you mentioned that he has one. Ah well, if you are disqualified that 1 would turn into a 20 and your score would turn into a 1280, making Silver_Zombie the winner.

128. That was my best round so far. Shouldn't have picked the Tristoner, I had a feeling that might be the obvious not-obvious choice.

Yay, I won ^^ And I wouldn't even manage to send my answers if it wasn't for the change of the deadline ;)

Even though there is no prize this time, thanks everyone for participating, I'm definitely up for another round in May ;)

1. Peace Maker (3): I also considered choosing Mass Inverter and Arc Wielder.

2. Celes (1): I thought it'd look good on her.

3. Mask of Truth (1): Cool name. I don't know the game though.

4. Speed Burner (4): I don't know why other people chose this, but I went with my quickest guess and I had the Flame Stag music in my head. Maybe people chose MMX2 because it's a rarely-discussed and not-very-highly-regarded game.

5. Catapult (1): I don't know why I chose this, but I don't know the game anyway.

6. Ramza (8): I was cursed here by my lack of FFT knowledge. I was about to choose Cid, heck. But considering I had no idea what characters actually could be playable in the final battle, I simply went with the most logical idea and picked the main character.

7. Cassandra (1): Don't know why I picked her. I've barely seen people play Soul Calibur before; I just went with a name that I recognized immediately.

8. Crystal (1): Yay! Cecil's coolest sword!

Score: 96
Place: 2nd

I did much better than I've ever done before. And I didn't actually try. Weird.

I can think of two reasons. One, I was under the impression that MMX2 is actually a highly popular Mega Man game with lots of respect among oldschoolers; this forum is full of oldschoolers. Two, Speed Burner is just a cool-sounding name, and cooler = more popular.
