so i finally have some disposable income coming in(not much, but some) and a friend of mine turned me onto this pretty good manga called Chibi Vampire. it's about a girl named Karin Maaka from a faimly of vampires. unlike the rest of her family, she doesn't suck blood. instead she injects blood into her victim. mostly it's about her dealing with her life as a vampire while balancing a school life, a part-time job, and all that good stuff.
anyway, i'm looking for any other good mangas. i've already got the Rurouni Kenshin and Trigun mangas ordered. if anyone here has some suggestions, i'd love to hear em. -------------------- moé in the streets, senpai in the sheets |

First and foremost, Death Note. Fantastic stuff. Other pure-golden include Great Teacher Onizuka (aka GTO, about a teacher of a class full of delinquents), Slam Dunk (about basketball), and 3x3 Eyes (a really trippy fantasy-type one).
If you want to go to a place where you can browse a ton of stuff, try www.onemanga.com. They have pretty much everything that isn't licensed by Tokyopop (so no GTO....). -------------------- |

I'm a big fan of anything by Yuu Watase. Most of her stuff is pretty shojo/magical girl comedy, but I think the stories have a pretty broad appeal in some cases. I think you'd like Fushigi Yuugi if you like Kenshin.
Fushigi Yuugi is the longest series she's done, and it's fabulous in every way. It's about a girl named Miaka who reads a book and gets sucked into it's ancient-China-fantasy world where she has to find seven celestial warriors and summon a god. It's hilarious, romantic, poignant... and the story has quite a few twists. (There's also Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden, which is sort of a sequel, but not in any sense that I can explain without spoiling part of the story. It's about a different girl in the same situation. This one is still on-going... only up to volume 5 or 6 and still being published.) I think there are 18. Ayashi no Ceres (Ceres: Celestial Legend is what it's been published as in English, I think) is also pretty good. It's based on the legend of the tennyo (celestial maiden) who came to Earth and was trapped there when a man stole her hagoromo (feathered robe), but it's set in modern times with a modern set of characters. It's pretty high on melodrama and sex, neither of which really appeal to me. It has a lot of volumes... maybe 12 or 18? I could go back to my library and see, but that's like two whole rooms away. Imadoki! is a cute five-volume romance about a girl named Tampopo who is accepted on scholarship at a prestigious high school, and her struggles to make friends. This isn't the kind of thing that ordinarily appeals to me, but it was well-done. Alice 19th is about a girl who uses 'lotus words' to do magic. This is actually my least favorite, as I think the characters are insipid and the story, predictable. Eight volumes, I think. Absolute Boyfriend is still being published in English (five out of six volumes are available now), and it's absolutely hysterical. It's about a girl who accidentally saddles herself with a 'perfect lover' android and agrees to do research for the tech company in order to pay for it. She has to deal with parents, friends, and the boy next door while trying to figure out how not to hurt the robot's feelings. This series is totally off-the-wall, and it really cracks me up. Like Imadoki!, though, it might be less enjoyable if you're not a girl. I've also read a lot of Love Hina, and I'd recommend that. It's about a boy who wants to get into Tokyo U because, when he was a small child, he and a little girl whose name he doesn't remember promised each other that they would attend together and get married. Unfortunately, he's a bit of an idiot, so while he keeps trying to get into college, he winds up managing a girl's dormitory... and the girls love to torment him. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

If you can find it I'd recommend Parasyte, it's a sci-fi/horror about aliens that take over the human race. I've only read the first two volumes, but it's one of the best I've read.
Fullmetal alchemist, is pretty awesome in manga form and still ongoing. It's a bit different and I find it a lot better than the anime. I don't read manga as much as I used to, so I can't think of any more right now. -------------------- "You know that feeling you get when you're on a merry go 'round, and you want to jump off to make the spinning stop, but you know it'll suck when you land? They translated Parasyte forever ago, they're re-translating it in the original right-to-left format... Yay! I also strongly recommend it.
With just some suggestions without in depth description.. some good series... Angelic Layer Chobits MARS Full Moon wo Sagashite Love Hina Cardcaptor Sakura Crimson Hero Tail of the Moon All of the above are Shoujo. I think the one I can suggest the most though is Basara. It's a war story about a girl who plays the role of her brother, the boy of legend against the Red King. They actually have finished translating this. Pet Shop of Horrors is also incredibly cool. I really can suggest more, but I don't have my three bookshelves of manga to help me right now... :/ -------------------- ..DDR..Maine.. ..Hikaroo-chan no Deviantart.. <Tiddles> And I love how people suggest "Why not call it my great name?????" when their name is clearly the worst thing ever. <Tiddles> "How about ; Mozilla Xplorer & Mozilla Xpress." <Tiddles> How about you die in a fire? |

Dragonball
Saiyuki Bleach Crayon Shin-chan (not a manga but still somewhat fitting) Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kingdoms) Neon Genesis Evangelion Fullmetal Alchemist Devil May Cry 3 xxxHOLiC Cowboy Bebop Hellsing (the anime is better) Gankutsuou Ikkitousen (Battle Vixens) Elfen Lied Samurai 7 (the original movie (1954) is excellent) Grenadier Boogiepop Phantom ...to name a few. Not all of these have manga counterparts, but the majority do. -------------------- HSUP B TCELES |

Berserk is really very graphic, but it's another really good series. Most of it is shrink wrapped in bookstores, if that tells you anything.
Here is Greenwood, Black Cat, Magic Knight Rayearth, Guru Guru Ponchan, Inubaka, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma, The Mermaid Saga (there's three I think), Tsubasa Chronicles... MY BRAIN MUSCLE! SHE HURTS!
that's quite a bit to choose from. as for what i'm looking for, i'm not exactly sure. Chibi Vampire is the first manga i've read and i'm pretty much hooked. it's got a lot of romance between Karin and Kenta and it's got plenty of comedy thrown in. the funniest are by far the author(Yuna Kagesaki)'s side notes throughout. but that's not to say i'm not looking for a good action or drama. i guess i'll start with what i know. and what i know is that i like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Rurouni Kenshin. ![]() -------------------- moé in the streets, senpai in the sheets |

Oooh, manga.
I've read quite a few during my teen years, and although I don't read that much now I do have quite the collection. And a few favorites as well. Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro: talk about graphic and story. I bought the first volume in 1995, back when it was the trend for french editors to just rip off the american translations (which meant a lot of Kaboom and Baboosh, and no kanjis... that was legendary). Gunnm brought so much to cyberpunk I don't know where to start. It had a female protagonist kicking the crap out of big male cyborgs, every character had his own unique story and set of secrets, and each volume took you to a new part of a deeply complex universe. And it's all in only 9 volumes. This a landmark in manga, close to Akira, which naturally leads me to... Akira / Domu by Kastuhiro Otomo: I'm grouping these two together, altthough I'm not sure if the later is that famous. Domu was the first manga I ever read (1991, baby, even before Dragon Ball), and I very much recommend reading it before starting up Akira. Both mangas explore the themes of childhood, powers, and ultimately the destruction of society by adults. While Akira envision these themes on a city/state scale, Domu managed to do it with just one building as setup. And of course, you can't pass up on watching Akira, which aired the same 1991 year in France. Clover / Tokyo Babylon, by Stuido Clamp: I may be a guy, but I know great manga when I see it, even if it's Shojo. Out of the many, many, many mangas created by Studio Clamp, these two are my favorites. Clover is more of an experience than a reading, with fascinating art and intricate story, leaving many unanswered questions; which is OK, since after reading it you're not sure you really want the definitive answers. As for Tokyo Babylon, once you realise that the story is not about a guy accepting that he's gay, you see it's an amazing manga, encompassing much of japanese insecurities, and building it up to one of the most powerful ending and epilogue I've ever read. Read it again or start it out right now, just to savour the last sentence and last drawing. GTO by Tohru Fujisawa: One of the funniest manga I've ever read, and also very serious on some stuff. A manga about fun, becoming an adult, and fun. Oh, and a bit of fun as well. Stay clear of the anime though, as it doesn't compare to the manga. Death Note by Takeshi Obata: man, what a surprise when I started this one. The "hero" makes JR and Jim Profit look like lowlife shoplifters. Changing the world by killing... just amazing. The duel in the first half of the manga is incredible, and although the second part doesn't compare to it, it's still a good read. Hikaru no Go: another Takeshi Obata manga, this one isn't so much about Go than being about life. You really get into the universe, even when you have no clue as to what the guys are doing ("OMG, a 3-2 Ogeima attack, I've never seen this move before!!!!!"). An example of setting being nowhere near as important as story and well written characters. City Hunter, by Tsukasa Hojo: LOL, just lol. And many more to come. For now, just look upon these tidbits ![]() |

I'm gonna go off the edge here a minute and recommend a rather risque' title, and say Angel Sanctuary.
I heard a reference to it being a very VERY strange manga, and had to inquire to why it's so off-base. out of 20 volumes, the first 3 revolve around developing a romantic relationship between a brother and a sister... which when put into to plot of about volumes 16-19, begins to make sense in a weird, sort of, "I'll let it pass" sort of way. The storyline beyond that relationship is really flippin' sweet tho. It revolves around a heiarchy of angels that have been corrupting for years, culminating at the beginning of the story with the unsealing of a highly powerful angel, sealed away because he was losing his mind, now free to "rule" as he becomes even more twisted and diluded. Interesting plot twists. Obscure idea for a story, and no anime has done it justice! They did a small series of the first 3 volumes, abridging massive parts of the plot, combined with terrible translations. It was SAD. ![]() The only way to fully appreciate it is in manga format, which has been kindly fan-translated as well as finally having an offical english version, which may now be available all the way through volume 20. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! I found a website where you can read a lot of different manga. Is it okay to post a link? I mean not paying to read manga is stealing right?.
Anyway to stay on topic I started reading 'Pretty face' it's about a guy who was in a car accident and ends up in a coma, his face looks like pizza from the accident in four months time the guy who finds him reconstructs his face from a picture of a girl in his wallet. It gets hilarious when he wakes and looks in the mirror and see's the girl he's in love with and who has a twin sister who just happens to have gone missing. I've read the fist two volumes, and it's pretty crazy. -------------------- "You know that feeling you get when you're on a merry go 'round, and you want to jump off to make the spinning stop, but you know it'll suck when you land?
