I've been doing a LLG of FF6a (on my cart not emulator, boy did I enjoy THAT decision) and missed the Cloud enemy in the phantom train. No big deal I thought, I can zap it in the soul shrine.

Now, 50 hours into the game about about to tackle Kefka's tower, I stop and think...does the soul shrine unlock formations on the Veldt?

I'd hate to think I'll have to do the whole dang game over to get perfect rage list because I forgot to double check I had one of THE most common monsters in the phantom train.

everything else I've seen personally, including ye olde grenade. Does anyone know if the soul shrine can still get me a formation on the Veldt or am I just boned?

The veldt works as you encounter more monsters, say if you fight "flan" elsewhere, it will appear on the veldt. So if you did fight one of those at some point, yes they will appear on the veldt.

In the Soul Shrine, can you fight any enemy in the game, or are there a few you can't encounter?

There are still some monsters that won't appear in the Soul Shrine.

Also, there are a couple of formations that only appear in the Soul Shrine. Death Warden and Gigantos x2 being the only ones I can think of.

I've done some personal research into the soulshrine and this is what I DO know.

There is a pre-set list of enemies you fight, however randomly instead of the set battle you may fight either a glutturn (one of three varieties with great steal items), or a random formation from the Dragon's Den. You can get a lot of the "missable" monsters in the Soul Shrine for the bestiary at least (things like the grenade, stillgoing ect.)

STobias made a great Soul Shrine FAQ

If you try to just muscle your way through without at least a bit of planning you'll be in trouble. He's a fun challenge, his element keeps changing as the battle progresses.

If you can't beat him damage wise though he DOES eventually barrier change through all of his forms to the final one where you have to do far less damage to kill him...disappointing to me. I enjoy tactical battling though so Kaiser was a blast.

Battling him in the soul shrine is a better challenge I think because you can't gear up exclusively for him.

Damaging him before his final Barrier Change is pretty much pointless, as you'll have to do a heck of a lot of damage in a short amount of time, while also keeping yourself alive. Much better to wait and focus on survival.
