What would they be called if they weren't called Final Fantasy?

Any of the earlier ones would probably be titled some like "Crystal Quest" or "Crystal Crusaders" since that was the basic idea of those games.

Final Fantasy 6 could be called the War of the Magi, after the historical reference in the game.

FF VII could be something like the "Lifestream Protectors."

FF VIII could be the "SeeD Wars."

FF X could be "The Farplane Chronicles"

FF X-2 could be "Girl Power: The Farplane Chronicles II"

FF XI could be "Generic Fantasy MMORPG Type I"

FF XII could be "The Sky Pirate Diaries"

I remember once for a Gamefaqs thing I came up with subtitles for several FF games.

FF IV: Dark Side of the Moon

FF V: Kingdoms and Crystals

FF VI: Secret of the Espers

FF X: Sin and the Summoner

I had more, but I can't find the old list.

The best I could come up with for the numbered games I actually have beaten 20 times over.

I like Farplane Chronicles for FFX and Dark Side of the Moon for FFIV.

For FFIX, something like "Return to the Fantasy" or something along the lines of returning.

I like "Dark Side of the Moon" for FFIV too.

For FFVII maybe "Jenova Impact" or "Jenova Effect"?

Well, I'll just make these up as I go along...

FFI: Crystal Crusade
FFII: Blades of Fynn
FFIII: Crystal Crusade II
FFIV: Songs of the Blue Night
FFV: Crystal Crusade III
FFVI: World of Ruin
FFVII: Project JENOVA
FFVIII: Squall of Time (Squall means storm, not referring to the char.)
FFIX: The Iifa Tree (Never played IX, is that what the thing is called?)
FFX: Dream of the Fayth

--------------------
FFIVDS looks awesome, right? Especially the character scans. I mean, look at that CGI scan of Yang. You see it and you just think...badass. And then you look at his polka-dot pants, likely stolen from a Dr. Seuss book. And then you just...shiver.

Has anyone actually looked at Squaresoft's previous naming system and wondered how that could be applied to the numbered series?

I'm not a fan of Advent Children, but the title itself is quite a feat. Not only is it marketable, but it's an abstract summary of the movie. It's not specifically referred to by anyone in the movie (avoiding the cheesy factor) and is a subtle hint at the challenge that the protagonists face.

Then look at FFXI, which was released in Japan with the subtext of "Visions of Zilart", and the expansions Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urhgan and Wings of the Goddess.

So what's with all these titles? War of the Magi? The Destruction of Sin? SeeD Wars? Where's the creativity? The spice? The marketability?

In other news, Sin and the Summoner and Blade of Redemption are ten different shades of awesome. >.>

They sound like episodes of Doctor Who IMO.

Bearing the above in mind I shall now use original thinking

I: The Motion Picture
II: The Wrath of Khan
III: The Search for Spock
IV: The One With The Whales.

...Wait.

Actually, yeah, let's stick with the Doctor Who titles. FF X-2 could be Voyage of the Damned, for example. FF7 could be the Dalek's Master Plan.

If Square was taken over by Chocobos, this would be the result:

FF 1- A Fight without a Chocobo
FF 2-Look, a Chocobo!
FF 3- The Black Chocobo Rises!
FF 4-The Black Chocobo Rises! 2
FF 5- The Black Chocobo Gets Invaded
FF 6- Techno Chocobo
FF 7- Multi Colored Chocobo's!
