The NES is the only game system I still own and play, and I have a thing for difficult games. I can attest to how hard Master Blaster is. You seem to be mostly interested in action games, though. That's understandable, as a turn based system where you just spend time leveling up on weak monsters in order to get through harder sections isn't really "difficult" in the same way. Some NES RPGs, however, were difficult in other ways. Legacy of the Wizard, for instance, is difficult because you have to keep track, and make sense, of a giant underground world.

Back in the days before my family had the internet, we considered Ultima III: Exodus to be unwinnable, simply because we had no clue what we were supposed to do. I decided one day that I would win it, and spent months mapping dungeons and writing down NPC dialogue. I even gave up for a few months, only to come back to it after my mom discovered my maps and asked if she could throw them away. It was a victory all of us kids shared (huge family) when we finally saw credits start to roll. That being said, you could probably win Ultima in a day with info from online (or perhaps a game manual... one of those would have been great).

Even so, Ultima pales in comparison to the NES Might and Magic, which gives you no clue whatsoever as to why you're there, what you're supposed to be doing, how to win, or even how to exit the first town. Even after discovering the internet, I spent years, on and off, playing that game, putting together clues, because I wanted to win without getting any hints from online. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can complete either game without a manual or the internet.

If you like either of those, consider playing Regressia:

It's an RPG I created that plays like an NES game. I made it specifically to challenge adult gamers, and to give people who like the NES something new to play. If you end up playing the game and like it, send me an private message and I'll give you a free subscription so you can play the entire thing.

Every NES Mega Man.

Also take a look at Demon's Souls on PS3.
And perhaps the Armored Core games.
