Let me preface this:

I have played FF7 through quite a few times - enough to think that I had seen it all. Clearly I was mistaken.

I just finished the fight with Materia Keeper. My party was Cloud, Tifa and Cait Sith. I started the fight as I usually do: by casting Bio and poisoning the thing. The only thing out of the ordinary was that I used Cait Sith's Limit, and he rolled a '7', doing 700 damage. The next 10 seconds were something of a blur: Materia Keeper hit Cait Sith for 7777 damage killing him instantly, and the Poison magic did it's damage which killed Materia Keeper. This was less than 30 seconds into what I consider to be a passably difficult boss fight. There is no way I knocked 8000 HP off of it in that time.

All that immediately came to mind was the "7777" trick that I've never gotten to work, but can enemies do that? Did I blink and miss something?

that does sound odd. There's no way he would do that much damage to you :x

It probably was a quincidence ( if i spelt that right : P). But your not alone. One Time while playing FF 6 i thought i had done 52000 damage! Turns out that the numbers fell at the same time. heh heh, that would of been sweet though : O.

Ahhh probly like someone said that the numbers fell at the same time.

For example when Supanova hits and you see like 920489579443 on the screen and you realise that its three health bars going down and not the entire party taking said amount of damage (or in my case its 'missmissmiss' cause of my 255 luck and mystile bangles)

The Lucky 7s trick happened. Yes, it can happen to enemies (Materia Keeper is the only one I've heard of it happeneing to though), and it causes everything he does to take off 7777 damage. And that means everything, including the damage done to himself via poison. Yep, that takes off 7777 too, killing him instantly, as occurred in your game. You got lucky.
