http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display.../02/05/netscape http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netscape I missed this story traveling last weekend, and since AOL has given Netscape one more month of real "life." That doesn't change the overall picture, though - the history of the Web as we know it will soon lose what was once a major player and remains a major part of Internet history. It should also be noted as a University of Illinois alumnus, someone who has actually been to (and interviewed with) NCSA, and someone who both makes a decent living off the Web and used Netscape as his very first web browser (NN3, baby), I'm really quite sad to see it go. Of course, the browser itself has long since been dead for all intents and purposes; the latest-and now last-version is really nothing more than Firefox 2 with a custom theme and a few add-ons. The theme was packaged up for Firefox users, and I must say that I'll probably install them just to give Netscape one final hurrah. I never liked it. My aunt and uncle use it to this day. I always hated it.

It's only really the death of the name. Mozilla was spun out of pre-AOL Netscape and that's where its spirit lives on in Firefox. The original browser division was quietly laid off in 2004 when AOL first killed Netscape and many of them went on to continue working with Mozilla.
Firefox is essentially the browser that the better Netscape engineers wanted to make, but couldn't get support for, from a parent company that wouldn't gain from popup blocking and wanted to push its own Web portal more than anything else. |

I remember actually going to the store and buying Netscape which was before they went to the all free version.

I use firefox passionately, and if it what the original netscape folks wanted, then I support them. However the interface in Netscape was just so unappealing, pass.
