Well Hell's Bells why do I even bother...  It's my own dambed version of a Cool but Useless Topic.

I went to the movies to see Phone Booth and unfortunately arrived early enough to see the commercials bay area theatres have recently decided to put in front of the usual trailers.  After a horrible 'go army' commercial, I was treated to a Toyota commercial advertising its Camry.  Now by all accounts I should've been annoyed and angry at this intrusion to my movie going experience, but I found myself loving every minute of the commercial--and it was a long commercial--and wishing it had lasted longer...all because of the music.

Well, I just saw the abridged version of that commercial on tv and it got me to thinking and I began to realize something.  Music in car commercials lately have gotten really...well...good!  Think about it, even before Dirty Vegas'  "Days Go By" was heard in the Mitsubishi commercials(which have now moved on with another equally catchy tune), I remember a car commercial featuring a emo-style song that I liked so much, it prompted me to get Kazaa just so I could find and dl it to my computer.  I never found the tune though... -_-

The point is it seems that car commercials have become very atuned to the music industry it seems and it playing songs that I only wish they played on the radio.  What do you think?

Of the commercials I've noticed, the main thing behind that would be the hard rock music that weren't originally recorded for the commercial to SUVs and trucks for the whole rough, tough "bad___" image.

I dunno, but it pissed me off that a Led Zeppelin song is involved in advertising.

Yes, because Zeppelin would not have any say in whether their music is used in ads. As much as it may suck to the fans, songs are there for the most part because the artists want them to be.

From an advertising standpoint, one of the few I'm actually somewhat QUALIFIED to discuss, I find that car ads generally have the best tie to music. The reason for this is simple, if you think about it - buying a car is an emotional experience. If it wasn't, we'd all be driving those cardboard boxes from the new Saturn commercial.

That said, what can an advertiser do to convey an emotion or a feeling to their car? Pictures and sound. And, since the car itself has to be in most of the pictures, then that leaves sound as the driving emotive factor in the ad.

For my money, Mitsubishi is doing this well right now, parodies aside (thank you, Dave Chappelle). The king of emotional advertisements has been for several years and will remain VW, though.

Oh, and for the record, I think the CbUT belongs to Twisted_Freak.

Did I say that it pissed me off because I thought it was being used without their consent? I'm pissed because they don't have that pure artistry aura around them to me anymore. I'd be pissed off if the song was basically stolen, just for decent reasons.

Wow, I can't believe you actually said "Hell's Bells". I've never heard anyone say that besides me and my friend Alexa. (Barring the AC/DC song of course)

Yeah, the Led Zeppelin song was just irritating to be seen on a car commercial.

The one ad that really got me was the one with the "Mr. Blue Sky" song. The guy going to work every day, and it makes it all seem like he's bored with his life, splitting the picture into 4 screens for monday-thursday and the whole "same old thing every day at the office". At the end he just looks outside and it says "the new VW Bug convertible". That confused the hell out of me for a while, until i realized they must be meaning that he made his life interesting with his new car. VERY catchy song in that commercial. I actually had to go and download it.

I don't know. Car commercials and their choice music selections seem to ruin songs to me. Ford using the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" really destroyed taht song for me. And Toyota really has a knack for taking crappy songs, adding their own lyrics to it, to make it even crappier. Ex: I recall one summer when Toyota used the corny Mambo #5. Yet instead of saying "A little bit of [chick name] in my life. A little bit of [chick name] by my side...", they replaced the chick names with car types. Really gets annoying.
But by far, THE absolute WORST song to car commercial theme has got to be Chevy trucks and that damn "Like a Rock" song. If I ever find Bob Seiger, I'll be forced to run him over with a Ford F250 (Chevys suck!) because that song has been played over and over and over on those damn Chevy commercials (i'm getting irritated about that song just thinking about it)
Gotta love what Dave Chapelle did to spoof the Mitsubishi commercial with teh chick dancing in the front seat to "Days Go By". That was funny :)

Anyway...

The epitomy of good music usage in crappy car commercials happened when Ford began using We Will Rock You by Queen. Honestly, what the hell!
