Gamesradar.com released a brief cast of characters guide on their main site earlier today, and it raised my eyebrows a little bit. Several of the translated names have been changed - notable ones include Argath Thadalfus (Algus) and Count Orlandeau. On another note, Mustadio and Balthier (an extra character, from FF XII) have the same last name: Bunansa. I'm not sure what I think about all of this, but I'll get over it, because the game looks really neat and just about all of the sample dialogue lines also provided in the preview looks *awesome*. Examples:
Ramza: "I have no wish to change the world." Delita: "'Tis your birth and faith that wrong you... not I." Ovelia: "Would that I were born no princess." Sweet. Even if the names change, I'm sure that the dialogue is going to kick ass in this new version. Now all I need to do is wait another week.... Nothing like a good layer of fresh paint to make an old house look brand new. The new artwork looks much crisper than the PSX's, but if the screenshots behind them are from the actual game, it looks relatively untouched.
I think the game could do with some rewritten dialog. The original was often hard to follow because of some confusing mistranslations. Personally, I still don't quite get what happened at the very end, after the credits. Possible spoilers: highlight to view Y'know, that scene with Delita and Ovelia. In before purists get their panties in a knot over the changes. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

From what I've heard and read so far, all they've done is some retouches, with the addition of two new special characters and two new job classes. It's not much, but between the small amount of new content, the portable nature of this addition, and the multiplayer capabilities, it's enough to have made me preorder it.

Supposedly the extreme slowdown present in the Japanese version wasn't fixed for the American release, but damned if I can't find where I read that.
Most likely on QuarterToThree, since they're mostly professional game reviewers and what-not, and they'd actually have access to it now. -------------------- With the lights out It's less dangerous |

Extreme slowdown? When/where does this occur?

"Extreme" might have been a bad word.
I don't know exactly where since I haven't played it, but word is almost every action you take other than movement and attacking physically has slowdown occur. Like, summon or spell animations and the like. Some people were complaining that the Japanese version was pretty bad and distracting, but honestly they could just be overreacting. It's not like the game's fast anyways. -------------------- With the lights out It's less dangerous |

Oh, animation slowdown. That's old news; happens to me all the time when playing the original. I doubt it'll be unbearable.

I can't say I've ever noticed any slowdown in the PSX version, other than an occasional hang-up when a spell animation JUST starts.
Anyways, I think this video gives an idea of what I'm talking about. It's... a lot worse than the original. Still most definitely playable, but disappointing none-the-less. If you read the development paragraph it says that the slowdown has been reduced in the North American release. I don't expect it to be too bothersome. -------------------- ADAEAFADAEAFAGAEAFAGAAAFAGAAABbAGAAAFAGAEAFADAEA C#ADAAABbGAAAFAGAEAFADAEAC#AFADAEAC#ADAAABbAGAA AEAFADAGAEAFADAEAC#AD |

The slowdown during animations is pretty obvious but it happened from time to time during the playstation version anyway so its only a small bother

I'm definitely upgrading to a PSP Slim at the first opportunity. I remember experiencing slowdowns during summon animations (Sylph being particularly bad), but slowdowns for throwing a stone?
Anywho, the translation changes are interesting. I'm not entirely sure yet whether or not I like them. Time will tell. |
