Well, I've been thinking about game design and all that stuff, and I'd really like to try to just create a game from nothing. Looking to create a homebrew SNES game, but I'd like to run it on an emulator.
I really don't need much help with that stuff, but I'd like to know if anyone has tried to make a homebrew game, what programs to use, recommended stuff, etc. Anything that can help really.... I know I'm being really vague on this, but I just started thinking about doing it this morning, and Google searching has provided little to know straightforward results. -------------------- We, who cannot see into tomorrow, have no way of knowing... Here is a topic to check out.
Silverlance and Caesar have been working on a custom mod for FFV. Silverlance is also working on his own retro style RPG. From what I've heard them talk about, the majority of the programming is in pure hexidecimal. If your interested in an endeavor of that type of programming, I believe they would probably have the most data and knowledge (that I know of) here a CoN. They could also tell you a lot of the ins and outs of how functional RPGs work with the Hex format. PM either, or I'm sure they'll check out this thread at some point. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Yea RL and I have been in the process of making a completely original FFV ROM hack. As leilong said, it is all done using a hex editor and working with hexadecimal (disregarding any apps that RL made to help us...but those were made using his knowledge of the hex). However, that is only if you plan to hack an existing ROM and use its engine to create your own version of the game.
If you want to make your own game from the ground up, completely from scratch with not even the engine made for you, then I will be no help. RuneLancer (Silverlance on here) would be the one to ask, or maybe nyxojaele since he is making a 3D remake of FFVI on his own. However, I think he, too, is using a graphics engine. It depends how literal you are with this "from nothing" business. I consider nyxojaele's project to be from scratch even though he is using an existing graphics engine to save him months (maybe more) of time and agony. As stated before, RL and I are using the FFV engine to make our hack, so ours isn't entirely "from nothing", either. The only member here who has made the entire engine and everything from nothing is RuneLancer/Silverlance himself. Unfortunately, he has become a little difficult to contact recently due to a few technical complications with his computer. He will surely find this thread and give you some more helpful advice when he gets internet access again. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |
