Translation is an inexact science. "Narche" is not an uncommon way of translating the name, and to realize that Square's translation teams are sometimes inconsistent is hardly a revelation.
This comes from the opening trailer on the PSX game. You can probably find it on Youtube. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Better question-- Is it pronounced "narsh", "narshay" or something else altogether? I've been saying "narshay" simply because I though it sounded better.

I said "narsh" in my first um... half playthru (I got mad I killed Shadow and started over, only to realize I killed Shadow again by waiting long enough on FC but selecting Jump instead of Wait. I literally kicked myself.) but now I'm partial to narshay. Frivolous, I know, but I'm a random sorta guy.

Fishy like how? It sounds French. If it smells of anything, it's cheesey!

I personally pronounce it "NAR shee". So, "KAYvs awf NAR shee".
And as R51 said, translation isn't an exact science, and Squenix occasionally doesn't seem to translate things in ways that make the most sense. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Likewise, I've always pronounced it "narsh", and, well, I don't like the sound of "narshay", to be honest.

A couple things about the opening AMV (it was pretty, but still), this being one of them. The other was that TERRA WAS BLONDE! Why!? Both her sprite and menu portrait have blue hair. It makes sense for two reasons:
A: She's a Japanese character. B: She's half Esper, her hair could be plaid and it wouldn't stick out in her culture of origin. Moderator Edit If you want to discuss your beefs with the AMV, make a new thread instead of derailing this one. I have counted 4-5 of your posts in the last few minutes that are not related at all to the topic. Try to fix this before I read too many more. Also, it might help to read these. -Caesar This post has been edited by Caesar on 8th August 2007 03:07 -------------------- "Son of a submariner"~Kefka: FFVI "Is he a friend of yoursh?" Amano draws her blonde, and his designs were the basis for the FMV. Although, if you look closely, her hair does have a bit of a green (not blue) shimmer in the FMVs, which is a nice touch. Clearly not as acceptable as her having actual green hair, but still. I think it was established that her sprite has green hair to differentiate her from Celes and Relm, who both have blonde hair (though the latter has a hat). -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Relm's blonde? I always thought she had Locke-ish gray/brown hair...

Sorry, my mind tends to wander. While there's a natural line of logic (we start with translation inconsistencies, then we get to the opening AMV, then to Terra's hair, then hair for all the female characters... you get the idea) That being said, I'm done.

Quote Fishy like how? It sounds French. I got your meaning, I was just making a chee-- er... corny joke. I think the best explanation for the whole deal is just a brief bout of bad translation in general. For God's sakes it opens with
Command to the Empire Force in particular... I mean... It's not "All Your Base Are Belong To Us!" bad but it's a much milder form of such things. -------------------- "Son of a submariner"~Kefka: FFVI "Is he a friend of yoursh?" After pronouncing anything a certain way for 13 years, the alternatives are going to sound strange. I went with nar-shee for years, but I take the fact that I was in Junior high at the time as an excuse.
There are pronunciation guidelines, albeit loose ones. Most names are based on Japanese equivalents, where pronunciation is self-evident. I've been trying to bring myself in line with that. -------------------- "Cavefish is delicious, but only if cooked." |
