Its simple, what does Final Fantasy mean to you? Is it an escape from reality, or is it for the fun, or maybe the mystery, or maybe you want to get every single obtainable item/ability/Magic in the game.
Me, personally, its all of the above ![]() -------------------- You Can't Escape... Nowhere to run... Nowhere to hide... |

The amazing plots and their multiple twists. being completely entranced by the story and characters to the point of feeling that you are actually part of the game, when the game becomes much more than just that. carried along with the characters from the humble beginings to the climax. that is what many final fantasies, and a collection of other RPGs mean to me.

Next to nothing, to be honest.
It's a game. A form of entertainment. At one time, it's medium of presentation, "gaming", meant a lot to me. Growing older though, my priorities have changed heavily and branched out into other directions. Some of the older members here may have heard of my fondness for FFX and the memories that it gave me and my wife for our first year of marriage. While it is true that the game was a catalyst for that, the game is not what I hold dear from the experience. In short, the FF series is fun for the most part, but if the whole thing ended tomorrow and I never heard a peep about it again, that would be okay too. -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

Final Fantasy itself has always just been a fun game series (VIII not included, of course.) and a nice way to kill some free time. I've always loved video games, probably as much as any other casual gamer out there would, and I certainly appreciate the series itself for being, for the most part, a collection of great games.
Still, what means more to me is the memories associated with playing those games and what it's led me to. Growing up, video games is what started a lot of friendships, most of which I still maintain today. The RPG genre especially led to my eventual interest in literature, as I was always mostly interested in the plot of the game and the way the story was told. In a lot of cases, with the older Final Fantasies, there's that sense of nostalgia when thinking back to my childhood and my first play-through of IV, VI or being a young teenager and identifying with the angst theme in VII. Those games, particularly VI, brought me to this site, where I've met plenty of interesting characters over the years and equally made quite a few memories. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Final Fantasy doesn't exactly mean as much to me as gaming in general does. It was one of my earlier loves, and it's sort of a point of pride to me that I play and know intimately the "old school" FF's. Otherwise though, it's just another peice of the mosiac of games I enjoy.

These all seem silly, but they're true:
~A new way to get out my mild OCD/micromanagement issues. Nothing like plotting out the ratio of levels to gil to locations. ~A whole new way to waste ungodly hours when I can't sleep. I am powerleveler, hear me roar. ~Interesting late night convos. Whenever any of us are leveling, we get on voice chat...oh the things we say. ~The first games I had an actual desire to win and or conquer (Highest levels, all magic/items, whole nine yards). Didn't get that with any of my Gamcube games or my other PS2s. ~Bishiedom. It's a long, power-level-convo-related story. |

To me, Final Fantasy simply means a great RPG series with many countless classics despite many bumps in the road. They've had a great run with the title and are still apparently evolving with FFXIII and the FFVII Compilation; not necessarily that I love that for the games, but simply becuase Square-Enix hasn't yet finished their FFs. I also second Hamedo when he said:

It used to mean alot to me, when I was younger and had nothing better to do, I'd lose myself in the plots and the thoughts of the characters.
But that was all a while back, now, I have more things to focus and care about now and I find Final Fantasy and gaming in general to not have the same importance anymore. So now it doesn't mean a great deal, but it used to when I was younger. -------------------- In the end, it boils down to two simple choices. Either you do or you don't. |

Final Fantasy, unlike most people who commented on this thread it seems (which is fine, I mean no ill will by that,) means a whole lot to me.
I grew up on Final Fantasy. My father is japanese, so when I was a young kid, he was playing the first final fantasy on the famicom that he had bought from some japanese import store in new jersey, and I would sit in his lap and watch him play, and I soon grew to love the game. And as time when by, I would go on to play ff iv and vi when they came out in the states, move on to viii, then x, then backtrack and play v, vii, ix, x-2, so on and so forth. I even played Final Fantasy Legend (a weird gameboy game that was actually not originally a final fantasy, but given the franchise name in america to boost sales.) Basically Final Fantasy is a connection I hold dear with my father, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm older now, and I got stuff do, you know? But I still love it. The one thing about final fantasy that really grew on me separately from it's connection to my father is the music. That's what i go to school for, and I appreciate it more than I ever have. that's primarily why I've picked it up so vehemently in the past months. I'm really, REALLY sad that Nobuo didn't do FFXII. I sure as hell hope he doesn't drop from the series. I mean, what would we all do without our victory fanfare?? |

Nowadays the first thing that comes to mind is "diminished returns," but back in the FFT heyday, I would've sold a kidney for some more-a that quality gaming. I just find the series getting stale and frivolous so whatever loyalty is gone -- oh well.

Since none of my friends play FF, it's something that stays between me and my sister. We chat about it, we make fun of it, etc. It's lots of hours wasted with the two of us sitting there laughing at a television screen. It's something to pass the time when I'm bored, or want to get away. It's a lot of things. Of course, there are other games I can think of that have given me more amusement, but FF is the series with the most amount of games to try.

Not much, just a series of games that I play sometimes. I have no friends or anything that even know what it is.
EDIT: But when I think of it, I maybe should try to convince my brother in playing it... This post has been edited by Gigantuar on 25th November 2007 16:10 |

Quote ("The Fictional Dictionary of Videogames 'n Such") Final Fantasy: N. 1. A very popular NES RPG made by Square-Enix (formerly known as Squaresoft). 2. Usu. followed by roman numerals Square-Enix's next big moneymaker. 3. Any video game, made by the Square-Enix corperation, with the label Final Fantasy in its title with a large number of minor cameo appearances from other games bearing this title. 4. A fantasy which is final, except when applied to the definitions above: I.E. "This will be my last story, my final fantasy so to speak." -------------------- |

It means a series I don't care for anymore* -- either the games have changed or my tastes have. Maybe it's the demands of my schedule, but I prefer games with a sense of immediacy; I want to skip all exposition and tutorials and jump right in. As I get older, I play fewer and fewer games due to time and money constraints (and, quite frankly, a declining level of interest in general), but there are still a handful of series I can play forever (Mario, Contra, you know the deal). As long as some developers continue to provide that (allegedly archaic) arcadey action (how's that for alliteration?), I'll continue to invest in game systems.
*I still like the remakes, and Square Enix never has trouble supplying those! Final Fantasy III is like Final Fantasy V only much more enjoyable. This post has been edited by The_Pink_Nu1 on 4th December 2007 06:04 -------------------- SPEKKIO: "GRRR...That was most embarrassing!" |

Fun, the perfect word to discribe most video games. There is no Final in Fantasy until Squire/Enix goes belly-side-up from the fans not buying all of their numious rereleases. The only thing that makes me crenge about it is how close the remakes are timewise.

Well, playing the SNES Final Fantasy's (IV & VI), is like revisiting my childhood. Man, I had so many imaginary adventures about these two games. It was great. So when I play these two, I feel a wave of comfort and nostalgia, and enjoyment, even though I know the games by heart.
The newer ones is more like just another game, with a few exceptions where I grew attached to a character (Montblanc, for example). -------------------- Could you repeat that? |
