I've never understood why people pick the gauge option. It's sooo useful to know what the players' max HP is during battle. I've only played the game that way.

I always choose the bar because it is the default setting.
I have actually never changed that setting until you mentioned it. I tried it to se what it was, and I just prefer to see when my characters will be ready to attack. -------------------- "My name is Atma...I am a power both ancient and unrivaled... I pick the gauge, because I like to know who is up next and how soon. I usually know when my characters are full HP wise, or are in trouble, etc.

Max HPs always.
I always forget people's max HPs. If I need someone else to act, I just keep tapping the X or Y button to check other people's turns. FF6 isn't one of those games were you desperately need characters to go one after another in bursts. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. I have a choice? (I'm assuming this is a GBA exclusive...)
I usually have a general idea where my characters' max HP is at, so the gauge is really handy. Especially in those tight there's-two-dudes-left-and-they-have-200HP-each situations. -------------------- "All roads are connected somehow. SNES version also. i choose the guage. so i can tell whose turn is comming up so i can set up strategic attacks, defenses, magics accordingly. i dont bother switching turns to see who is ready and who isnt. i only switch turns when its part of my strategy. square should have made it so when your max HP is around 50%, numbers turn yellow, 25% orange, and 10% red. i think ive seen it done on another game, maybe ff7? correct me if i am wrong though. -------------------- "Life: The deepest cut that wilt not heal. I just used the default gauge bar. I didn't know it could be changed.

I chose Guage, seeing as I usually have a good idea of what my character's max HP is anyway, whereas I couldn't keep track of who has a turn when without my turn guages.

Gauge. They kneel if they get low enough on HP, and that's all I really need to know.

Same as many people--I didn't even know you could choose between these two options.
To be honest, I'd rather have both. Or have the "thin" HP bar that FF7 has. But I guess it was useful to see when my character's turn was up next. Similarly, I still don't know how to see non-equippable characters' equipment. How do I do that? -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I'm not sure but I think you push up on the battle menu screen. I know you can access Gen. Leo's outside of battle but you can't change anything of course. -------------------- |

Yeah, I think that same function also tells you what each moogle is equipped with, and also reveals that Umaro comes with a non-removable Bone Club weapon.
There are a ton of features in the game's control panel which I never bothered with, heh. This, and the gauge/maxHP option, are only two of them. I'm aware of an option that lays out Fight, [Skill], Magic, and Item in a diamond-shape pattern, but I haven't ever tried it. (Perhaps that's what inspired Square's design of Super Mario RPG's battle menu control scheme?) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Having now tried the HP bar. I prefer the gauge. It's not like it's even one or the other. It's one thing with an extra or just the one by itself so not a difficult choice for me.

I think FFVI came out in 1993 (at least FFIII (US) came out in 1993 in the US), and I think SMRPG is a 1995 production. Though SMRPG, unlike FFVI, doesn't have all these menu display options. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. FFVI came out Oct. '94 I believe, yet Mario RPG seemed to be much simpler. To get back on topic, I wish you could choose both. I guess the HP Status is more useful, but I'm really used to the gauge. -------------------- |
