Well, it's probably because since it never came out in the U.S. in the 1990's (when the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and the Sony Playstation dominated the gaming industry at that time). And also because the Nintendo DS is far more popular than the GameBoy Advance (since NDS came out around 2004).. And the GBA is like, what? Seven or six years old?..

Hardly anyone cares about that handheld anyway.. It's like any fad, everybody's into it, and later on everyone ditches it.

Also, SquareEnix is about to release Final Fantasy IV DS this December.. IIRC, they even announced that they would consider bringing FFV and FFVI over to the DS aswell..

DId they mention if they would be similarly styled as FFIII? Or are they sticking to the more traditional style as with the GBA ones? (Which would make little sense...)

Y'know, I'm happy to hear this, but at the same time, I can't help but feel a little perturbed at SquareEnix for such money-grubbing. Ah well, what can we do? If anything, this could mean a resurgence of the PS games too, or at least some DS handheld versions of FFVII-IX, hmm? That could be fun. Roadtrips with FFVII... Mmmm... I really hope Tactics makes its way over to the DS in a non-Tactics Advance sorta' fashion.

Actually, no.
There was no GBA or PSX remake of FF3, because there was no WSC remake, from which the GBA/PSX versions were crafted.

Although there was a prototype before the project was scrapped

They may have planned for it to be released on DS. Give us a game we haven't seen before in a completely new format.

It would definitely attract attention.

Heh, that makes a lot of sense SilverMaudin as the Wonderswan graphics for I were made to be consistent with the SNES graphics of IV V and VI. It's better to have graphical consistency when possible and only to break the mold with good reason. I guess it's safe to assume then, the reason is because they had to craft new graphics for it when it came time to rerelease FF III, that they'd be 3D. This would be due to the popularity of the medium in today's game player's market.

Of course the GBA couldn't handle this. It wouldn't be farfetched to assume they wanted to make it a PSP release, rather then a D.S. due to this but because they already shifted remake focus from the Sony console crowd to the Nintendo handheld crowd, that the D.S. would hold the more profitable market. Lucky Nintendo.

Then, due to the popularity of FF III D.S, they go on a remake frenzy yet again, with complete graphical overhauls being the primary focus of production. This makes me sad because I prefer SNES style graphics over 3D ones and it's another death to the herd. (Oh well, can't stand in the way of progress.)

Edit
This isn't worth a new post altogether but hey, thanks R51. It has a screenshot section too, though they're all JPEG so not everything looks pristine. Anyway, the next two paragraphs are kinda worthless now so people can skip them if they want. I'll keep them up for topic continuity purposes, however.

Of course, this theory kinda falls to the dust if there's no WonderSwan remake of FF II. I know there's a FF I and II package for the PSX, however when I look at the sprites for the NES original, it looks like there are a lot of unique player characters. However, whenever I look for FF II sprites to see how these characters would look in the updated graphical style, I yield no results. Only the FF I half of that release.

The relevance to the theory this factor has is simple. If FF II didn't have fully upgraded graphics and still got an updated release, why not do FF III in the same way? There are possible explanations, I'll admit but it is something of an inconsistent double standard... unless there are unique, updated FF II graphics and I'm just unaware. I'd still like to see them if there are.

RPGamer says that there was a WSC version of FF2.

A Wonderswan remake of FFIII was planned to go along with FFI and II, but since the WSC fell out of popularity in the rise of the Gameboy Advance, it was cancelled. I wish I could remember what interview I read it in, but they basically didn't have enough time with working on other projects to work on a GBA port, so it wasn't until later that it was remade on the DS.
