Well two days ago somebody etched a school shooting threat into the bathroom of a neighboring school. It's so close it's actually considered my school's "Sister School" that school's principle told the kids that they did not have to go to school on that day, and so nobody went to school that day.
Now today some prick etched "There will be a school shooting tomorrow, bi-otch" which sounds like a tasteless joke. (especially after recent events). My School's principle is smarter, and chose to take an alternative route, he called the sheriff's department and asked them to increase security for Friday (There's normally one sheriff at the school during school hours), and he offered a 2,000 dollar reward for whoever did this, and other valuable information may receive compensation. and now it's time to vent. I am sick of this, if I had seen a kid doing that I would have beat the ever living shit out of him, not only was this just done after a hainous school shooting, but My school was just renovated, brand spanking new buildings and everything for this year, and some assholes have been vandalizing the men's bathrooms, so now out of 6 there is only one left (My school has a big campus). And the bathrooms weren't vandalized just once, but three times. My school is not located in a high crime area, Members of the San Diego Chargers live in my town, these kids are really just doing this to piss people off. Now a kid thinks that writing "There will be a shooting tomorrow Bi-otch" will get him out of school, for one damn day. School is almost over, we just had spring break two weeks ago. Now on the off chance that this is serious (he wrote bi-otch which makes it seem like a joke, but you never know). My mom wants my dad to decide is should go to school tomorrow (personally I think it's a hoax, but my mom is still worried). Damn this shit has gotten my blood boiling. I agree with you completely, CS. In my school, there was a gun threat for the Friday after the VTech tragedy (the 20th, I think). Everybody was upset and saying they weren't coming to school, we hired a few police officers to patrol the hallways, all the administrators were on the prowl for suspicious activities and we even had a metal detector at the door (metal tennis raquet + big tennis bag = big suspicious target...no good for me).
Anyways, more than half the school skipped that day (errr...were "legitimately absent"), but I still went because we've had these before. And I was going to Toronto on a school trip that day. Anyways, nobody got shot so it was all good. It was actually a good day for me because there was little to no traffic in the hallways. I could finally get through the hallways without getting a mysterious cut on my arm from one of those freakin huge 20-subject binders with the jagged metal things everywhere. I know it is tasteless, insensitive, and immature, but there will always be some really stupid high schoolers who think it is funny to do. And also, similar to you, there were some pretty similar and serious threats going on across the street in the middle school and the same precautions were taken. No problem over there, either. Sure it gets me mad and I probably would unleash the beast all over whoever did it if I saw them writing it in action, but really, no harm came from it so I should really be thankful. If these kids think that it is a cool joke to write that, they aren't going far in life so I already won. -------------------- Is PJ |

Something similar happened to me recently, someone wrote on the blackboard in an empty room that there was gonna be a shooting at 3:00, when the buses come and everyone's out of class. Luckily, they matched the kids hand-writing and got the kid suspended for a very long time. I'm not sure, but I think he got kicked out and let back in but had to repeat the grade.

Same thing happened to me too a little while back, after the VA Tech shooting. Late thursday afternoon (last week) there was a written hit-list on one of the boys' bathrooms with the names of particular students in my school.
I knew about this since they sent each and every student a letter about the incident, and informed parents of students whose names were mentioned in the list. But it didn't take too long, since the jerk was finally caught and expelled. And it was just a hoax. Now people are just trying to break that south korean kid's friggin 33 record. The world is so messed up these days... This post has been edited by karasuman on 4th May 2007 19:53 |

i had something like that happen at my school to. i caught him in the act and told an assistant principal. he was suspended
another thing is, in my history class, people were talking about what they'd do if the found out the were terminally ill, or that they'd die. they said they'd kill as many people as they possibly could! saying, 'im gonna die anyway, might as well take a few people with me....' someone interjected here saying 'starting with the president!' and they laughed!!! sometimes, i just REALLY get pissed at these kind of kids -------------------- Aujourdhui a commence avec toi. |

2 days and I'm out of education forever! I didn't really have to deal with crap like this in college, but back in high school somebody tagged the courtyard with some pseudo-deep hogwash like "Submission is slavery and safety is an illusion." Nothing ever came of it.

In high school, we always had security (I de-emphasize the word 'security', it was just a name for them) but to have sheriff police was something unheard of at the time 'cuz we only saw cops when drugs, weapon-inflicted violence, or rape was involved. I definately agree with you about your stance. Ordinarily, I'd simply say "kids will be kids", but with the recent school shootings, it's nothing to sneeze at and somehow, it has to stop 'cuz shootings and violence is not something kids should have to deal with in school. Isn't television, movies, and games enough violence for somebody?

Comes as no suprise to me, you americans have a poor system you will eventually destroy yourselves at this rate. No one should be allowed a gun, gun's are made for one thing - killing other people. Killing people is stupid, we should not kill our own race we should work to better ourselves but alas the human race is too retarded to notice this, so we have wars over pathetic things such as belief systems... Sometimes it's just nice to sit back and laugh at how stupid the human race really is.

People like that have always annoyed me. The high school I attended was full of them, as well as bad security, which only encouraged them. The college I attend currently hasn't had anything as far as problems with this sort of stuff (as long as I've been there at least)... I imagine it's because most the people I attend with, actually understand the importance of being there. It's pathetic if you think about it. People like that are just setting themselves up for a much harder life... especially if they refuse to grow out of that type of mind set.
I also believe that kids will be kids, but stuff like this, doesn't fit into that category. This post has been edited by xDrkMage on 4th May 2007 17:07 -------------------- "Space for Rent" |

I have had something similar happen as well - at my old school, several bomb threats were made, (we also had a very large campus) and each time a letter was sent home notifying the parents, allowing them to do whateve rthey saw fit to do about the situation. We always had four cops at our school. But that is because we were notorious for fighting.

No gun threats, but some at my school drew a swastika and wrote "f*ck school" under it. Everyone thinks it was this really stupid kid who says he's from the "Ghetto of Milford" even though there is no ghetto, or even relatively impoverished place, in Milford. But the principal doesn't know who did it so no one in the pod where it happened gets to go on the next field trip.

Banning guns all-together is damn-near impossible to do and even if they're made illegal, there will always be a black market. I don't like thinking about school shootings period. I think it's disturbing to think that my city is the only city in the world to have more than one school shooting take place. Hey hey, we're up to three now. It's a ridiculous situation and it's carried out by people who are basically under false pretenses of the world. I'm sorry your life sucks, but deal with it like the rest of us do. There will always be people who like to use these situations to do things like get out of school, hell, someone called in a Bomb-threat at Dawson today just so they wouldn't have to write a final exam and could go see Spiderman 3 instead. He was caught and arrested, and we pretty much knew it was a hoax, but still. Regardless, you can't let the few people with poop for brains drag the rest of us down or cause us to constantly worry about how safe being somewhere is. Looks like VTech started a trend. *rolls eyes* Earlier this week, somebody at my school set another student up to make it seem like he had a hit list and was planning to shoot people. The boy who was set up had the RCMP investigating him and everything, all because some immature brat apparently had something against him. XP

Well Today went as expected, no shooting, a lot of police, classrooms with an average size of 10 (only about 30% of the senior lot was filled up), they were a lot of ruined lectures, even in the second period class I teach, another teacher came up with a great idea to just group our classes together and play dodgeball, In human bio my teacher offered extra credit today for all the students who came and I managed to raise my Grade from a high B to a low A, a pretty good day. Except that it turned out a shooting happened at an elementary school in Vista, i don't know any details, but I know it happened because I overheard the cops talking about it and when my mom came home she talked about it.

Anyway, I actually knew the guy who called in a bomb threat to my high school. This being shortly after the World Trade Center bombing (i.e. the one BEFORE they collapsed). Back then, nothing happened. No cutting school or anything. I didn't even know there'd been a bomb scare till a month later. Nobody cared. Rightly so, it was bs anyway. -------------------- |

So let me get this straight, Rarthyr posts flamebait about gun control being a solution, and four people dogpile on him and declare that he's missed the point of the thread. DrkMagimaster282 goes ahead and all but states that illegal immigration is the cause of all these problems, and he gets a free pass.

To my eyes, DM282 merely is mentioning an incident he probably percives as one that was preventable in that the person in question was an illegal immigrant, known to be one, who should have been reported prior to the incident as an illegal immigrant. Lacking further information coupled with the aburptness and general confusing manner of his post leaves it wide open to a variety of interpretations. I agree though that his post has little relevance beyond that a professor was murdered.
In this case, it has little to do with firearms and firearm control, but more the fact some people are utter morons who have reasoned that a hoax threat can cause a lot of chaos for little effort. Take a fake bomb threat somewhere in a major urban centre, like claim there's a bomb on the New York Stock Exchange floor somewhere, or claims that five malls somewhere in the US have a nerve gas bomb in the air vents or something. Resulting chaos as police try to investigate without causing a panic and failing inevitably as soon as sone flatfoot leaks it to a friend or relative who then phones CNN... And all for what, less than a dollar? It doesn't matter if it's a plot out of 24 or Spooks, the police will still have to take it seriously. It could actually be a horrendously effective form of psychological terrorism if applied "correctly". Constant hoaxes followed by a real incident in a nation that was somewhat paranoid and nervous before 9/11 would cause major long term damage as people lost faith and trust in the government and what to believe. If I recall correctly, a major incident always leads to hoax threats of similar things happening. On the 11th of september and the days following I believe I once read that the NYPD recived dozens of hoax bomb threats. After a school shooting, it's fairly common for semi-copycat hoaxes to pop up These school based hoaxes are psychological in nature as well. They are done either as some cheap prank to scare people for a laugh or with genuine vindictiveness, but either way, it's a form of terrorism IMO and such individuals should be tried as terrorists even if it is a hoax. Sure, most definitions of terrorism involve bodily harm or fatalities being caused by attacks, but surely disarray and an unexpected and frightening (albiet false) threat would be enough to cause the same goals of terrorism? If such a move were made, it would reduce these hoaxes a little I think. After all, the fact that your attempt to skip class for a day might mean you'll skip liberty for a few years via being slapped into a federal prison, that you'll be placed on no-fly lists and come under a hell of a lot of scrutiny for the rest of your life should act as a deterrent to at least some of the idiots who think it's clever to fake these things. However, when it comes to real shooting incidents, I have to point out gun control is unlikely to have any real preventative effect. Recent incidents in the UK have proven that despite the fact we have some of the toughest gun laws in the world, criminals can still get their hands on real firearms. Sure, the fact it's harder to get a gun will maybe prevent a few future shootings, but at the same time, anyone determined would obtain a gun somehow. I've heard claims for about £30/$60 I could apparently purchase a fully automatic AK47 in the UK, if I knew the right (wrong) people. That's about £70 cheaper than a REPLICA AK which is IMPOSSIBLE to make fire a real bullet. So, in summary: Major Incident = Causes copycats of copycat hoaxes: pretty normal, little can really be done as... Chavs = morons Hoax threats = form of terrorism Gun control = Ultimately pointless as a full ban will not have much effect especially in the US Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 = cheaper to buy in the UK than a replica. And as of October, probably easier to most people. Telephone = Potential superweapon for terrorists. Or ticket to a free five year plus stay in senic Guantanamo Bay with catering and secure accomodation defended and patrolled by experienced US Military personell, as well as yoga classes! Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar flavour crisps = Not mentioned nor really relevant to the thread but nonetheless tasty and a more light hearted end to this are serious thread this are serious post on serious internets, oh em gee, ar oh eff ell, etc. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Apparently, someone at my school made a threat, probably hoping for a day of no school. We still have to go to school, but the police are lurking around so he can't even ditch, how's that for irony?

I have probably already mentioned this, but last year a man set up packages labeled "bomb" throughout the city centre. They were made to look real and did look real, according to the bomb squad - all they lacked were the explosives themselves. An e-mail with the locations of all the "bombs" was sent to the newspapers and some authorities, with the writer posing as an extreme gay rights activist. Double sicko.
There was no real threat, but it spawned terror nevertheless and the person who set up those fake bombs had made a point of showing, that he could make a real one. Fake scares, like that one, or like the ones you mentioned happen at school ARE, as Del said, a form of terrorism and people who make them should be persecuted in the same way people who make "real" attacks are. Also gun control won't do sh**, since if someone is desperate enough, they'll take a cleaver and/or a butcherknife (whichever's handy) from their kitchen and slash people instead of shooting them. Or set the school on fire. I mean how hard is it to obtain gasoline? Rathyr: your point? Del: pass the crisps. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Quote DrkMagimaster282 goes ahead and all but states that illegal immigration is the cause of all these problems, and he gets a free pass. Elessar, DM282 just mentions that he was an illegal immigrant, not that it was a cause of, or had anything to do with his reasoning behind him going and killing a teacher. It's you post in this thread Elessar that jumps to that, I was about to mention your post, but then I realized it was given as a sarcastic response to another's post and just left it unmentioned. The topic of this thread is as stated Quote In this case, it has little to do with firearms and firearm control, but more the fact some people are utter morons who have reasoned that a hoax threat can cause a lot of chaos for little effort. This can include actual shootings, bombings, and threats for a comparison to this urban faux-terrorism. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Like I said, you're being overly defensive over a sacred cow. Of course you don't see anything wrong with the illegal immigrant post, that it doesn't raise red flags just by reading it proves my point.
Quote (DrkMagimaster282) There was a real incident of this at the University of Washington where an illegal immigrant came and shot one of our professors, i beieve, and some people already knew about this guy and his legality status. If they had known, why not mention might i ask. Supposedly he was also somewhat mental, as far as i remember, and was dating the woman professor. 1) Illegal immigrant. Not student. Not profession. Not even 'some guy'. The descriptor was illegal immigrant. 2) People knew of his 'illegal' status, so why not mention it? The implication being that had they deported the guy, the shooting wouldn't have happened. 3) He was retarded. 4) He was dating our women. The only thing missing was a snide remark about the guy being gay or islamofacist. Again, such a post doesn't raise red flags (perhaps because it didn't insult America) but everyone dogpiles on the guy who dares talk about gun control. So yes, I laid on the sarcasm because no one else had, because he had gotten a free pass despite the usual policy of indiscriminate burnination. You see, I don't hide behind the excuse of being 'off-topic' to wave off an argument. Especially when the argument directly addresses preventing the opening post's scenario, thus making your excuse very flimsy indeed. Dragon Fire had the right idea. Rathyr is an idiot, or at least, too naive to see the implications of such an ideal, but that doesn't make him wrong. Guns are the only reason why such a threat is taken so seriously, because guns supply a single human being with sufficient chemical and kinetic force to make him a threat to dozens of people. That they have ease-of-use on their side (unlike homemade bombs) and are relatively accessible (when's the last time you detonated C4?) only validates the threat in the eyes of the cops. No guns would send us back to the middle ages in terms of domestic violence: easily beaten down by mob justice. ... given how witch burnings went in the past, I'm not sure I want that. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

I agree with Elessar. Mentioning that the perpetrators of these crimes are immigrants, illegal or not, is completely irrelevant to the matter at hand. The problem isn't that we let Koreans into our country, or that we didn't deport whoever... It's that there are psychos out there who do things like this, period.
If it were only the immigrant community committing these crimes, you might be able to argue that the connection is relevant. I don't see how you can pull that off, though, given that the vast majority of mass shootings in the United States within the past several years have been perpetrated by native-born citizens. Really, as far as I'm concerned, the people trying to bring anyone's immigrant status into this discussion are as guilty of xenophobia as Bill O'Reilly was when he took a drunk driving case and reduced it to "see? this is why these people should be deported immediately." Sure, deporting all immigrants would prevent them from committing crimes in this country. It would also keep them from contributing to our society in the myriad positive ways that they do, but that's besides the point, which is that preventing a small percentage of whatever type of crime by culling the population completely fails to address the larger issue of why that crime is being committed in the first place. The incident that provoked this entire discussion has nothing to do with whether the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant! A guy goes and murders his girlfriend, and this is an IMMIGRATION issue? Are you people serious? The problem here is domestic violence! It doesn't really surprise me that people are more comfortable blaming this on a "them" that they already don't like than on acknowledging that violence against women is a pervasive problem in our own society, but, come on, really. Quote (Elessar @ 5th May 2007 21:37) Like I said, you're being overly defensive over a sacred cow. You're being "overly defensive over a sacred cow" yourself. You want to protect the guy just because he's an illegal immigrant, or at least you make it seem so. I think DrkMagimaster wanted to point out that: a ) The shooting COULD have been prevented. b ) They should've seen it coming, since he was mental c ) the woman the guy was dating = the professor he shot, so he might have had his reasons, no matter how wrong they were. Where you see an attack on immigrants, I see only a badly written post. You also stated, that explosives are hard to come by and hard to use. Bull****. Any chemistry buff will, from material bought at the proverbial corner store, make explosives, that maybe aren't on par with C4, but ARE a real threat. Also, a simple timed fuse is frighteningly easy to build. If a bomb threat is disregarded due to a line of thought similiar to what you mentioned, it's stupidity and lack of foresight. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Well SM has already presented some of my argument.
Elassar, I see Illegal Immigrants every day; going out making money, driving cars, buying groceries, and taking their kids to school. You think it matters to me that an observation was made that the shooter of that incident was an Illegal Immigrant? If he had said balding fat guy, would you have cared? Quote If it were only the immigrant community committing these crimes, you might be able to argue that the connection is relevant. Kara, no one is arguing that. Quote have been perpetrated by native-born citizens. I'm well aware of that fact, where are you and Ellasar coming from you're assuming somebody is having and argument that we should deport illegal immigrants, and that is completely off-topic. The only person to say that we should deport immigrants was Elassar, which was a blatant sarcastic response to a post he over-thought, and injected his own assumptions into. Quote You see, I don't hide behind the excuse of being 'off-topic' to wave off an argument. That's because you need to pull your head out of your butt, you see that little button occasionally on your screen that says "New Topic" Moderator Edit Congratulations on your promotion to mod! Oh, wait... that didn't happen. And clean up your language. ![]() It's even at the top and bottom of the page, you can even cite this page if you wanted to. Lastly I wanted to keep this thread on-topic, but because of your lack of consideration for anything that you do, I had to go off-topic. I am not waving off an argument, "gun control" has appeared off-topic in several threads recently. If someone really desired to discuss it they can easily start a new thread(but of course no one has). I just wanted to keep this thread on topic. So If you're going to post about this again Elassar don't do it here, start a new topic. Quote (Celes of Blades @ 4th May 2007 18:44) Looks like VTech started a trend. *rolls eyes* Earlier this week, somebody at my school set another student up to make it seem like he had a hit list and was planning to shoot people. The boy who was set up had the RCMP investigating him and everything, all because some immature brat apparently had something against him. XP Man, looks like my story was already posted. Rumours are more dangerous than any gun. I can't believe I actually believed those stories that were being told. If someone really did have a gun, why were they letting us walk through the lobby? Nova Scotia has been riddled with problems. Apparently a South Korean man made some kind of threat not too long after the VT shooting. A boy brought an air-pistol to school in Bridgewater. Some other stuff has been happening that I can't remember. This doesn't include guns, but, a man lied his way into an elementary school, went into a grade 2 or 3 classroom, and kissed a bunch of kids. How safe are our schools? -------------------- Why, hello guys! Haven't been around here in a loooong time! http://dragcave.net/user/LadyTwi http://www.backloggery.com/ladytwi |
