I felt like starting a topic on this, becuase from what I've heard, the possibilities of online trading, fighting, and auctioning make the game almost worth buying the DS for.
I guess I'm just looking for input from anyone with the game on how great/terrible it is, because dropping a hundred bucks to buy a DS is substantial enough investment for me to need a really good reason. Auctioning?
Pokemon is also working to blur the line between reality and a virtual world? And people were already complaining about WoW and other MMORPGs... ...I've always said that Pokemon is best an MMORPG. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Now I know the DSes are wireless, but do you say that you can't connect becuase you don't have a WiFi network, or do you have to specifically buy a connector to connect the DS to a network? I have WiFi at home, and if it want's anything more than that, I'll stick to my Wii thanks. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! I've got Diamond, and am about to beat the Elite Four. It's really fun, but it gets a bit repetitive with the battles and random encounters. It's so much better than the old Pokemon games though.
So here's my advice : If you like Pokemon: Get it. If you like collecting stuff : get it. If you hate Pokemon, Don't get it. |

I didn't read ur message until just now when I posted, but it made me smile, because by that advice, I should've boughten diamond and pearl So I went to my local Best Buy today, and they were completely out of all copies of Diamond and Pearl (they even had a special stand up, and it was empty too). I had $45 in gift certificates to BB, so I went entirely unpresidented, and bought the DS with no guarantee of a game. I then went across the street to the local New/Used game store. Of course no used copies, and they were also out of new copies. Feeling defeated, I went next door to there, and hit up Target. They had like 30 copies of each I bought diamond. So now I'm at work, no time to play, but I've discovered that the WiFi network at work does NOT support the DS. Suprise, suprise. My home network will tho, because it's set up wirelessly to sync with my wii. So in about 2-3 weeks, everyone watch out, i'm gonna take my time but I will own the world at some point, especially since it's world-wide WiFi battle ready! I am strongly considering getting one of them. Around six months ago I found a copy of LeafGreen for cheap and then bought a copy of Emerald off of a kid saving up for a Wii, and to be honest I had a pretty good time with it. Pokemon on the DS sounds like a blast and a half, but I should probalby avoid getting it for awhile if I want to have any free time at all during my crucial next few semesters of school.
But it's still damn tempting. I mean, the starters are a tree hippo, a cyborg penguin, and a kung fu monkey. How can you possibly go wrong!? -------------------- |

It's actually a tree tortoise, but there is a hippo in this new batch of monsters. One another note, this is the least amount of new Pokemon released, even less than Gold/Silver. Diamond/Pearl look to be better than Ruby/Sapphire, for some reason I couldn't get into those two. I'm getting the games, but they won't be released in Australia until next month. For everyone that has played in the past: here is your reason to get this game:
Ruby/Saphire/Emrald/FireRed/LeafGreen Transfer. I was reading in the instruction book (yea, I do that sometimes The biggest downside I've found so far (and I only have one badge, I take my time cuz I'm leveling a magikarp into a Gyrados... I do that |)arkShadow and Yomama, this one is directed mostly toward you guys at the moment since nobody else has really spoken up yet, but my friend # is: 5154 9473 4239 And Yomama, I don't know how often you eat fast food, but all the McDonald's in my area are DS wifi compatable. You can find all the local hubs around you here. If anybody is inspired to get this game after reading this, please post your # here! The more the merrier! I imported this game back in September and it really was well worth the wait. The only problem I have with the game is the Battle Tower as it is the only thing keeping me from completing it fully.

There's no way I'm going to buy this... I just don't get the point of Pokemon. I tried Sapphire version on GBA, and it seemed pretty boring.
I work at a Gamestop, and we got equal numbers of Diamond and Pearl in. I just sold our last copy of Diamond yesterday, and we still have half a dozen of Pearl. Why? I thought they were essentially the same game? -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

It's because anyone who's bothered to do any sort of research on the two games has realised that Dialga (the legendary you get first in Diamond) is so much cooler than Palkia (the legendary you get first in Pearl.)

I just bought it yesterday, although I have had only enough time to play the first ten minutes or so and obtain my starter Pokemon. In a way, I am glad that there's less new Pokemon since it means I won't have to memorize so many new names.
I got Pearl, since, I honestly don't like using the legendary Pokemon due to them usually being overpowered, and everything. And everyone I know seems to have picked Diamond...so, why not go against the flow? Although I haven't played much of the game yet, I got a real nostalgic jolt from the message of the 'technology guy' in this game: "Technology is incredible! You can communicate with people around the world wirelessly..." -------------------- |

My sentiments exactly. I played the original GB game (one of them at least) It wasn't too bad - nothing eye-bulgingly awesome by far, but decent enough. I tried another after completing it. Other than different cute little monsters, they were pretty much the same. After a while, you'd expect the concept to grow old but it apparently doesn't. In any event, while a decent game, it doesn't outshine (to me at least) some of the other RPGs out there. I figure, it keeps people busy and makes 'em happy, so more power to them. It's just... not on my priority list. Seriously though, is this the same storyline/etc than the original games? I haven't followed this series much (read: at all) so I could be sorely mistaken... I'd be a little surprised if that were the case though, and it'd be kind of cool if it weren't just another rehash of Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Green/Gold/Silver/Ruby/Sapphire/Eggshell/Squidjuice/Pineapple with a handfull of new features but the same basic game underneath all the fluff. As for the rehash, umm... yes. Yes it is.
You start out in the small town, wander into the grass, grab a pokemon, meet the professor (rowan in this game... yay trees!). Your "rival" is a friend that you duel with rather than an enemy, he's hyperactive and beats all the gyms before you. first gym is rock/ground based, and the boss has a geodude, and an onix, the only difference is he has a third pokemon after, which I believe is probably one the fossil pokemon. The bad guys are Team Galactic, and you're once again trying to be the best trainer in the world. But it's FUN! The one bonus to a predictable storyline is the countless amount of customization that can be done to try and set your own difficulty against your opponets. BTW: my Magikarp is now lvl 18, and can take down pokemon on it's own with tackle. Pokemon for the most part probably never will change it's story. Look at how pokemon snap went over. Edit Anybody else who has this game has still got to let me know ur pal # !!! I wanna play and trade with ppl who aren't just "e-bay"ing their pokemon on the GTS! I have no other friends that 1. Can afford a DS and Diamond/Pearl, or 2. Care. I have all this WiFi potential, and nobody to use it with. One of my jobs even has WiFi at it, so I can link up there! Quote But it's FUN! Pretty much. xD I don't think most people go out to purchase the latest Pokemon game for the storyline...the advances in gameplay mechanics and the new creatures and moves have pretty much what's been keeping me playing them since the Gameboy days. The ability to battle or trade with anyone across the globe is certainly a very major upgrade. And I'm glad that the 'day/night' mechanic has returned, made even more realistic with the DS's internal clock. -------------------- |

I haven't liked a pokemon game since red/blue, it's pretty much the FFVI of the pokemon series. so many glitches and overlooked concepts.
they ended up overpowering Charizard, because special defense and offense were the same stat back then and of course who could forget the Viridian/Cinnabar glitch (row 6) catching Mew within the game. so many. Oh how i miss Charizard and Gyarados in Red/Blue generation, I don't know why they had to go and add in different special stats to weaken Charizard, and remove Gyarados as a dragon type (Water/flying, but Gyarados doesn't fly). as for diamond an pearl I doubt I'll get it, I'm having somewhat of a falling out with videogames. With exceptions such as Guitar Hero and multi player Halo. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Quote and remove Gyarados as a dragon type (Water/flying, but Gyarados doesn't fly). Gyrados was a dragon in name only. He was always Water/Flying. It always miffed me that he couldn't learn fly as a Flying, but if the pokedex ever mentioned him as a dragon, there would only be that reference, and the fact that he learns Dragon Rage (which sucked because it was a set value, and couldn't be not effective/super effective Quote I don't know why they had to go and add in different special stats to weaken Charizard What stats did they add to Charizard? I got both Diamond and Pearl and I'm not too far in either(I'm hoping to transfer the other two starters to my Diamond version from my Pearl version), but I like the game, certainly not much as changed in the series besides a facelift and the new Wi-Fi capabilities. You still start in a small town as a young Pokemon trainer with gumption with the option of choosing between three starters and then leveling your way through 6 gym leaders, fighting a criminal team in between and eventually becoming the Pokemon League Champion...

Quote What stats did they add to Charizard? I got LeafGreen, and he continued to decimate. Well after Red/Blue the stat known as special was divided into Speacial Attack and Special Defense to weaken Psychic and Ghost types (which it did) it also had the same effect on Charizard, while he is still a power house. His special defense is now lower, so blastoise can actually contend now. I used to laugh while kids who had chosen Blastoise as their starting pokemon would run out of Hydro pumps trying to KO my Charizard (would have taken 3-4 to KO) and then i would unleash a slew of attacks, i believe currently Charizard's Special Defense is significantly lower than his Special Attack. As for Gyarados I was certain he was a water/dragon in Red/Blue, I'll have to check on that now though It's been a while and I'm confident to say it was water/dragon, but I'm going to take a look now. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Now that you mention it, yeah, the original game only had 4 stats: Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special. In the end tho, it probably really was for the better...
The only team that could stand up to my mewtwos was another team of mewtwos... When I first got gold and silver tho, I was big into the dark element things. I really liked the concept. I'm not sure that I like bite as dark tho. It's incredibly useful, but it's really a physical attack that because of it's type can pwn ghosts. When was the last time you heard of a ghost being bitten til it faints? Also, for anyone who has the game and has been to the GTS, WTF is up with the people trading a Lv. 5 Magikarp wanting lv 100 pokemon? and legendaries at that! The only trade I saw that looked at all worthwhile for a lv 100 was a pokemon for trade that was carrying a master ball. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Such a genius pokemon. I haven't gotten any games since Pokemon Gold, though. I really want to get back into it, but not only do am I lacking a DS but I also don't know any of these crazy new pokemon so I'd be wayyyy out of the loop. A few of my friends compete in tournies, so I could always ask for help from them sometime, I guess. Maybe in college I'll pick one up, but the Wii is so amazing that I really doubt I'd get a DS. Hardly time to play Wii as is, so I doubt I'd there'd be a time when I would not want to play Wii and want to play Pokemon instead. As good as it looks, I don't know if it could compete with Ultimate Alliance, Paper Mario, or the VC games (or if I bring my SNES to college; SoM, Contra III, LTTP, MMX-X3, etc, etc, etc). I'm really not that interested in any of the new pokemon (except for maybe the fire monkey)
They need to make a pokemon game that has the original 151, plus the better pokemon of the new elements (steel, dark etc.) To add up to 200-ish pokemon, add in the wifi effects, and that's worth playing. and some new legendary pokemon that actually look worth catching, at least back in the day Mewtwo, Mew, Moltres, Zapdos, and Arcticuno looked worth catching. -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Er, yeah, it is 8 gyms, hehe. I tend to rely on my starter all throughout the game and occassionally some useful Pokemon, like say Pidgeot, Golem, and Alakazam.

since we're on the topic of pokemon, i have a question.
are ruby, sapphire, and emerald worth playing? i have the opportunity to get them dirt cheap right now and i want to know if they are a waste of money. the last pokemon game i played was crystal, so i kinda want to see what these ones have to offer -------------------- Aujourdhui a commence avec toi. |
