Alright so I have FFVIa for a while, it seems like every time I play it at school, i always serious crap, i either get comments such as "Whatcha Playin? Is it Pokemon?" or "What hell is that???" or "That game looks stupid or crappy"
I just find that this disturbs me when I play FFVI advance. |

I'm not quite sure i understand what you're saying, but if im getting everything straight, i do agree with you that it is distracting when people come up to me and say those things.
Just keep in mind that these people are curious, and next time they come up to you doing this, just tell them and initiate a conversation, flaunting your FFknowledge as much as possible...heehee ![]() PS: are you sure this goes in the FFVI category? Just tell them that you're sorry that they suck so bad that they can't comprehend such an awesome game.
That, or you could always just try to convince them that it is pokemon, and then correct them in front of other people to make them look even more like an arse. Or, there's always the punching in the face... ![]() (Note: the last one was a joke, and I take no responsibility, if you start beating people up, no matter how much they may deserve it for ripping on your game.) -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Back in the day (waaaaaay dating myself here), I used to get tossed the same crap about my pokemon obsession. (I played pokemon before it blew up) In the end, I decided that those *explicitive deleted*s were never gonna get it anyway, and since I liked my game, I kept playing it. On a side note, thanks to pokemon stadium for N64, my team of mewtwos will still pwn all!
Unfortunately, some people are just *explicitive deleted*s, and the best thing to do is ingore them, and let them fade into the nothing they're destined to become if they have to get off pickin' on the gamer kid. let me act out my typical bus ride.
Nintendo DS: do de do de dooo de dododo (battle music) Person1: TURN OFF THAT @!$%!# MUSIC! Me: But FFVI has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.... Person1: I don't care, turn off the music before I hurt you. Me: Fine *turns off the sound* Person2: What are you doing? Me: I'm leveling up before I go to Kefka's tower. I already have Terra at lev- Person2: Yea, I don't care. Person1: Jeez, Robert is such a nerd. Me: did you ever even play FFVI? Person3: Oh yea! It was stupid, everyone just stood around and I chose attacks from a list. No skill or anything. Just selecting attack over and over again. Me: What about the Esper system and spells and relics? Person3: All I know is that the guy with a gun sword is a freak. Me: THATS FFVIII! NOT FFVI!! Person1: Either way FF blows. Person2: Yea, I just got done playing Mortal Kombat. It was cool. Me:........... Person2: Have you ever played that Robert? Me: Yes, and I didn't like it. Continuous button mashing with no thought involved. Person2: Pfft. At least I don't just hold down the X button to win everything. Me:.........Good luck defeating Kefka like that >_> Person2: Kefka?! Who's that? Me:............. Just rest assured that you have better taste in games than everyone else!
Final Fantasy is the best RPG series out there, besides you can't really compare FF with MK and Pokemon as they are from totally different genres...it's like comparing apples to oranges...both are fruit, but the similarities end there. This is precisely why I never play my GB in public. As soon as someone sees you playing a game, they immediately think it's Pokemon and think that you're a nerd. Sure, I don't care if I'm a nerd, but it's the constant picking that really aggrivates. My advice, smile at them and do something really nasty behind their back.

Oddly enough, most of the people at my school...well, most of the guys anyway, if they hadn't played Final Fantasy they'd at least heard of it, and most of them liked Final Fantasy. Sure it was usually a PSX Final Fantasy but still. I like PSX Final Fantasies. Even if all they did was put in cheats to skip all the random battles and look at the pretty FMV sequences...yeah. I hate people. Especially when they say "yeah, I had this code to skip all the random battles...then I made it to this boss and I just COULDN'T DEFEAT IT!" and you have to reply, "Well...what did you expect to happen?"
So, anyway, when I was playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (I'm out of high school now so that was the last one I was playing on the bus), it wasn't some big deal. None of them had ever heard of Sword of Mana, though. I mean, any of the Mana games but that was the one I was playing. As for Pokemon, I don't like it myself as it seems a bit oversimplified and at this point it is repetitive, but it's okay. As for everyone who's playing an GBA getting asked if they're playing Pokemon, that's a common occurence as it IS the major selling product of most GBAs. This even without the person doing the asking being a jerk. |

Actually, the same thing happened to me yesterday when someone asked what I was playing and I told them it was FFVI, the sixth installment in the best RPG ever. He watched me played it for a while as I was battling away and trying to break the curse on the Cursed Shield. After I was done, he commented that he didn't understand a thing and that it looked like crap. This shows that people like him have simple minds and can't comprehend the complexity of such a game. So my advice is to either ignore them with all your will power or use your knowledge for FF and convert them to the greatest RPG ever.

Nobody used to like them except for me a small group until FFX came out. Then it seemed to catch on. People saw how incredible the graphics were (wasnt it in 2001?). A few people who I knew hardly played games except for Metal Gear Solid and GTA3 suddenly were intrigued. One day in a class I heard two kids who were wearing there letterman coats (I hate labelling people as jocks, but stereotypically, they would probably hold the least interest in something like FF, forgive me for anyone I may have offended) talking about it, and how fighting Seymour in one part was so hard and they couldnt figure out how to beat him. I turned around and told them about stealing potions, and they looked at me shocked, asking how I knew that. When I said I beat the game they looked impressed, which is one of the few times in high school I felt like I wasnt a "nerd" for being a gamer.
Some people just wont give it a chance if you cant shoot someone with a Desert Eagle in it. However, its their loss, as I still enjoy the games. I just dont let dumb crap like that bother me anymore. Dont be ashamed, just ignore people. -------------------- I reject your reality and substitute my own... |

Dude, I get the same thing on my bus, my two friends make cracks at the fact that I still play Gameboy, which I find nothing wrong with, but it gets pretty serious sometimes... But one of them is just a total douche, because the only system he'd ever think of playing is the Playstation 2, so...
But I never understood why people automatically associate the Pokemon series with the Gameboy... -------------------- We, who cannot see into tomorrow, have no way of knowing... But... But... Quote (RoughknightVII @ 10th April 2007 19:30) But I never understood why people automatically associate the Pokemon series with the Gameboy... Probably because Pokemon is one of the most outrageously popular video game franchises of all time, and most of its iterations are on Nintendo handheld systems. I mean, come on, who among here that's younger than 23 DIDN'T play pokemon back in grade school sometime? Hell, I'm even considering picking up Diamond or Pearl to see if it got better on the DS. But yeah, back on topic. Who cares? If someone bugs you about it then give a dismissive retort. Playing a video game in your free time isn't anything to be embarrassed about; it's a hobby. People have hobbies. People also have different tastes and preferences that cause people to have different hobbies. I don't see the issue here. -------------------- |

when i was playing FF IV like it was chock fulla hotcakes someone came up to me and said, "Psh, that game is easy, i beat like 9 days ago. No challenge at all." of course the game had only been out for about 19 hours, soooooo i went into the Zeromus battle and said i was having trouble. of course, he said "Watch and learn." now the teacher put it on the projector (the camera put something under it and it shows ones) and we watched his laughable excuse of an FF IV battle. He used Reflect then flare on Zeromus....teehee. so he didnt understand the battle system and how to not select your own people (he thought he was zeromus apparantly) so he ended up killing himself. one soft reset later and i was good......but it was still hilarious.... teehee.

I never understood the whole "it's lame to play video games" thing. I mean, when I was in elementary school, EVERYONE and their mothers was bringing in game boy colors to show off their Pokemon Blue or Red. I was more into Mega man myself, but you get the point.
I'm 20 now and I still haven't stopped playing and neither has any of the people I've grown up with. In some cases, I'm still replaying many of the same games I enjoyed back then without having my work, school or social life suffer. If people can't appreciate video games, RPGs especially, as a hobby, that's entirely their loss. Just enjoy your games and make the best of it and never mind what someone else says about it. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

It's just that gaming, past a certain age, becomes lame. At that age, you should be out meeting people and socializing, as well as doing "real" things. Obsessing with games means sacrificing socializing time (and no, playing Squal_249 in some online FPS doesn't count.)
We consider the FF series to be great, but that's subjective. The truth is, to someone who doesn't play games as much as we have in our younger days/still do in our day to day lives, an RPG would suck. It's slow and there's very little action in them. Seriously, compared to having my ass handed to me by Rugal in KoF2k2 (2k3?), trying to figure out what to do when two of my characters are dead, the other poisoned, and the last equipped with the atma weapon, the illumina, a genji glove, and an offering, is a joke. The bottom line, and these are just my thoughts, is that whatever floats your boat is absolutely fine. But don't expect everyone to join in and feel the same way you do about that. Not everyone knows FF and there's nothing wrong with that (in fact, I'd seriously question the very fabric of our society if everyone knew what FF was; moreso if they all enjoyed it.) Not everyone who knows FF thinks the concept and mechanics are a good idea, and there's nothing wrong with that either. 'Course, I think we can all be in agreement that nobody likes FF8. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I don't blame people when they think FF is lame or they've never heard of it.
But when someone says that video games in general are pointless crap, I flip. If you can't find any value in any video game you've ever played, then you either are closed-minded, or you're an idiot. If you've never played a video game since pac-man and you insult them, you're even stupider. Just appreciate that I like to play video games in the same way that you like to watch sports or play sports or cook or teach or whatever, and stop calling them nothing more than useless distractions that turn you into a hermit, because they aren't that. They can be social, fun, and thought-provoking So yeah. Get off my case. -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. I, for one, was never one that did this although i did try to play yugioh at school once in fifth grade, but it didnt work out well. Anyway, my thought on this matter is if you dont wanna be made fun of, than keep it at home. If you dont care, than do whatever. All im saying is it seems kinda wierd to see people play at school.

The problem here is that ALL of you who replied saying "So-and-so at my school doesn't appreciate FFVI because they don't understand the battle system/don't know how to think/don't appreciate the soundtrack" didn't take the time to actually explain the game.
The most in-depth explanation I've seen in this thread was someone saying "it's the sixth installment of the best video game series ever". Even then, that's your own opinion, and not many people are going to mirror it. Most of you may not realize it, but yeah -- the graphics ARE shit. And the soundtrack is also going to sound like shit to someone who's never played the game. Maybe instead of looking down upon someone for not "understanding the game", perhaps you could take the 30 seconds out of your day to explain it? Maybe TELL them that it originally came out 13 years ago, and you're playing it for the storyline and for the nostalgia? Maybe try not to be so condescending? No wonder you're getting called nerds. |

The point is that nobody really cares.
If someone finds the "opening" to take a potshot at someone, such as diss on a video game, they do it. They could care less wether or not the game is cool. Hell, I own FFVI and I still make fun of stuff about it that I haven't gotten to yet. Why? Cause I can, plain and simple. Anybody who goes out of their way to insult a game is not interested in it, UNLESS they follow it up lightheartedly and inquire into the workings of the game. But with something like the FF series, if you don't know about it already and you decide to make fun of someone abou it, you just don't care. I've tried to explain games to people, and those people just find ways to twist your words even more to their own devices. Knowledge is power, even when people who shouldn't have it do. Case and point: I was referencing a penny arcade comic with a friend at work, the Super Mario Bros. XII comic in which they bashed on the gambit system of FFXII. The conversation ends with one of them saying, "So it plays itself?" and the other saying, "Yes. The game is masturbating." Another coworker waked by as I said the final line, and the story that passed around in the immediate area finally progressed until it became the idea that I was masturbating to a final fantasy game, the entire time I was trying to explain what was really meant. It was all done in good humor, but they didn't care, they had their fun to poke at me, and no amount of convincing would stop that. Quote Final Fantasy is the best RPG series out there, besides you can't really compare FF with MK and Pokemon as they are from totally different genres...it's like comparing apples to oranges...both are fruit, but the similarities end there. Pokemon is a revolutionary new way of doing an RPG. Unlike set characters with set abilities, you could design a team based of elemental strengths and weaknesses, using multiples of the same, or entirely different combinations and customize the attacks used as well. FF to Pokemon is like comparing an Apple to a Super Apple. -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! IMO, just tell these people, "Oh, it's a game" and leave it at that. I once tried to bribe my brother with $150 to play the game for one hour. He stubbornly refused and then said "I hate RPGs." to which I replied, "You've never played an RPG before," He just said "Yeah, and that's why I hate them." ???????????
I knew he wouldn't want to play it anyways. He sticks to his FPSs, and many other games involving mindless killing. (Technically, the same goes with FFVI, except the killing is not on your behalf). Oh well. It just goes to show you that not everybody has good tastes. =/ |
