Just English, though in the future I hope to learn Spanish, German, and Yiddish. I'm also fluent in Pig Latin, though I dunno if that counts..so I'll put one.

I'm 100% fluent in english and french. But I know german and japanese fairly well - enough to get by if someone decided to parachute me into germany or japan (for whatever reason it may be...)
I pick up languages fairly easily. Japanese, I have an old book. I started studying it for fun, and quickly picked up on the grammar. My vocabulary is a bit lacking, but I can make myself understood. German, well, believe it or not I learned it mainly from listening to german metal bands. My grammar is probably terrible (never having so much as touched a book,) but aside from that I know it fairly well. I also know a BIT of hungarian. But hardly enough to consider knowing it "well." I can say stuff like, "I am a potato-cat!" (mochka-krumpli vagyòk! (muh-chka kroom-plee vad-yoh-k) - the accents are most definately wrong; hungarian is far worse than french when it comes to those) but that's about it. My mother is hungarian (yep, I'm a hybrid canadian! ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by Silverlance on 21st April 2007 03:58 -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I am trilingual, maybe if you count the third one, but it is a language. My best language and my first is English. I remember I kinda read dictionarys now and then, but mostly when I was a little youger, but not much. My second language is Spanish. I have been able to speak Spanish for a couple years now. I use to know the basics, and have other teachers teach me, and they were good teachers. I don't know, but it's just something about hanging out with others that know the language they makes you know it better than any book could do.
![]() I have many spanish-speaking friends, so even without them trying to teach me it really helps me out. My final language, which should count, is sign language. I also had a teacher there, and I know the majority of it. Of course, there are still a bit I don't know, but that's why I'm hoping to get some deaf friends that know sign lanugage in the future so I can use it more. ![]() My favorite though out of all of these is sign language though. ![]() Edit spelling error This post has been edited by FF Master on 21st April 2007 04:22 -------------------- Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Chrsit for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost Acts 4:12 Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost |

At the moment, I'm Trilingual.
My mother tongue is English. Growing up and to this day, I've spent a lot of time with the Italian side of my family, particularly with my grandparents. As they can't speak English very well, they've always spoken in Italian to me and I picked up on the language from them as I grew, until I took formal classes in Elementary school. I'm fairly fluent, I can't understand the Sicilian dialect for the life of me. Living in Quebec, you're taught French from the start. It's kind of a must if you want to live here, considering how extreme the Quebecois take it and all. My French isn't perfect, and it's not exactly proper but then again, neither is the Quebec version of French either, so I guess that explains it. I avoid speaking French unless I absolutely have to, which is unfortunately quite often here, still, I can hold my own in most conversations. I've always thought about learning Spanish, as it's very similar in to Italian and I already can understand a good amount of it when it's not spoken in that rapid-fire Spanish. I think eventually, I'll get around to it. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I can speak fluently in Polish, English and Spanish. I live all my life in Poland, so Polish is my mother language. I've never been to any English or Spanish speaking country, but I learned them both in school to an excent allowing me to pass language entrance exams to an applied linguistics faculty in a university.
As for my Spanish, there are many different versions of the language, since It's spoken in many countries. My Spanish is sufficient to get along everywhere, but I know Spanish of Spain and Spanish of Argentina the best. I'm now completing a Latin course in the university, but I can't say I speak Latin. Also, I think I'll start learning Japanese or French soon. -------------------- You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one... |

I speak English pretty much perfectly. I've spoken it since I was one; well, maybe not exactly SPOKEN, but you know what I mean.
![]() I also speak German moderatly fluent. I haven't spoken it properly at home since my brother was born, and only because of regular holidays back to Germany, and German classes this year at school. Basically, I could probably order a steak at a resturant, and swear at my non-German speaking teachers. -------------------- |

I speak English fluently, French very well (five years in high school and college with a 5 on the AP French exam) and Spanish decently (two semesters in class, plus my best friend is fluent and teaches me stuff). I know a fair amount of Japanese from things like anime and Japanese-obsessed friends, and I know a little Hungarian because of my grandparents speaking it more than English; most of my Hungarian is things like good morning and good evening and names of food; I don't even know how to spell any of it.

Wasn't there a similiar topic a while back?
Anyway, as a first language I speak Polish, and I speak both English and German at an "academic" level. I voted "three", since my skill in Italian, French and Spanish is very low (Italian being the strongest of these). As an otaku (how derogative this sounds in an english sentence) I know a few odd words in Japanese and I'd love to learn to speak Japanese proficiently someday. Also, obligatory cheesy joke from "The Tales of the Mos Eisley Cantina": Q: What do you call a creature that speaks two languages? A: Bilingual. I said one, English of course, but at the moment I'm learning Spanish in school. I've also done a lot of sign language for these sign language concerts that we used to do in my town, so at one point I probably knew 75 signs or so. I've also diddled around with Japanese a little (I can say, "I don't understand Japanese"), but I haven't had the time to pursue it further.

Once upon a time, I would've said that I speak English, French and German well, but my knowledge of French and German has rusted so much that I can barely read a passage of either any more. It's rather disappointing, but if you don't ever practice, I suppose that's what happens.
I try to make up for it by being a snob about English grammar and spelling (while undoubtedly making myself look stupid by making errors of my own). That said, I can't see much wrong with the poll title or think of a better way to phrase it. ![]() |

I put two, English and French. English is my first choice, and though i'm not completely fluent, i'm not too bad when it comes to having an educated discussion. Though i tend to be too literal when translatin from English to French.
In the not too distant future, I'd love to study Chinese and/or Japanese, because the style is so different to English. As for sign language, my sister taught me the alphabet and some words. Sure, I could never hold a conversation, but it's cool to be able to speak without words. |

I took three years of Japanese in high school and one in college. I got to be, while not exactly fluent, at least conversational. Then I found out I didn't need a language for my major, and it wasn't counting towards graduation. I can barely put together a sentence anymore.

Long, long ago I was an excellent reader of Spanish and a decent speaker. I stopped taking it after my junior year of high school, though, and that is over a decade ago now. I can use only phrases involving simple conjugation now.

Conjugating Spanish was never difficult for me to grasp so that came easily. During my second year of Spanish i attained the ability to speaking it fluently by watching telemundo, (learning to listen at speed, looking up new words i heard), Which greatly impressed my Spanish teacher who was a Mexican immigrant, i was also able to emulate a Spanish accent. Well much like tiddles after that year I dropped Spanish and so now I'm back to being fluent in one language, but I can still hear Spanish words spoken at fluent speeds, however my comprehension isn't what it used to be. I was never a snob about English, you really can't be, even in England there are many dialects, as well as Irish and Scottish, but of course being open and understanding of all is what's made my dialect so unique. Being in the 9th grade, it is mandatory in my school to take a second language until 10th grade, and then I plan on quiting it. I currently am taking my fourth year in Spanish, which I really, really suck at. I want to learn German... But other than that, English is my language.

Of course, but there's nothing wrong with asking people to make their best effort to be clear when writing for public consumption, regardless of language. The point of spelling and grammar as a whole seems to have been lost on the Internet at large, and I find that lamentable. Writing in clear English doesn't really mean abandoning dialect. In fact, doing so makes it easier for people who are less fluent in your language to understand you, as they will be able to look up words and sentence structures, which is often impossible with poorly written language.
