I took two years of Spanish in high school but I don't consider myself competant -- I can read various labels and things but I don't think I could carry on a conversation.

I'm taking German in college right now, so hopefully I'll get decent at that smile.gif.

So I voted monolingual.

I only speak English!

The idea of learning other languages has always been appealing, but I quickly realise I would stand to gain very little by doing so. It seems unlikely that I will consider the idea any time soon, if ever. But if I do try anything, it will most likely be sign language.

I can only speak English well. I know a lot of Latin, but I have zero speaking experience with it, since it is never spoken and never will be. I can read and write in Latin quite well, but again, I doubt I'd be able to sustain too much of a conversation in Latin.

I learned a good deal of Greek awhile ago but I have since forgotten all but the alphabet. happy.gif I started learning Japanese just recently, but I know not nearly enough to talk in it yet. Maybe in a year or two I could change my response to this, but as of right now, it's just 1.

My first language is English, though around here listening to someone speak it would make you wonder if that's what it really is. That's what happens when you live in the sticks.

I'm not officially bilingual, but I've been in French Immersion for almost 4 years and I can have full conversations with my teachers. I hate the "if you speak English then you lose a point on your term mark" rule. It really scares you into learning the language. Lots of people end up dropping out in the first few months but it's really worth it.

The only thing I really use French for is to talk it around people who only know English. It drives them crazy and puts me into hysterics! But in all seriousness, if you want a job in Canada, you get picked a lot faster if you can speak French.

I only speak fluent English. I know quite a bit of Spanish, but not enough to carry on a non-retarded conversation and a little Polish. Does Ebonics count as a language? If so, I can speak that rather fluently also.

I said two, and it's not the usual for the area I live in.

There has been a large flux of mexicans in the area where I live (nebraska), so spanish has picked up speed, but I don't know spanish, and don't care to learn.

I took chinese in high school.

I really liked it, but we didn't really get to a "literary" level, so reading is very difficult, but my handy chinese-english dictionary is awesome!

What I'm suprised about is how much of the spoken language still comes to me. I don't ever use it, but at times I'll just be thinking about things I say, and then realize: this is how you say it in chinese!

That happens a lot.
