Yeah, we've all seen these. Those huge setups where stuff rolls around, knocks stuff over that makes other things roll around, turn on fans that knock down pegs tied to strings that pull pieces of wood out from in front of a pool ball that rolls down a ramp, etc, etc. They're cool, and they're unbelievable wastes of time.
This one, however, is a cool and unbelievable waste of FIERY time. You can view it here. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Wasn't convinced until I saw the flaming tetherball. That was great.

Absolutely amazing.
I was actually watching the Pitagora Suicchi videos a few weeks ago and ended up watching a bunch more Rube Goldberg machines than just those, but those relied on more traditional means of passing the "signal"--momentum, impact, and force on rolling objects like balls. Not only does this video emphasize the relatively rare concept of contact signal passing in the Rube Goldberg scene, it also gives new meaning to the phrase "passing the torch". -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. That was great. Would have been nice if it did some little useless thing at the end, like make toast, but still great.

Oh, you've seen that youtube video, where it pushes the toast over...but leaves the butter far, far away? That one's quite awesome. Although as I read your post I thought you were actually thinking of the Pitagora Suicchi sign, lol. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Wow. On a related note, I need to make a Goldberg device for science with some other people. I wonder is our teacher will let us use fire...
EDIT: On second thought, we watched this very one earlier today on a different site. IIRC, the ending is the fire being extinguished in a bucket, right? Now I like the Japanese one I saw on youtube. Sure it had no fire, but it was bigger, and it cooked your Ramen This post has been edited by Barrylocke on 10th May 2007 22:53 -------------------- |

Hmm, no, I didn't see that. Toast was an example, because Goldberg inventions tended to do little tasks, like brushing teeth or boiling water or holding ties, in a really complicated, overdrawn fashion. I was thinking like the professor's machine in Back to the Future, that makes toast, doesn't it?

Here's a few others, for those interested in these.
Nintendo style! A short italian version of Pytagora Switch. Here's the original (?) Pytagora Switch. Multiple videos in one. And last but not least... I have no idea what this has to do with Pytagora Switch, other than being a song about Goldberg machines, but whatever. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Here's another one. It's has a series of short devices. With a catchy (or annoying) little Japanese jingle. I think they might have been commercials.

No, they are segments of a Japanese children's TV show. I would guess from the jingle that it's called "Pythagoras Switch" ("Pitagora Suicchi").

There was a commercial using these though. Toyota, I think, had a bunch of tires and car parts moving about in a Goldberg fashion. It was fake (as it featured impossible stuff, the kind that's like a wiper closing a car door loud enough to make it slam or something of that sort) but it was fairly cool.
Unfortunately the only traces of it I could find led to a dead site without any working links... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |
