In all of Final Fantasy, what do you consider to be the hardest items to obtain? Why are they so hard for you to get? Mine are:

Saturn Sigil - FFX - To make a long story short, I'm colorblind; the butterflies all look greyish purple to me. It doesn't help either that Kimahri is useless and I really don't want to beat myself up for a character I never use.

Iron Duke - FFX2 - Trema is rather difficult to defeat and even get to, and you have no chance to heal after the Paragon fight.

Excalibur 2 - FF9 - Never gotten it, but I have tried, albeit halfheartedly. I got stuck because you need to eat a Mandragora which is a little difficult at level 3. Maybe someday I'll do it.

Cards Available in Queen of Cards Sidequest - FF8 - I hate the QoC sidequest. By the time you're looking to score these cards, the "Random" rule is everywhere, and even if it's not, you'll probably spread it by doing this sidequest. You play and lose with one of the cards she says she wants, and she doesn't take it, which of course is immaterial if you can't find where she's hiding, because she'll only talk about her father in Dollet. Then, of course, once she has the card she wants, you'll want to:

(1) win it back from her brother,
(2) go find the "new" card her father created,
(3) consult page 190 of the FF8 strategy guide to find out where she is when she says where she's going, which if she is in Deling City, there is a 12.5% chance she went to Balamb, a 12.5% chance she went to Dollet, a 12.5% chance she went to Winhill, and a 62.5% chance she went to FH.

What items confound your quests the most?

One of mine would have to be Cloud's Ultima weapon. Now sure fighting Ultima Weapon himself is easy, it's tracking him and him getting to the town, it can seriously take 5-10 minutes each.

The other one is getting Squall's Lionheart, the materials you need drop quite rarely, and most of the enimies appear rarely as well.

This is all I can think of at the moment.

I have to say Excalibur II from Final Fantasy IX, that has been the hardest to me, and to this day I've never acquired it.

From Final Fantasy VII, Knights of the Round. The process that one must go through is hard and long.

Once deep in the game, the rare cards from Final Fantasy VIII were a pain in the azo, specially the one that Edea has when you talk to her near the end of the game in her house. There's another card that you have to loose against Rinoa's dad to make another card appear in the town in the middle of the ocean, I forgot the name (from here you get to Esthar). Anyway, you claim a new card and you can win your previously lost card.

Crusader, defeating each and everyone of the dragons with out using the Vanish/Doom trick is hard.

Pumice from Ozma, do I have to say anything else.

Wyrmhero Blade, too long, too expensive, I WANT IT <-- FF 12

I still don't see what's so hard about getting the Excalibur II. If you skip cutscenes, run away a lot, and get lucky on certain equipment steals at certain points of the game, then you can do it with over an hour to spare. There are guides written on the subject - just follow the guides and be careful.

Ozma also is simply not difficult. With so many characters that can deal 9999 with every turn, and an abundance of ways to protect against nearly every element and every status effect, if you prepare yourself then Ozma isn't a problem at all. I thought some of the storyline bosses were trickier.

I still haven't gotten the Jupiter Sigil in FF X, if only because I've never had much patience for Blitzball. I also had a little trouble with the Venus, Saturn, and Sun Sigils but after some patience I managed to get all of those.

There's always the classic answer: FF IV's Adamant Armor. That's a pain. FF III NES's Onion equipment also deserve mention.

Most of the move-find items in FF Tactics' Deep Dungeon also qualify for this thread. There is no way I would have gotten all of them without using a guide, and the fact that you need to drag along a low-Brave item finder is another annoyance.

Just because it's possible doesn't make it easy. Rushing through is good for time's sake, but a player's got to have a plan on what to sell/skip beforehand. Even with a guide, there's quite a lot of resetting involved and strategies based on luck. Have you ever tried it?

Anyway, Excalibur II gets my vote, with the Iron Duke coming as the runner-up. Probably less difficult with auto-protect/-shell on the Mascot dresspheres, but I never finished my third playthrough. Trema's quite a handful either way, though -- walloped me after I Catnip'd the monster before it (Paragon?). =/

The items that can only be obtained with a Gold Chocobo in FFVII, Excalibur II and some of the items that can only be found in the Chocographs (just a reason for me to take the friendly yellow birds seriously in a FF game) get my vote for hardest items to obtain. Some of the final weapons in FFVIII were difficult to get, but with perseverance and an unmatched love for the game helped a lot. Queen of Cards is another hard one.

The Sun Sigil took me a week to acquire. That was a bad week.

Honorable mention goes out to the gold chocobo from FFVII. First time I ever tried I got all the chocobos I needed on my first try. Every game after that I have had an increasingly frustrating time obtaining the needed green, blue, and black chocobos.

I have never attempted to acquire the Excalibur II from FFIX. I don't think I ever will. Same for adamant armor in FFIV. I lack patience for both.

The stupid Move-Find items in Final Fantasy Tactics were just aggravating.

And Wakka's sigil, just because I can't stand Blitzball.

THE hardest item in any FF is without a doubt the

99 x warp sphere chests in omega ruins in FFX

this is evil; you have to open all 15 chests (I think it's 15)
in the correct order which is random--hit the wrong chest and a fight appears
and you have to reset

I don't think anyone has ever done it because it's that unfair thumbdown.gif

Yes, I tried it, I used a guide, I went for only specific steals, I abused Limit Globe, I skipped cutscenes, and all of that jazz to do it back when I was in high school. I wasn't able to get a very complete file for it, because I had forgone so much treasure hunting and couldn't synth enough items to get a good final setup, but I did it. And I still contend that there are several harder tasks in FF games.

FF4: Pink Tail of course. Especially in the US SNES version with no Alerts. A 1/64 chance of the encounter, a 15/256 chance (per Pinkpuff) of dropping an item at all, and a 1/64 chance of dropped item being a Pink Tail. I've never ever gotten Adamant Armor.

FF5: I had the hardest time with the Tinker Bell. The rare steal-only items were annoying but the Reset spell was there to help. No such luck with the Tinker Bell. With my wacky luck, I got it without trying on my first playthrough, where I'd missed a bunch of stuff already. When I shoot for 100%, it takes over ten tries.

FF7: Sneak Attack. Takes hours of real time to nab this. Raising a chocobo that can consistently win at S class is the easy part. There are about 15 possible prizes for the slot that Sneak Attack appears in, and when it finally does show up, there's only a 20% chance of winning it. Enemy Away is just slightly below Sneak Attack in the luckfest needed.

FF8: Plenty of choices in elusive items. Here's some besides theChocobo World exclusives:
Silver Mail: Snow Lions are not that easy to encounter and it's a rare drop.
Med Kit: Accumulating 104 Dragon Fangs takes a while and unlike many other items which are obtainable through some combination of the Card Club on disc 4, refining, or luck with Angelo Search, there are no shortcuts. (People who have played this game enough will know where the first 4 Dragon Fangs go.)
Power Generator: It's only available as a rarest Mug from a Blitz. Thankfully, one can be obtained via a easier method but trying to get a second one for my item list actually caused me to stop playing the game for months.
Knight's Code: Easy to obtain with the Card Club. Refining one the long way takes 5 million Curse Spikes, no exaggeration.

FF9: Minigame mayhem. I lack the coordination to obtain King of Jump Rope and Athlete Queen. I've never gotten Excalibur 2 either, but that's because I have no desire to try. I think I'm physically capable of it but skipping past the game like that isn't my style.

FFT - Javelin (2) was tricky and the final summon just wasn't fair.
FF6 - the cursed sheild isn't that hard, but it's time consuming.
FF7 - knights of the round materia was a pain in the ass.
and FF9 - Winning the rare cards from cid sucked.

I had forgotten about Javelin 2 and Escutcheon 2 - I totally agree. Getting one or the other is difficult enough, but getting them both at once is no fun. And then, occasionally, after the fight you find that what you really got were basic Javelins and Escutcheons. I found this even more difficult than getting all of Elmdor's equipment, or scoring the DD loot, but that may or may not be because I went online and found where they hid all of it. thumbup.gif

The excalibur 2 sounds difficult, I wouldn't try it, too much effort involved for me.
I thought the mascot dresspheres where a pain to obtain as well, it took me weeks to get them.

GlassMask, Dragon Whip, Artemis Bow are all unbelievably difficult to get in IV. Pinktail is worse.

In V, I'd say Dragon Whip. It's either a rare drop from Stingray, a monster that's really hard to run into, or a rare steal from Shinryuu, a monster you really don't have moves to spare against.

In IX, and the all-time winner, is the King of Ropes.

Hrm.

FF1: I dunno. Maybe the stuff in the GBA version you get beating Omega and Shinryuu. I don't think there were any real hidden items in this one.

FF4: Pink tail. Hardly any contest there.

FF6: Either the illumina (I always get Ragnarok as an esper to fill up my esper list) or a second atma weapon (you only get one chance.)

FF8: Working up the gut to play this game long enough to get any item was a trial in itself. Having to earn/steal so many items in battle to make the one you want sucked.

FF9: Excalibur II. It's rather pointless though, seeing as you could just take your time and build up stats that make the extra attack power kinda meaningless... smile.gif

FFX: Just about all sigils (or crests? I think it was crests...) Doging 200 bolts is tedious and annoying. Getting 0:00:00 in the chocobo race isn't too hard, thankfully - 30 minutes and it was mine. The butterflies in Macalania? Bah! I'd rather make him a custom weapon. And don't get me started about blitzball... The chests in Omega dungeon were pretty annoying too.

FFXI: ...BWAHAHA! XD

FFXII: The zodiac spear. Not because it's hard to get, but because it's one of those stupid items you permanently miss unless you buy the strategy guide. Well, not permanently - you still have a meager 1% chance if you miss it. Then it's gone. biggrin.gif Woot woot!

It's been a long while since I've done this, but if I remember right, if you raise a chocobo from C class to S class and win every race along the way, and then continue to win at S class as if there were a class above that you were trying to obtain, doesn't it just give you are the rare items you can win? It's been awhile for me, but I think I remember playing my PS1 version on an emu on my computer, and turboing through a ton of races and then having the guy mention something to me about giving me everything.

On topic: how about instead of dignity in FFX-2, the 100% ending? How many other final fantasys have the option to even start over with abilities to get the abilities that you didn't get the first, second, or millionth time?
