So a couple nights ago Life on Mars from the BBC ended forever, doing that crazy British thing of going only two series (16 eps total, I think?). Who here watched it? I assume most of the responses will be Britons, since you can't get the DVDs here yet, nor do I think it's on BBC America.

But really, I thought it was a great show and really liked the way it ended. It was a nice tie-up while still remaining ambiguous enough to discuss what might have actually gone down. What do you guys think?

Where did Sam really belong, both at heart and in "reality?" Was he really from the present, or 1973? Does it even matter?

Here's hoping the American one doesn't get off the ground, to be honest.

Obligatory "Life on Mars is super" post.

Writer and co-creator Matthew Graham talks about his view of the ending, and forthcoming spinoff Ashes to Ashes, here:

Spoiler warning on that if you might ever watch the series - and I strongly suggest that you find some way to do so!

The first series apparently was on BBC America last year, but there's no date for the second.

Great link, Tiddles, that blogger really pointed out a lot of stuff I loved about the finale, from Phyllis' "sex goddess" line to the cleverly selected soundtrack.

Life on Mars is possibly the best new thing that the BBC has done for a long time. My family are huge fans, and we've seen every episode from the beginning. We're still confused about the ending.

A friend of my dad's who likes the show came up with a good ending for the series before the final episode aired.

He said that Sam Tyler would wake up in hospital, with the TV being left on to try and wake him from his coma. It would be showing a 70s cop show with Gene Hunt and co. in it. Hunt himself would say something like "You did well, Sam".

So all that time, his dreams were being influenced by the show, but he could still hear the voices of the doctors because they were trying to wake him up as well.

Rangers51 - you live in America, right? So how did you see the second series even though there aren't any DVDs? I'm guessing some kind of satellite TV that picks up British channels.

Life on mars is the best cop show i've ever watched, i missed all the episodes except the last two of series one, but i nearly watched all the episodes of series two.
I was a bit puzzled of the ending,

Sam went back 73 without saying bye to his parents, haven't they been enough
and now i know why he went back, he felt alive in 73.

Quite a good ending i say, can't wait for the 80's show.

He did kind of say goodbye to his mom, though, and his dad wasn't at all in the picture in the present. You might have missed that, having missed the S1 episodes.

Ashes to Ashes should be pretty awesome, yes. In theory.

Hmm... I just hope they don't make a pig's ear of it. LoM is almost sacred, and if it's just a by-the-numbers spin-off, I won't be pleased.
