Because everyone has a favorite.

There are, of course a lot to choose from, the ones that jump to my mind are:
Whole Lot of Love- Zeppelin
Spanish Caravan- The Doors
Lucifer Sam- Pink Floyd
Brain Damage- Pink Floyd

There's about a million of em (Shit, from Zeppelin alone?). It's a tough choice, but if I had to bring it down to ONE, I'd have to go with:

Wish You Were Here- Pink Floyd (album of the same name)

When that first notes enter your ears, you totally know what you're listening to right off the bat. It's a nice slow intro, that builds in to a fantastic song.

I can't imagine how hard it'll be for some of you music buffs to bring it to one, because I'm not even that huge in to music, and *I* had a hard time.

Van Halen - You Really Got Me.

Regardless of the rest of the song (I'm not too partial with their rendition), the intro is tops in my book for pure guitar wankery.

It's nigh impossible for me to pick just one. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird, most everything from Pink Floyd, Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath's Iron Man, Ted Nugent's Stranglehold, and David Bowie's No Control I'd list as top 5-10.

I'd have to go with HSM - Van Halen makes awesome guitar-based stuff. Humans Being is another really awesome one (and that rising series of notes halfway through the song? Wow, that one always sends shivers down my spine!!)

Couple of other great ones would be Danzig's "Mother" (though it has such a terribly simple structure as a whole, it's still a good song), Maiden's "Brave New World," "Face in the Sand," and "Ghost of the Navigator" (how can Runey post about music without talking about Maiden? It's just not morally right.) and Rammstein's "Mein Teil" (I STILL listen to that one with the volume through the roof sometimes. smile.gif )

Admittedly some of these aren't purely guitar intros (like Rammstein.) Bite me. smile.gif

Radiohead - Airbag comes straight to mind. It's such a menacing opening, to the track and the album, really grabs your attention right off the bat.

Some personal favourites include Kings of Leon - The Bucket, which just makes me grin every time I hear it, and the Bloc Party B-side 'Cain Said To Abel,' which is just a great riff.

Jethro Tull - Aqualung is another classic, for sure, too.

That's all I got right now.

Every Fall Of Troy song has a masterful display of guitar-rock intro. This is probably most apparent on "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X." and "I Just Got This Symphony Goin' ". They mix a ridiculous amount of delay and chorus effects with mind-blowing pull-offs to make these high energy riffs you can't help but get stoked about.

If you want to talk Led Zeppelin, "Since I Been Lovin' You" basically says everything you could ever want in a band within the first 30 seconds.

Of course, if you want to talk classic guitar intros, why not look at the one that's probably made the most impact in the history of rock? It's nothing more than a simple big bend on the big E string with heavy distortion on followed by perhaps the most well known power-chord progression in all of rock-dom. I mean, of course, Black Sabbath's Iron Man.

There are plenty of greats. Thunderstruck from AC/DC? The Wasted Years or The Trooper by Iron Maiden? Guns N Roses' have some pretty infamous guitar intros in their more popular songs, like Welcome To The Jungle or Sweet Child O' Mine.

I can probably go on forever, and there's no way I can just choose one, so just take the one's I've listed so far as my personal favorites.

It's a tossup between "Electioneering" by Radiohead and "I'm Gonna Leave" by Queens of the Stone Age. Rainbow's "Man on the Silver Mountain" has a killer riff, too.

PS - My fave Zep intro is in "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp". blink.gif

Yes. Yes yes yes yes. I love Sweet Child O' Mine. My guitar-slinging friend taught me how to play it the other day, too. Makes me feel so bad. Good stuff.

Also see:
Snow (Hey Oh) - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Lateralus - Tool
Mosquito Song - Queens of the Stone Age
Hey You - Pink Floyd

Edit
Ohhhmigawd, I totally forgot Wish You Were Here. Thanks for reminding me MG

All time greats for memorable guitar intros:

Crawl Away - Tool
Beast and the Harlot - Avenged Sevenfold
Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'N Roses
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty

And honestly, the most memorable of all of the songs that you can recognize from the very first 3 notes, in my opinion, would be:

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

How can you possibly forget the badassin'est intro to any song of any kind ever in the history of everything?

"Back in Black" - AC/DC

You can't tell me you don't feel like flipping the horns and banging your head when you hear that first rocking set of chords. I mean, if ears could orgasm...
