ok i've noticed that many people loved pokémon when it first came including me
i know of way for those die-hard fans out there to catch the incredibly rare mew without the use of a gameshark or action replay and after doing a recent poll at my school i've noticed that nobody knew about it so i would like to share it with everyone here who does not know about it  For this to work, there's some important things that needs to be followed. If you already finished the game, chances are, there are things you did that will cause this not to work. So most likely, if you finished the game already, this won't work. Make sure you follow these instructions carefully. This works for Red, Blue, and Yellow versions. Do NOT battle the trainer at Route 8(he's a few steps below the door to the underground path) and Route 25(a jr. trainer who has only a slowpoke and is and is standing in front of two trees facing toward the north). If you do, you won't be able to get mew. You need to play the game from the start till the point where you get HM02 Fly from Celadon City. Also, make sure you have a Pokemon that knows fly with you. You need to go to route 8(left of lavender town) and stand in front of the door of the underground path. I'd recommend saving your game here in case you accidentally mess up. When you take a step down, that trainer will see you. However, when you are taking that step down, quickly press start. If you did it right, then the menu should pop up first before the trainer can see you. If you didn't get it right, then you'll have to start over. Because you can't battle this trainer. Now go to the Pokemon menu, and using the Pokemon that knows fly, fly to Cerulean City. The trainer will see you. But don't worry, it's normal. You will fly off to Cerulean City before that trainer can even battle you. Once you arrive at Cerulean City you'll find that the buttons on your game boy don't work anymore except for the d-pad. You need to work your way up the bridge to the north and find the jr. trainer i mentioned earlier and you need to battle him but you also need to make sure that he walks to you because if step right in front of him your game will freeze. When battling him you should notice that the buttons are working again so make sure you waste his lv. 17 slowpoke. Once the battle is over, fly to Lavender town and start heading towards route 8 again and as soon as you enter route 8 your menu will pop up on its own close the menu and a random battle will occur even though you are not in any tall grass. This battle is mew. He is only level 7 and has one attack, pound. But he is able to learn any TM or HM. so have fun with your new mew! -------------------- Rudy: "You did all this to become immortal. Every summer, me, my brother and my two cousins start a new game of Pokemon together, and go through at the same pace, battling each other every so often. Last time, we had agreed not to have any legendaries in our teams. Then I found out about this glitch. I recited the rules under the wording that 'we can't have Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno or Mewtwo in our teams', as we were playing on Red, Blue and Yellow, and then proceeded to catch a Mew. Boy, were they surprised, I'll tell you!
Back on topic, it is a great glitch, that can even be manipulated to get a variety of lvl 7 Pokemon. I managed to get an Arcanine and a Chansey. Has anyone else got any other rare Pokemon using this (sorry if this is too off topic)? |

I heard this glitch last year, I've never used it, mostly because I already had a mew from a friend. I might try it when I play through agian though.

My friend has used this glitch in many playthroughs. It sure is nifty. At any rate, it's pretty much the only way to obtain Mew anymore, isn't it? Besides trading with a friend who already has one.

I've performed this trick, and the timing is actually bizzarely easy. It's also not very time consuming to pull off, as long as you remember which trainers to not fight.

you just have to battle different trainers instead of the junior trainer

Well, if it's that simple, I'll start making a guide as to which Pokemon can be caught after battling which trainer.

In most Pokemon communities, this is waaay old news.
Anyway, I've never tried this trick, and most likely never will. My Yellow cart's internal battery has died like nearly every single RBY cart in the world seems to be doing. However, if I ever find a ROM and a spare week, I'll try the glitch just to see it with my own eyes. Man, the first generation of Pokemon games were glitched up bad. As well as this, there's the Missingno. trick, the Glitch City and all sorts of stuff. As far as I can tell, most of the glitches are to do with tables and hexadecimals and all sorts of complicated computer things that I don't really understand. -------------------- |

I only ever used Missingno (gotta love having 'glitch'ty-nine Master Balls. ![]() Quote Well, if it's that simple, I'll start making a guide as to which Pokemon can be caught after battling which trainer. Its all to do with the special stat of the previous Pokemon you fought (hence why it only works in Red Blue and Yellow - this stat was split in later games) coinciding with a special number attributed randomly to each Pokemon. I can't explain it properly so I won't even try, but others can. Just do a quick Wikipedia search and you should find all you need. Basically, if you know the special number of the Pokemon you want to catch (in Mew's case, this number is the same as the special stat of the Slowpoke belonging to the Junior Trainer), you just need to find a Pokemon with a special stat that is the same as this number. Obviously, doing this is very difficult, but there is an assured method of doing it. First, it is important that you know that finding wild Pokemon is just the same - it doesn't have to be a trainer battle. Basically, you train one of your Pokemon so that its special stat is the same as the special number of the Pokemon you want. Then you initiate the trick and then go and find a wild Ditto. It doesn't matter if you do fights before the fight with the Ditto - its only the last battle you fought that counts. When you find the Ditto, let it transform into your Pokemon with the corrrect stat, and then proceed to kill it. Then, just fly back to Lavender Town and enter the route where the battle was initiated. The Pokemon you want will appear, and then all you have to do is catch the lvl 7 blighter. Somewhere on the Net is a list of all the Pokemon and their relevant number. Edit OK, found a site that lists them all. Simply find the Pokemon you want on the left, then train a Pokemon so it has the relevant special stat, under the column 'Decimal (Special Stat for Mew trick)'. Fight a Ditto that has tranformed, then initiate the battle as usual for the Mew glitch. Here's the list: http://www.trsrockin.com/hexlist.html This post has been edited by Wizwum on 15th April 2007 14:27 |

So all it takes is getting a Pokemon with their Special Stat at the right number? That makes it relatively easy, too - just nab some of the early Pokemon, use the MissingNo glitch to dupe some Calcium, then adjust the stat to where you want it.
Seems too easy... Edit: I'll still see what I can do about creating that guide, though, for those who want to start nabbing those other Pokemon before you have access to the Dittos just outside Indigo Plateau. This post has been edited by Suunok on 15th April 2007 19:05 |

I have yet to get a complete trainer and last-pokemon-special-stat/next-thing-you-can-use-that-trainer-to-catch list, but with the partial list that's currently available on GameFAQs (and a little bit of help from the people on the psypoke IRC channel, I've gotten a ton of Red-only pokemon onto my Blue file.
I think I have two mews, in fact, as well as two growlithes and at least one gengar. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Yeah i knew of this but you can also do this at cerulean (cant spell it) with an Abra and teleport back to the gym and fight a "grunt" at the gym then walk up nugget road and you will fight one.

Any trainer that sees you at the full screen range will do to start the glitch. All you have to do is walk right down their line of sight.
Also, you don't need to be uber far into the game to do it, Dittos are outside Fuschia in red/blue and in Cinnabar's mansion in yellow. Both are super rare encounters though, unlike Cerulean Cave/Indigo Area where they're much more common. -------------------- My soul is bound to the Mistress of the Afterlife, and my fealty is to her always. quick question for the glitch, wouldn't it just work quicker to trade for a pokemon with fly, then you can just get it right after getting the great ball in the trash can on the S.S. Anne.
Mews fell into my category of being damn annoying to catch if you didn't have a great ball.(along with Abra) -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

Well you'd have to be able to use Fly, so you would have to have the correct Gym Badge ( I don't remember which one it is...), but apart from that, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Personally, I had no trouble catching a Mew with a regular Pokeball, but that may have had something to do with it being at the perfect point for capture (that is, precisely a sliver of health left). |

It's not like it was a glitch specifically put into the game for kicks. It's just simple manipulation of the way the game works and runs. I just did this glitch and came here immediately. Here is what I did:
I walked in front of the dude in the grass just beside the nugget bridge and pressed start. I got my Abra to teleport back to the Pokemon center. I then went and fought the dude with the Slowpoke. I went and found Mew. I didn't have to go get Fly or warp away from the dude on Route 8. My sister did something even stranger. She got into a random battle in front of the last guy in Viridian Forest. She lost and ended up back at the center. She then went back into the forest and found a wild Ivysaur. Apparently as long as you can leave the screen somehow before you fight the person, this glitch will work. -------------------- Why, hello guys! Yeah, you can get abra that early, and you can use the west-of-nugget-bridge trainer to activate this. It's a lot faster than waiting for Fly and the now-famous gambler, and there are a ton of trainers there that you can use to get various things like gengars, growlithes, etc.. Because of him I've like abused the glitch and gotten a ton of unavailable and/or rare pokemon already.
